New Release Spotlight and Giveaway: How We Lived by Erin Butler

A new New Adult book–out now!

Book Title: How We Lived
Author:  Erin Butler

Book Synopsis:

Nineteen-year-old Kelsey Larkin’s parents uninvited her to her brother’s funeral. She just wanted to wear jeans and a T-shirt—the clothes Kyle would’ve wanted her in—not wrap herself up in death. So she watched the funeral from afar, like an outsider. Which is just how she feels. Chase came, though, just like she knew he would. Until a few months ago, the three of them had been best friends, and then Chase made a mistake that shattered both families. But when Kelsey looks at him, she doesn’t see her brother’s killer. She sees the boy next door who’s always taken care of her. She sees home.

When Chase tells her his feelings run deeper than friendship, she can’t help but get lost in him. In Chase, she finally has the closure she’s been unable to find anywhere else. But the boy she’s falling in love with is still hiding secrets about the night Kyle died. Secrets that could destroy everything they have…again.

Why Do I Like the Villain? Guest Post and Giveaway from Aderonke Moyinlorun (When Love Hurts)

I’d like to welcome Aderonke Moyinlorun here today to talk about villains–and her latest book, When Love Hurts!

Why do I like the Villain?

As a writer, I find that villains/antagonists are not easy to write. It’s like leaving a part of myself and becoming someone else. Of course, that is what a writer does when he writes every character, but writing a villain is even more challenging.

Let me explain. Bad guys think bad things and do evil things because it’s in their nature. But in most cases, those bad things are not in the writer’s nature. Creating that kind of character requires the writer to shut down his beliefs and be blind to what is right and wrong.

But as a reader, I find that villains are actually likeable. Over time, I’ve found myself falling in love with villains and actually wanting the bad guy to win. A good example is Walter White in Breaking Bad.

A good villain is a villain that you can understand. A villain that does not do bad things just because he loves to do bad things. They have real, understandable motives for what they do. It doesn’t mean the reader/writer necessarily agrees with the bad things they do, but it does means the character is human, and his anger and cruelty can easily be understood.

We know that, in reality, no one is entirely evil. People do bad things, and then, at other times they do good things. So, as you write your book, try to create a character readers can sympathize with.

Thanks, Aderonke! Excellent advice…which of course reminds me of one of my favorite villains, and my favorite villian quote:

Title: When Love Hurts
Author: Aderonke Moyinlorun
Release Date: September 28, 2013
Genre: Romance suspense

Tamara Price’s world is about to tumble down around her and the one responsible for it is none other than Raymond Brock, her ex-boyfriend. She hasn’t seen him in one year after he ran off to Paris and married her best friend.

Tamara is smart, intelligent, single and a divorce attorney. When Raymond asks her to be his divorce attorney, they rediscover a passion that never died and the lies that kept them apart. Only one problem exists- Tamara is better at fixing broken marriages than she is at dissolving them. Can Raymond and Tamara find a way to overcome the obstacle of his wife- short of murder, that is?

Chapter 1

Tamara Price didn’t want to get up from bed. As usual, she hadn’t slept well. Actually, she hadn’t been sleeping well for months now. She could cover up the dark circles beneath her eyes with makeup and hide the weight loss by purchasing smaller-sized clothes, but nothing could be done to offer her sanctuary from the forlorn feeling of being alone, a feeling she had known ever since Raymond Brock walked out of her life without any explanation or goodbye. And even though she had tried everything to avoid being alone, she still felt alone whenever she lay on this damn bed. She had worked hard, twenty-four hours a day seven days a week, until her colleagues forced her into taking this stupid vacation. She didn’t want this vacation, but her colleagues refused to listen. Perhaps, they could tell she was miserable.

Her bedside phone rang, disrupting her thoughts. Rolling onto her back, she stretched a hand to pick up the phone. “Yes this is Ms. Tamara Price…No, I’m on vacation until next week…I understand. Tell Drake to go ahead and handle the case. I’m certain he’ll handle it well…Thank you…That’s fine…Bye for now.”

She dropped the phone, seriously contemplating pulling the covers over her head and staying that way for the next three days. She’d done it before. That fateful morning when she woke up to the harsh reality of the other side of love. She had woken up from a peaceful sleep, on a Saturday morning, to a beautiful dawn. After breakfast, she’d sat down to watch TV when she heard the shocking news. She could still remember every word: Raymond Brock, host of the syndicated talk show, Hello America, is officially off the market after marrying Dahlia Taylor in a small wedding in Paris. For three days, she had stayed in bed without talking to anyone. Each day, the pain in her heart deepened.

Swallowing, she fought tears that seemed to come so easily every time she thought of Raymond. And even though it had been a year since the incident, it still hurt as if it was yesterday. Pain knotted Tamara’s heart. She drew up her knees as if that would make the pain go away. She had managed to lock up the pain all this while, and was still capable of keeping it locked, she told herself.

Almost when she finally decided to pull the covers over her head and stay in bed, she heard her door opened. Startled, she rose and sat up to see who it was.

“Drake, you scared me!” she screeched.

“Oh sorry,” Drake said, his voice not quite apologetic.

“You do not enter my bedroom! I thought it was someone else!”

He laughed, walking over to sit beside her on the bed. “You live in a gated, security-conscious neighborhood, and you’re scared of an intruder?”

She scoffed and tossed her hair over her shoulder. “Risks of the job, I guess.”

“Well yeah, risks of being the best divorce attorney in town! And with your track record of ‘fixing’ people’s marriages, the only thing they’ll ever be tempted to break into your house for would be to surprise you with a fruit basket and a bouquet of flowers. Unless, of course, your client is a mafia boss, then you’re looking at a horse’s head!”

“Okay, smartass! Why’re you here? You could have called.”

Drake grabbed her arm and pulled her out of bed. “I know you’re going to sleep away your three-day break. So I got you something to do instead.” He pushed her toward the bathroom. “Go get ready. Our last client, Tiffany and John, are renewing their vows today. You’re going to be there.”

She struggled. “Drake, you know I don’t like to attend such events.”

“Too late. I told them you’ll be there.” He pushed her into the bathroom and shut the door.

Tamara and Drake became very close back in high school, and then in college at University of Maryland in Baltimore. They went to law school together. After graduation, Tamara had decided to start her law firm, and Drake offered to join her. They had been together since then and been through a lot together. Drake was about six-four, two hundred pounds, with caramel skin. He was good looking and was good with women too.

“Alright, Tamara,” Drake said, raising his voice enough for her to hear him. “I’ve got to rush back to work. See you later.”

“Hey, who was that lady who called my home phone from the office? She said something about a client,” Tamara said, raising her voice, too.

“That must be Sherry. She’s an intern.”

“Are you kidding me? You hired a female intern?”

“Yeah. What’s the prob?”

“You can’t screw a colleague or a client. You know that, right?”

“I’m not planning to have sex with her. And FYI, Tamara, I don’t have sex with every woman I set my eyes on.”

“All those girls you screwed in college? I’ll say yes, you sleep with every woman you set your eyes on.”

He laughed. “I haven’t slept with you yet.”

“I’m your boss, Drake!”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“Shut up, Drake,” she yelled. “And get out of my room.”

“Yes, boss.” He bowed sarcastically and exited her room.

Cover Reveal and Giveaway: Carnival by K.B. Nelson

 Coming this June!

Carnival4 (5)

Carnival by K.B. Nelson
Publication date: June 2014
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Blue’s a carny and he’s got molly. Charlie’s a local and she’s got ninety-nine problems but Blue ain’t one. Enter the world of neon lights….
Charlie never intended to sleep with a perfect stranger at the county fair. Finding out he was a carny was like winning the bonus round of the worlds worst game. Blue grew up in the carnival, never staying anywhere long enough to call home. He didn’t mean to seduce Charlie that night, but he’s use to living life on the edge.

Charlie’s supposed to be packing her bags for college. Blue’s supposed to get in his jeep and drive to the next town. She’s ready to leave for a life she’s not certain she wants and he’s searching for a place to call home.

Unable to resist him, Charlie makes the choice to stay. She follows Blue down the rabbit hole; into a world with no regard for rules and consequences. But when tragedy strikes, will it send her and Blue down a more destructive path? Or will it bring them closer together? Either way, they both come to realize that life is just like a carnival ride.

I grew up on a farm in Ohio, but that’s not very interesting, is it? When I’m not writing you can find me doing one of two things; getting lost on highways or getting lost in the lives of fictional characters. If my heart had two feet, one foot would be in romance and the other solidly in geekdom. I hope you’ll all follow me on my journey through this carnival they call life; I promise there will be a happy ending.

An Interview with Tracy March, Author of A Shot of Red

I’m so excited to have Tracy March here today! Her latest book, A Shot of Red, came out last week and I can’t wait to read it!

Welcome, Tracy! What five things should readers know about you?

  1. I’m always up for travel and adventure—it’s awesome inspiration for settings and stories.
  2. I love baseball. Really. Love. Baseball. (And hot guys in baseball uniforms!)
  3. I’m interested in science and politics and that influences the romantic thrillers I write (think House of Cards meets a medical drama).
  4. My own happily-ever-after with my swoony NASA guy inspires my contemporary romances. <3
  5. I rarely go a day without Diet Coke and Cheez-Its!

Tell us all about your main characters—who are they? What makes them tick? What one thing would they need to have with them if stranded on a desert isle?

My heroine is Mia Moncure, biotech company heiress who’s more interested in doing the right thing than protecting the bottom line. When she falls for a guy, she falls hard, but she keeps her feelings to herself.

My hero is Gio Lorenzo, a super-sexy communications director for a high-ranking senator. Gio rides his BMW motorcycle to work on Capitol Hill. He’s torn between his job and his desire for Mia, since her mother is his boss. The senator has a no tolerance policy for staff romances with members of her family.

If Mia and Gio were stranded on a desert isle, the one thing they’d need to have with them is each other!

Perfect answer!

If your book were being cast as a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?

Physically, Gio was inspired by my baseball boyfriend Michael Morse—left fielder for the San Francisco Giants, so it’s difficult for me to think of him as anyone else. Maybe Michael can act? 😉

I’d say that Brooklyn Decker looks a lot like I imagine Mia.

LOL! I’m sure he’s multi-talented. Plus, of course he’d try…for you 😉

(Momentary break while I do a quick Google image search. I’m a hockey girl…

Ah. I see your point. Very nice.)

How long have you been writing, and what inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing for about ten years now, but I studied and practiced a while before I submitted work for publication. I read a lot of mystery and suspense and I wanted to see if I could write a puzzle and a romance that readers would enjoy.

What do you like best about being a writer?

Plotting my stories. And I love it when I’m writing and all of a sudden an awesome plot point or twist occurs to me. It’s as if the characters are tapping me on the shoulder and asking, “What if this happens?”

Hang on. I’m momentarily distracted by an imaginary Michael Morse tapping on my shoulder…hmmm. 😉

What is the most challenging part of being a writer?

Balancing marketing with writing.

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I’m currently finishing up the final book in my Suddenly Smitten sweet contemporary romance series that will come out later this year. It features sexy Caribbean resort tycoon Trent Hawthorne. After that, I’ll be working on some more contemporary romance stories.

Yay! The Suddenly Smitten books are adorable! Can’t wait 🙂

What authors/books have inspired you?

I’ve been influenced by so many talented writers, but I’ve been most strongly influenced by Sandra Brown. She writes incredible romantic thrillers and contemporary romances. I think I’ve read every one of them. Her career has been long and amazing, and she continues to put out highly anticipated, satisfying novels. I had the opportunity to meet her once at Thrillerfest. She was so kind and gracious, and treated me just like a friend. It was a total fan-girl moment for me!Tracy March and Sandra BrownI have got to get to those Sandra Brown books in my TBR. Soon!

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?

I’m rereading one of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors—The Likeness by Tana French. It’s a literary mystery and I’m amazed again by Tana French’s incredible talent. There are so many passages I read that make me pause—her writing is so vivid and thought-provoking. I always tell my friends that if an angel could write, she would write like Tana French!

Aaand adding to my TBR…again…

Please share a favorite scene from your book with our readers.

Here you go! This is a sexy motorcycle scene from A Shot of Red. 🙂

Mia tentatively grabbed two handfuls of Gio’s leather jacket as he veered onto the parkway and picked up speed, easing the motorcycle through the graceful wooded hills and valleys of Rock Creek Park. The night air was cold and invigorating, much of it blocked from her by Gio’s sheer size and his broad shoulders. Mia wrapped her arms around him and tucked her hands in his coat pockets. She scooted up close and rested against his back, enticed by the scent of leather, leaning in and out of the curves with him, exhilarated by speed and adventure. Exhilarated by him. He felt strong and sturdy in her embrace, raw power emanating from him and the rumbling motorcycle.

At this late hour, they were often alone on the parkway, encountering only an occasional passing car. The surreal thrill of it all swirled through Mia, and her blood tingled. She couldn’t help but wonder what other enticing adventures she’d been missing out on. If any of them were half as exciting as this, she was totally game.

After a good twenty minutes, he pulled onto Wyoming Avenue in Northwest DC. Mia’s quiet, upscale neighborhood practically vibrated with the noise of the motorcycle. She squeezed Gio’s biceps and pointed up the block to the house where she lived, disappointed her time on the bike was nearly up.

Gio eased the bike into her driveway, stopped, cut the engine, and set the kickstand. He stood and took off his gloves and helmet, his dark hair wild and tousled. Mia’s stomach fluttered at the sight of him, his dark eyes glinting in the moonlight. She fussed with the chin strap of her helmet just to have something else to focus on.

“Let me help you with that.” He hung his helmet on the handlebar, hoisted one of his long legs over the bike, and sat facing her.

Gio had been magnetic, even with his back to her. But facing her, he was irresistible. Her insides were a knot of nerves and excitement…and expectation? Was he experiencing the raw chemistry she was feeling?

He tried to unclasp her chin strap, but had difficulty with the catch. Leaning in, he took a closer look. “Enjoy the ride?” he asked, his lips mere inches from hers.

“More than I even imagined I would,” she said softly.

The strap loosened and she tipped her chin with the shifting weight of the helmet. Her lips brushed his ever so lightly and he drew back.

Mia’s heart clamored as he captivated her with his questioning gaze, and she willed herself not to look away. He gently swept his fingertips along her jawline, threaded his fingers through her hair, and pulled her toward him. Her helmet fell to the ground as his lips met hers—strong, supple, and searching.

Mia melted into his kiss, alive with anticipation and overcome with an aching need she hadn’t realized was there. A cool night breeze rustled the shrubs in the nearby hedge, and she shivered. Gio clutched her waist, lifted her onto him as if she were nearly weightless, and wrapped his jacket around her. His lips never left hers, each slow sweep of his tongue seducing her senseless.

He braced his feet on the ground as she straddled him, one hand around his neck with a fistful of his silky dark hair, the other stroking his sandpapery cheek. She’d never pictured herself in a position like this—but that made her even more into it. Her blood ran hot, pulsing through her as if it carried sparks. She shifted on his lap and his breath hitched—maybe the sexiest sound she’d ever heard.

“Gio,” she said breathlessly, liking the sound of his name on her lips. “Let’s go inside.”

New Release Blitz and Giveaway! Five Out of the Pit by Holli Anderson (Five #2)

The second book in the Five series–following Five Out of the Dark–is out now!

Five Out of the Pit by Holli Anderson
(Five #2)
Published by: Curiosity Quills Press
Publication date: March 31st 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

The Five find their way to Moab, Utah where, before they’re even settled in, evil finds them.

As Paige fights to keep from succumbing to the pull of an Incubus that has her marked as his next conquest, Johnathan seeks to find a way to rid her of a curse she willingly accepted in order to save him.

A surprising revelation initiates a long-awaited, yet unexpected, reunion for Alec who discovers a new magical talent he possesses.

The FIVE, along with their mentor, Joe, must figure out what was meant by the last words of a Demon as it was sent back to the Netherworld—a promise of Gathering darkness—and stop the evil before it’s unleashed on the small town of Moab. And, the world.

I was dreaming—some disjointed, nonsensical nightmare—when I felt a heavy pressure on my chest; like someone was sitting on me. I worked to breathe as it became a little harder to push air in and out of my lungs. The feelings of anxiety and doom returned ten-fold and my eyes flew open. Of course all I saw was darkness. An immense black hole where there used to be light.

With a rush of adrenaline I raised my hands to push at whatever was on my chest. I twisted my hips, trying to turn to my side. Something gripped my wrists and forced my hands to the ground beside my head. I felt the weight shift down and legs like a wrestler’s wrap around my knees, pinning me in place with the strength of a bear. A scream froze in my throat. No sound could escape through the icicles of my vocal cords.

A mouth pressed against my ear. The breath unnaturally hot as an unfamiliar man’s voice whispered, “Shhh, Paige. Everything’s fine. You want this. You want me. You’ll never want anything more than what I’m going to give you right now. Just relax and enjoy.” His voice flowed like melted chocolate—smooth, sweet, and addicting.

The most terrifying thing about the words he breathed into my ear was—I believed them. The fear that wrapped around my heart like the tentacles of an octopus just slithered away—replaced by desire as his lips closed over mine, hot and moist. I kissed him back with great intensity. My mind became fuzzy and thoughts were slow to form.

Holli Anderson has a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing—which has nothing to do with writing, except maybe by adding some pretty descriptive injury and vomit scenes to her books. She discovered her joy of writing during a very trying period in her life when escaping into make-believe saved her. She enjoys reading any book she gets her hands on, but has a particular love for anything fantasy.

She lives in Grantsville, Utah, along with her husband, Steve, and their four sons—the same small town in which she grew up.
