Barnes and Noble is having a weekend sale on selected Nook books–50% off of 100+ titles now through 1/26. Mind you, a lot of the prices aren’t cheap, but they are half off of the regular price, so if you’re looking for a pricier book that has a higher price tag, you might want to give it a look. Those books that I’ve looked up on Amazon so far have been price matched at well–and a few of them (curse you, Amazon and Audible!) are Whispersync for voice as well.

It’s amazing I have any money left at all after these weekends.

There really is quite a selection here–fiction, non-fiction, cook books, self-help, young adult, and more–so it’s worth giving it a look.

Here’s what I’m thinking of picking up:

The World of Downton Abbey by Jessica Fellowes
$ 7.49 (why don’t I already have this? Oh, right, it’s usually $14.99, and I’m cheap.)

Blurb:

A lavish look at the real world–both the secret history and the behind-the-scenes drama–of the spellbinding Emmy Award-winning Masterpiece TV series Downton Abbey
April 1912. The sun is rising behind Downton Abbey, a great and splendid house in a great and splendid park. So secure does it appear that it seems as if the way it represents will last for another thousand years. It won’t.
Millions of American viewers were enthralled by the world of Downton Abbey, the mesmerizing TV drama of the aristocratic Crawley family–and their servants–on the verge of dramatic change. On the eve of Season 2 of the TV presentation, this gorgeous book–illustrated with sketches and research from the production team, as well as on-set photographs from both seasons–takes us even deeper into that world, with fresh insights into the story and characters as well as the social history.

I’m getting this for my Nook, only because it has a bigger screen and therefore I can see the pictures better. You know, so I can more fully appreciate all the period details. Yep, that’s why.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman $7.99

Blurb: (from B&N, because Amazon’s really stinks for this title)

Sussex, England. A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn’t thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she’d claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy.

Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie—magical, comforting, wise beyond her years—promised to protect him, no matter what.

A groundbreaking work from a master, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out. It is a stirring, terrifying, and elegiac fable as delicate as a butterfly’s wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark.

love Neil Gaiman. I used his (audio) short story to attempt to teach my 7th and 8th graders about foreshadowing, since they have a hard time grasping the concept on their book reviews. He actually narrated it himself, and it was awesome. Somehow I haven’t read any of his adult books, though (unless Stardust counts. Does it?), just his children’s and YA.

It’s price matched at Amazon and Whispersync for voice, though it’s still $11.99 after you buy the Kindle version. If he’s narrating, though, it could be my birthday gift to myself (because a month and a half early is perfectly respectable, right?).

And–yes. It is narrated by the author. Darn you, Audible.

Fallen by Celeste Bradley $3.99

Blurb:

Destined for spinsterhood, Isadora “Izzy” Temple can only dream of finding a husband—of feeling his touch in the dark, his lips on her neck, his passion building with each kiss. Imagine her surprise when she awakens to find she’s not dreaming at all! Lord Julien Blackworth, has mistaken Izzy’s room for his—and he’s fallen into her bed and into her wildest dreams…

When the household discovers a man in her boudoir, Izzy pretends that Julien is her fiancé . Once he spends time playing the part, Julien finds himself falling for the fiesty beauty. But how can Izzy trust that this notorious rake’s feelings are for real—and that she won’t end up being branded a “fallen” woman?

New-to-me-author. This just appealed to me–and not only did Amazon price match, but the audio was only $3.49 when I bought the Kindle version. So, yeah, I went for it. No self control.

I’m trying to get more digital cookbooks, in the hopes that eventually I’ll be able to get more shelf space–except that I haven’t yet actually bought any digital versions of the ones that are currently taking up my shelf space…eh, details. Still, the reviews are pretty good for this one (average is 4+ stars on Amazon), and I’m especially excited about the crock pot recipes–easy for work nights.

They don’t all sound particularly healthy, but low cal is good enough for some nights. Better than high cal AND unhealthy, right?

Thunderstruck by Erik Larson $5.99 (B&N) $5.12 (Amazon)

Blurb:

With Thunderstruck, Erik Larson (The Devil in the White City) delivers another adroit double-threaded story of genius and mayhem. At the center of the plot stands Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen (1862-1910), a mild-mannered American-born homeopathic physician who solved his marital problems by slaying his overbearing wife. After slicing up her body, Crippen quickly embarked with his mistress on an oceanic steamer. Enter Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937), the brilliant Italian electrical engineer and inventor. As Crippen fled across the Atlantic, Marconi took up the wireless chase, which culminated in a two-day race between two ocean liners. Thanks to the new technology, the mass media enjoyed a feeding frenzy of nearly simultaneously updates. Larson covers this literal race to the death (Crippen died on the gallows) with calibrated excitement that readers of his previous books will recognize.

The Devil in the White City was absolutely fantastic. Larson did get a little bogged down in the technical building details for my taste at times, and failed to give me some of the information I craved (who tells you how many guys died on a construction site without telling you how? Honestly.), but overall it was unputdownable. I’ve got the audio of In the Garden of the Beasts (an American family in Hitler’s Berlin) on my iPod, so I think I’ve got to have this one too.

See? Quite the selection–and there’s more than a hundred more where they came from. Give the sale a look–you won’t be sorry. Though your wallet might be a little disgruntled.
