Books on Sale: Black Friday Edition

This is me, today and tomorrow…at least the “Can’t–I’m writing” parts 😉

Though I’ve got a busy day ahead of me (Internet shopping only this year–and a limited amount at that) with crazy word count deficits to make up and the interring of my grandmother’s ashes this morning (she passed away two years ago, but donated her body to a local medical school–we recently got her ashes back and are finally doing that last step), I still wanted to let you all know about some of the ebook deals out there right now.

Give them as gifts or keep a few (or a lot) for yourself!

Her Heart for the Asking by Lisa Mondello

Promises made…secrets kept…

Mandy Morgan swore she’d never step foot in Texas again after Beau Gentry left her for life on the rodeo circuit eight years before. He once promised he’d love her forever. But he’d abandoned their love for the rodeo and she hadn’t seen him since. Now she’s back in Texas. Her uncle’s heart is failing and Mandy has to convince him that surgery will save his life. She never dreamed the first thing she’d see when she stepped off the plane would be her biggest nightmare…the one man she’d never stopped loving.

Beau Gentry had the fever for two things: the rodeo and Mandy Morgan. But for Beau, loving Mandy was complicated by his father’s vendetta against her uncle and a promise he’d made to an old friend. Hank Promise, Mandy’s uncle, was more like a father to Beau than his old man had been. The hardest thing Beau had ever done was leave Mandy behind for the rodeo. He can still see the bitterness and hurt on her face. It has killed him all these years to think Mandy had forgotten him…maybe even in the arms of another man. But now they’re both back in Texas, and Beau’s going to do all he can to win back her love.

Once Upon a Ghost by Day Leclaire

Zach Kingston, physics professor and famous ghost debunker, despises con-artists who profit from ghostly scams. And he isn’t about to change his mind just because this scammer’s drop-dead gorgeous and offers the most seductive kisses. Ever.

Rachel Avery is just trying to save her family home. And no nasty, rotten – surprisingly handsome – cynic can change that. If only he weren’t so damn sexy. And if only he didn’t offer the most seductive kisses. Ever.

But they have a deal, witnessed by the media: If Zach can’t scientifically disprove her ghost by Halloween, Rachel wins.

Then Zach meets Rachel’s grandmother and discovers the real reason the Averys are so desperate to sell their story.

To bad his reputation is on the line…

Father Found by Judith Arnold:

Book One of Judith Arnold’s popular Daddy School series.

Jamie McCoy is the ultimate guy: thirty years old, carefree and professionally successful as the writer of a nationally syndicated humor column called “Guy Stuff.” Nine and a half months ago, he spent a week basking on the beach in Eluthera and indulging in a fling with a woman at the resort. Never did he expect to find the unplanned result of that fling—a healthy, wailing baby named Samantha—strapped into a car seat on his back porch, along with a suitcase full of diapers and infant apparel and a note informing Jamie that he’s her father.

Maybe he is and maybe he isn’t. But first things first. He’s never fed a baby or changed a diaper in his life. He doesn’t own a crib or a stroller. In a panic, he phones the nearest hospital, where neonatal nurse Allison Winslow takes his call and tells him about a class she teaches called the Daddy School.

Classes on how to be a dad are exactly what Jamie needs. But when he attends his first class and sees the tall, earnest, amazingly beautiful and even more amazingly competent Allison, he realizes that he might just need more from her than her lectures on how to hold a baby.

Jamie’s efforts to be a father to this precious baby touch Allison. His sense of humor amuses her. His striking good looks turn her on. But how can she trust the sort of guy who’d sleep with a stranger on vacation, without giving a thought to the consequences? How can she give her heart to such a reckless man?

Texas Secrets by Jean Brashear

Up-and-coming chef Maddie Collins finds out that her father’s life was a lie when she is bequeathed a family homeplace she never knew existed—by the husband of the only woman her father ever loved. A former SEAL, sexy cowboy Boone Gallagher arrives back in Texas to discover that the father who drove him away has struck one last blow. Cyber Weekend Sale at Google Play!

Google Play has 100 bestselling ebooks in a variety of genres on sale this weekend, and Amazon at least should be price matching (They did for all the titles below, at least). Some of the romance/YA/NA sale titles include:

Barnes and Noble also has 101 books on sale for $2.99 or less, as well as a listing of kids and teens titles for the same price point. I’m guessing Amazon will match those as well, if they haven’t already.

Phew! That will at least get you started. Happy shopping–and reading! I’m off to write….

New Release and Review: Kristan Higgins’s The Perfect Match (Books two in the Blue Heron series)

Title: The Perfect Match
Author: Kristan Higgins
Series: Blue Heron
Genre: Contemporary romance
Published: 2013
Pages: 441
Format read: audio
Rating: A-

What if the perfect match is a perfect surprise?

Honor Holland has just been unceremoniously rejected by her lifelong crush. And now—a mere three weeks later—Mr. Perfect is engaged to her best friend. But resilient, reliable Honor is going to pick herself up, dust herself off and get back out there… or she would if dating in Manningsport, New York, population 715, wasn’t easier said than done.

Charming, handsome British professor Tom Barlow just wants to do right by his unofficial stepson, Charlie, but his visa is about to expire. Now Tom must either get a green card or leave the States—and leave Charlie behind.

In a moment of impulsiveness, Honor agrees to help Tom with a marriage of convenience—and make her ex jealous in the process. But juggling a fiancé, hiding out from her former best friend and managing her job at the family vineyard isn’t easy. And as sparks start to fly between Honor and Tom, they might discover that their pretend relationship is far too perfect to be anything but true love….

Review:

The Perfect Match is without question a Kristan Higgins novel. Her quirky sense of humor shines throughout, and it’s rife with the fun characters her novels are known for. Individually, I loved both Honor and Tom, and Charlie just broke my heart throughout the whole novel.

The only problem? It felt like Honor and Tom weren’t together nearly enough for much of the book. For the first two-thirds or so, I felt a bit “meh” about them as a couple. Oh, they each thought about how attractive they found the other and they did share a few moments, but it wasn’t until the last third of the book that I really started to believe in their love story.

Part of this might have been the narrator as well–her version of Tom’s accent just didn’t quite do it for me. Now if Tom Hardy, Kristan’s inspiration for his character, had been available…well, that would have been a whole different story then, surely 😉

Once Kristan Higgins decides to “bring it”, though, she goes all out!

The last third of the novel really put me through the emotional wringer. I lost track of the number of times I felt myself getting teary, and I became totally unwilling to stop listening, especially for insignificant reasons like sleeping, showering, and conversing with the kids. (Just kidding, Mini Moes. Kind of.) The last third reminded me why Ms. Higgins is on my auto-buy list. Stick with this one, and you won’t be disappointed!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I still went out an bought the audio, though–because I’m weird like that.

Robbie Terman began her journey as a writer in third grade, when she completed her first (24-page) “novel.”  Many years later, she is published in contemporary romance.  Her heroines are feisty, her heroes Hot (yup, that’s with a capital H!).  And, when you read her books, if you cry a little and laugh a lot, that’s just the reaction she was hoping for.

When she’s not writing, Robbie can usually be found doing one of three things: shopping for shoes and handbags at Nordstrom; trying a new restaurant (or attempting a new recipe); or relaxing on the couch and catching up on her favorite television programs (if you’re wondering which ones, open up a TV Guide and take your pick.  You’ve probably guessed right!).

Indie Author with my first Romance novel, Charity’s Warrior, and now the second in the series, Charity’s Secrets, publishing on Amazon Kindle, Creatspace, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords.

I’m very passionate about writing stories full of love, lust, eroticism, and strong characters entwined around each other in an interesting, suspenseful journey.

East coast born and raised, I’m married, extremely happily, with 4 kids, 3 of which are now young adults (not sure when that happened).

I’m a COO in my technology-based “day job,” which requires a mix of technical and creative writing for both internal and client-facing materials, but it was not satisfying my artistic spirit. Writing the “Charity” series has been absolutely fulfilling and exciting.

My favorite writing takes place on my phone while lying on the Southernmost Beach in Key West, where I try to go at least twice a year.

Excerpt

Behind me, the door swung shut quietly in its hinges, locking itself after it clicked into the jamb.

“Justin?”

There’s no answer. Maybe he’s not home yet.

I’m putting my bag down when I hear the voice behind me. “Get up against the wall—NOW! Put your hands out,” he demands.

There’s no point in resisting. I step up to the foyer wall and nervously place my hands against it, waiting to see what the next move will be. My pulse is a loud whomp in my ears.

The sound of his footfalls fill the small space, approaching on me slowly, deliberately, until I see his feet on the floor between mine, his bare feet and bare legs. Strong hands lift the heavy coat off me and toss it to the floor beside us and then return to my shoulders where they begin to coil up my hair. A familiar hardness presses into the small of my back.

“I’ve been thinking about you all day,” Justin whispers into my ear, making my knees weak.

“And what, exactly, were you thinking about?” I breathe, praying for his magical hands.

His left hand pulls my hair, turning my face toward his. “I thought about making you cry with pleasure. It’s the only way I can tolerate your devastating absence.” He quickly bites my lower lip, tempting me. “I love you, Warrior. And I need you.”

Justin’s right hand slithers around to the front of me under the bottom of my shirt, rising up between my breasts to grab my bra like a handle. Then both of his hands pull me tightly against him, molding me into his warm body.

My lips ache for him, my hunger for the taste of his tongue spills over. “Kiss me, please!” I beg. “Touch me like a man should touch a woman.”

“I’m going to do everything to you that a man should,” he growls.

His mouth finds mine, the pleasure of it searing all of my senses. He tugs my hair a little more and completes the seal between our lips, circling his tongue around mine. Underneath my shirt, his powerful hand lets go of my bra and gently grabs my breast, pressing the fleshiness between his fingers. He lets me hear a low moan deep in his chest. It’s more felt against my body than it’s heard by my ears.

It doesn’t matter that want more, that my clit is throbbing for his touch, Justin makes me wait for it. He releases my hair and my breast, both hands moving to the bottom of my shirt where he pulls at it uncaringly, ripping it over my head and tossing it on top of my coat. My bra comes off me with the same ease, and he spins me around to face him, pushing my back against the wall.

“My fucking God! I will never get tired of looking at you,” his deep voice confesses while his eyes widen with lust.

There’s no misunderstanding him. My own eyes were taking in his fully unclothed body with the same excitement and enthusiasm. The thick muscles of his chest rise and fall with his heavy breathing, and his well-defined shoulders beg me to claw my nails into them.

Christ! How does he stay in that shape?

Fuck it—I don’t care!

It’s Perfect Weather for a Cozy Mystery! Read It and Weep by Jenn McKinlay (a Library Lover mystery)

Title: Read It and Weep
Author: Jenn McKinlay
Series: Library Lover Mysteries
Genre: Cozy mystery (just a touch of romance)
Pages: 276
Format read: print (I know! Shocking.)
Rating: B+

This was a cute and cozy mystery, and quite a bit different from my usual read. I ended up really enjoying it, though, and probably will check out others in the series in the near future.

Things I liked:

-The main character is a librarian–awesomeness.

-She and her friends get together and talk books during “crafternoons” where they make crafts and eat snacks (loosely) based on the book they’ve read.

-Best. Titles. Ever. Seriously adorable.

-Really funny writing. For example–Lindsey has a brush with death (as she is rather a younger version of Jessica Fletcher from Murder She Wrote, this is understandable–did I just totally date myself there?) and just at the crucial “will she die or won’t she?” moment, she overhears, “Oh, my god she’s going to die!” Her reaction?

Lindsey wasn’t positive but she thought that last voice was Ms. Cole and she didn’t sound nearly as upset as Lindsey thought she should.

Giggles. Mrs. Cole is the coworker the rest of them refer to as “the Lemon”.

-I didn’t know “whodunnit” until close to the end…and then it was from the same clue Lindsey used. Though I figured it out first, thankyouverymuch. Red herrings along the way were fairly clever.

-HUGE surprise toward the end, which I did not see coming AT ALL. Well done, Ms. McKinlay!

-Fantastic literary references–Shakespeare AND Austen. What more could one want?

Things I wasn’t so crazy about (though they weren’t deal breakers):

-Probable love triangle/love interest left hanging for entire book and into next one in the series. Definitely not my favorite plot device, either one of them.

-Lindsey came across as a bit wishy-washy in regards to her love life; I would have like to see her more firm and definite.

-Yep, that’s about it.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read and the fun/quirky bits far outweighed the parts I was less crazy about. As long as Lindsey can make a choice in the near future, I plan to keep reading. If she decides to go all Stephanie Plum on us though, no promises….

B+ rating for a fun mystery with a touch of literary fun.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Spotlight New Release and Review with a Giveaway: Bittersweet Magic by Nina Croft

Tagline:  Only he can save her…

Bittersweet_Magic_900pxSynopsis: Roz has been indebted to the demon Asmodai for five hundred years, and her freedom is just around the corner. She’s beautiful and seemingly kind, but she’s hiding something. And he’ll find out who she is and what she really wants once he uses his power to get inside her head. But Piers has no idea that Roz is immune to his mind-control…or that he is simply a pawn in her dangerous mission for freedom.

Review: I haven’t had a chance to read book one in this series yet–but after finishing this one, I’m definitely going to. You don’t have to have read the first one (Bittersweet Blood) in order for this one to make sense, but it definitely would help–and heads up, you’ll definitely want to read it once you get a taste. Roz, our heroine, is new to the universe contained in the books as well–technically, she’s been a part of it for roughly five hundred years, yet was mostly kept isolated for reasons that are later explained–so readers unfamiliar with The Order and the rules of this particular universe can learn them right along with her.

Still, though, you–like Roz–will definitely feel like the odd man out at times, with most of the other characters sharing inside information that you lack. However–this can all be quickly remedied, by reading book one first! 😉

Even going into this novel blind, it drew me in immediately. I wanted to figure out what was going on right along with Roz, and Piers intrigued me just as much as he did her. Those two had some fantastic chemistry, and every time they shared a scene you could feel the heat. I loved that Roz was a very capable heroine, and absolutely adored the scenes where she gave just as good as she got with Piers. The ones where she resisted his ability to mesmerize, yet let him think that he had succeeded? Priceless. And he so needed that come down!

There’s an excellent cast of characters in this book, which means a wealth of opportunities for future books. Besides our hero and heroine–a thousands-year-old vampire and a possible witch–we have warlocks, werewolves, demons, shapeshifters, and fey. Even the two mortal characters here–Ryan and Maria, a police detective and nun–are well fleshed-out and interesting; I’m hoping we’ll see them in future books as well as the supernaturals.

The one and only complaint I have about this novel is that the end was a tad bit on the rushed side–I did like how everything was resolved; all the pieces came together nicely–but it all happened very, very quickly. Admittedly, though, this could also be attributed to my not wanting to see the story end…

If you like paranormal reads with drama and sexy romance, this is definitely one series you’ll want to try. So do yourself a favor and enter the giveaway below–when you win, you can use the gift card to buy both books in the series and have plenty left over for holiday shopping! 🙂

Here’s a dirty talking snippet just for you guys:

He leaned forward and spoke right against her ear. “Come for me right now and I’ll let you ride me as hard as you want later. I know what gets you off. I saw it in your eyes last night. You want to throw me down and fuck me, duchess? Good. I’m in the mood to let you.”

Now you see why she’s been dubbed the Queen of Dirty Talking!

About Asking for Trouble

Brent Mason and Hayden Winstead can’t stand each other. She plans exclusive parties for her rich family’s charities. He’s a rough and tumble cop who rigs explosives for a living. Could two people be any less suited for conversation? They think not and prefer to keep it that way.

Unfortunately, their two best friends are deeply, disgustingly in love. Forced together, the mutual attraction simmering beneath the surface of Brent and Hayden’s non-relationship grows with every argument until it explodes into a scintillating night of mind-blowing sex. And it won’t be the last, as far as Brent’s concerned.

Hayden has a secret, though. Her father’s company is relying on a merger to save them from financial ruin, and only Hayden’s marriage to the CEO’s wealthy son can secure the deal. If she’s to protect her family, she’ll have to forget Brent. And he has no intention of being forgotten.

About Protecting What’s His

PWH500px

She’s running from the law, and the law wants her bad.

The opportunity was just too damn delicious for Ginger Peet to pass up. The purse full of money she finds—$50,000 to be exact—could give her and her teen sister the new start they need. So she grabs the cash, her gothy sibling, and their life-sized statue of Dolly Parton, and blows outta Nashville in a cloud of dust. Chicago, here we come…

Turns out, Chicago has some pretty hot cops. Hot, intense, naughty-lookin’ cops like Derek Tyler, who looks like he could eat a girl up and leave her begging for more. And more. Tempting as he is, getting involved with the sexy homicide lieutenant next door poses a teensy problem for a gal who’s on the lam. But one thing is certain—Derek’s onto her, and he wants more than just a taste.

And as far as he’s concerned, possession is nine-tenths of the law.

Christmas Past by Susanna Fraser

Time-traveling PhD student Sydney Dahlquist’s first mission sounded simple enough—spend two weeks in December 1810 collecting blood samples from the sick and wounded of Wellington’s army, then go home to modern-day Seattle and Christmas with her family. But when her time machine breaks, stranding her in the past, she must decide whether to sacrifice herself to protect the timeline or to build a new life—and embrace a new love—two centuries before her time.Rifle captain Miles Griffin has been fascinated by the tall, beautiful “Mrs. Sydney” from the day he met her caring for wounded soldiers. When he stumbles upon her time travel secret on Christmas Eve, he vows to do whatever it takes to seduce her into making her home in his present—by his side.

Loving Luce will stamp a demonic target on her back and thrust Wade into a frenzied whirlwind of hilarious misunderstandings and, quite possibly, a stripping gig for emptynesters. The Awakening: Britton by Abby Niles

The Awakening #3

“I would lick that man up one side and down the other.”

Half-shifter and lead SPAC agent, Val Calhoun, has listened to women gush over the Don Juan of the precinct for the last four years. Yeah, Detective Britton Townsend is hot and has stunning blue eyes, but that foul mouth he saves only for her? What a waste of good looks. And no way does Val want that mouth anywhere near hers.

When the shifter community is threatened, Val is assigned to the case…and fails. So the High Council turns to the rogue shifter they’d sentenced to twenty years as a human–that same obnoxiously sexy Detective Townsend. And sends the two arch-enemies deep into the North Carolina Mountains-—together, and alone.

Being stuck in a tiny honeymoon cabin with Miss Castration and only one bed is definitely not Britton’s idea of a good time. But the High Council doesn’t take no for an answer. After his shifter abilities are restored, Brit is once again susceptible to the dreaded, irreversible bonding instinct, the Drall. Thankfully, all he’s ever felt for Val is intense loathing, no reason to worry. Right? All he has to do is solve this case pronto, and he can go back to his footloose Casanova ways. That is, if they don’t kill each other first. Or worse…fall in love.

Missed the first book in the Awakening series? While these books stand alone, it can be fun to go back and see how the other couple got together. And in celebration of book #3’s release, book one, The Awakening: Aidan is on sale for just $0.99 as well, so grab it while you can!

The Awakening: Aidan by Abby Niles

The Awakening #1

Is the gift of eternal love a blessing or a curse?

After years of counseling grieving shifters, psychiatrist and half-shifter, Dr. Jaylin Avgar has become jaded on shifter mating. She wants to marry a human and forget about the love for eternity crap. Then she meets Aidan O’Connell, an infuriatingly laid back shifter who represents everything she doesn’t want. Yet, the more he pursues her, the more she craves a future with him. Only one thing stands in her way: death. Can she overcome her fear of losing Aidan to the one guarantee in life?

Millionaire consultant, Aidan O’Connell knows he’ll one day meet a woman who’ll awaken an unrelenting mating instinct. Unfortunately, that woman is Jaylin, who has no qualms about telling him that he and his so-called eternity can shove it. When she pushes him away, he takes a drastic step so she can no longer escape. The close proximity throws the instinct into overdrive. Can he control the need engrained in him until he’s certain she will reciprocate the bond, or will a moment of weakness doom him to hell on earth?
