Interview:

Welcome, Susan! Tell us more about your book—take us beyond the official “book blurb”.

Incarnation is a story on many levels….   It delves into the world of thought projection, shape shifters and reincarnation.

Give us more info about your main characters—who are they?

Katherine and Richard are characters who are bound together by events of the past.  He definitely has a dark side and she is on a journey of discovery about who she is and why she possesses supernatural abilities.

What scene in your book was the most fun to write, and why?

I love the scene in the castle when all the creatures come slinking in through the ruins.  I can visualize it so easily, the night, the flickering torches, it actually makes me shiver!

Those are the best scenes!

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I have been writing since I was 12 years old, but only became really focused after joining a writing group a year ago.  I am convinced that in order to grow as an artist, you need to immerse yourself in the world of literature.

Very true!

What do you like best about being a writer?

I love having my stories come to life.  I get quite carried away at times!

What is the most challenging part of being a writer?

Just finding the time.

Exactly!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I am presently working on a book with an apocalyptic theme. It’s a bit steam-punky with a few magical creatures thrown in and a portal to an alternate universe.

Sounds interesting!

What authors and/or books have inspired you?

I love Phillip Pullman and Cornelia Funke for YA literature. The Inkspell series and the Dark Materials trilogy were mesmerizing.  When it comes to adult books my favorites are pretty diverse,  including  JRR Tolkein,  Minette Walters, and  George RR Martin.

What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading The Painted Girls by Catherine Buchanan.  I heard her speak about her works and her journey as an author… very inspiring!

Please share a favorite scene from your books with our readers.

“Open your mind,” Richard whispered. I felt his warm breath fanning my cheek.

I tried to twist away from him but he reached out and drew me back.

“Trust me.” His voice sounded soft and seductive against the quiet backdrop of the woods.

A frisson of fear crept down my spine but I closed my eyes and settled back against the slight rise of the hill.  “I’m not sure what you want me to do,”

Richard tried to calm me.  “Just listen to what’s around you.”

“You make it sound so simple.” I shifted my head uneasily in the grass. Forcing myself to relax, I tried to do as he asked, concentrating on the soft sounds of the woods, letting the sun soothe me, willing myself to lie quietly.  The breeze played lightly across my skin, sweet with the scent of clover.  It seemed like forever, but despite my reluctance, I felt myself drifting, beguiled into dream-like state.  The minutes began to pass more slowly as I felt my breathing deepen, and I had a sense of time stretching beyond the small clearing that surrounded us.

I was not prepared when, faintly, I heard him speak again.  His voice was different this time, calling my name, echoing and far away. I opened my eyes and stared at him in shock.  He was leaning over me, watching my face intently, and though I heard him speaking, his lips didn’t move. I watched him, mesmerized, as his thoughts mingled with mine.  His gaze darkened, and I rolled away quickly, springing to my feet.

Wow! Thanks, Susan!
