Author Interview and Giveaway! Ella Fox, Author of Catch My Fall (The Catch series #1)

Catch my Fall Teaser 3

Interview:

Welcome, Ella! Tell us more about your book—take us beyond the official “book blurb”.

This book came about after I repeatedly kept seeing stories on teen rape/sexual abuse.  There are more and more cases every day of teens/young adults being assaulted by people that they know- friends & people in their social circle.  One particular news story that touched my heart was about a girl who had been assaulted by a group of her peers.  Not only was she violated-  video and photos were taken of the assault and posted online.  She was ostracized at school and no one would press charges.  Sadly, she took her own life because the pressure was too much.

I was heartbroken when I saw that story, but it wasn’t the only time that I heard something along those lines.  In researching this book, I found that for this generation it is becoming more and more common to have video and photos taken and distributed after assault at the hand of someone that they know.

I don’t think we give today’s youth enough information on the things that can happen, and my hope was that if ONE person read this book and talked to their best friend about ways to keep them both safe in a party atmosphere, that would be a very good thing.

I wanted my characters to be down but not out, weakened but not so much that they couldn’t survive.  At its heart, Catch My Fall is about friendship, family and loyalty.  Because Mia has a strong unit around her, she is able to go on.

Wow–what an inspiration…

Give us more info about your main characters—who are they? What one thing would they need to have with them if stranded on a desert isle?

Mia is that sweet girl that everyone feels comfortable around because she doesn’t have a cruel bone in her body.  She’s a fighter, although she doesn’t realize how strong she is.  If she were stranded on a desert island, Mia would want a hairbrush.

Tristan is a stand-up guy.  He’s protective, caring, considerate and very layered.  He would go to the ends of the earth for his friends.  If he were on a desert island, Tristan would need his journal with him.

🙂

What scene in your book was the most fun to write, and why?

There’s a scene where Tristan is sharing his “movie treats” with Mia.  It’s a fun moment between the two of them that shows how sweet they both are.

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing for years and years, but I published for the first time in July of 2012.  For me, I’m generally inspired by things around me.  Every one of my books has at least one element that relates to my life in some way-  friends, family, and past experiences sneak their way into the stories somehow.

What do you like best about being a writer?

I like being able to chase a story down.  I start with an idea and then I have to hold on and see where it takes me.  I always know the outline, but I can be writing something and find that the characters WILL NOT conform to what the original outline was.

What is the most challenging part of being a writer?

Time management.  It’s really hard sometimes not to get lost brainstorming about the characters.  Some brainstorm days end with absolutely nothing having been written.

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I’m working on “Saving Hart”, book seven of The Hart Family series.  As for the next year, tons of stuff coming!  Books 2, 3 & 4 in the Renegade Saints series.  Books 7 & 8 in the Hart series.  And book 2 in the Catch series. Phew! Lots of typing going on over here.

Great!

What authors and/or books have inspired you?

I’m a huge fan of Stephen King.  I’ve always been able to go within and create a story inside my head because I loved reading what he wrote so much.  I’m also a fan of Sue Grafton, Joe Hill and Nora Roberts.  In the past year I’ve become a fan of Laura Kaye, Colleen Hoover and Nyrae Dawn.

All excellent authors!

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?

I’m currently reading “Try” by Ella Frank and I am loving it!  I’ve never read a M/M book before, but this is a really engrossing story.  I’m pulling for Logan & Tate.

Please share a favorite scene from your book with our readers.

This is a scene from CATCH MY FALL.

Cocking his head to the side, Tristan stared at me for a few seconds before crossing the room to stand in front of me.  “What’s happening here, Mia?  You’re upset about something.  What did I do?”

I laughed uneasily in an attempt to dissuade him from thinking that.  “No, no, nothing like that.  I just feel bad that I forgot I have something to do with Darby.  I hate forgetting things, but other than that, everything is fine.”

God, why did I agree to try with him?  I basically gave him a blank check to do as much damage to me as he wanted to.  Stupid, stupid, stupid!  Had history taught me nothing?

He took my hands in his as he shook his head.  “No, that’s not it.  You’re running.  Why?”

I pulled away from his hands and shook my head at him as I turned to find my purse.  “I’m not running, exactly, I just need time to think. This…us…whatever it is…might not be such a great idea.”

He looked crestfallen, but I couldn’t help but wonder if that was because he’s so used to girls falling at his feet.  Am I just the first girl that hasn’t fallen in line?

“I must have done something to upset you.  Just tell me what it is and I’ll fix it…I’ll change it.”

Looking at him, I shook my head.  “The problem might be that I would even need you to change at all.  We have two different ways of living life, Tristan.  You live free and wild, leaving a trail of dropped panties behind you and I’m a virgin with emotional problems.  My self-confidence can’t take another hit and now I think that telling you I would try was the wrong thing to do. I’m cutting this off before I wind up seeing you wearing yesterdays clothes with some girl’s lipstick at the bottom of the shirt.  I thought I could do this, but I don’t think I can.”

“You’re a virgin?”

“Is that all that you got from what I just said?  Unbelievable.  That right there is an example of why this isn’t going to work out.”

“Wait,” he pleaded.  “Just wait.”

Turning on his heel, he ran into his bedroom.  He returned a minute later with a journal in his hands that he frantically paged through until he found what he wanted.  I saw that his hands were shaking as he handed it to me.  Pointing down to the page, he told me to read it.  I recognized his handwriting straight away, and my knees almost buckled when I read the words on the page.

Mia Reeves.  My Mimi.  The first real light I’ve ever found in my dark world

Since the minute I saw her, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her

She’s different where everyone else is the same

And for the first time in my life

I want to try for more

I want to BE more

Can I be more?

I don’t know if I deserve to be happy, but I want to try

Is it okay to try?

I’ve never been so fucking scared of anything in my life

I’ve spent years touching many so that no ONE could touch me

She’s changed that.  I don’t know how, but she’s changed that

Now I don’t want the many

I just want one

Tonight I kissed her and I knew for sure

That the first time she looked at me in class

When I thought

“There’s my girl”

I was right

The truth sits like an elephant on my chest

That this girl could crush me if she finds me lacking

But I’m going to try

Is it okay to try?

Thanks so much, Ella! What a wonderful story!

I’m reading it right now, so look for my interview soon! In the meantime, keep reading for more fun stuff, including links to the prologue and a trailer, another excerpt, and two giveaways!

Teaser:

Tristan’s lips covered mine gently as he started softly before deepening the kiss.  When we turned to face each other fully, I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and ran my fingers through his hair.  He tasted better than I could ever have imagined, and he kissed me like he had a cheat-sheet for what would make me feel the best.  I’ve never been kissed so passionately, or held as if I really matter to someone.  Tristan cradled me in his arms like I was precious to him.

We pulled apart at the same time a few minutes later, and because he didn’t let me go, I didn’t let him go, either.  We stared at each other in silence for a few moments, and I smiled shyly at him, even as I felt a blush steal across from my face.

He smiled back at me as he continued to stare at me with a look of confusion as the seconds passed before he spoke.  “Holy Hell Mia… You make me feel… I don’t even know.  Different?”

That’s like the pot calling the kettle black. The way I feel around Tristan is entirely new.  “Right back at you,” I said quietly.
