Release Day Review! DESPERATE GIRLS by Laura Griffin (Wolfe Security #1)

Desperate Girls cover
Desperate Girls
by Laura Griffin

Synopsis:

Defense attorney Brynn Holloran is right at home among cops, criminals, and tough-as-nails prosecutors. With her sharp wit and pointed words, she has a tendency to intimidate, and she likes it that way. She’s a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom, but in her personal life, she’s a mess.

When a vicious murderer she once helped prosecute resurfaces and starts a killing spree to wipeout those who put him behind bars, one thing becomes clear: Brynn needs to run for her life.

With no help from the police, Brynn is forced to take matters into her own hands, turning to a private security firm for protection. But when Brynn defies advice and gets involved in the investigation, even the former Secret Service agent assigned to protect her may not be able to keep her safe. With every new clue she discovers, Brynn is pulled back into the vortex of a disturbing case from her past.

As the clock ticks down on a manhunt, Brynn’s desperate search for the truth unearths long-buried secrets and reignites a killer’s fury.

Review:

Note to self: I must remember not to get too attached to whomever Laura Griffin starts the first chapter of her books with. They’re never long for this world.

Sigh. Honestly, I should know better by now.

In other (related) news: a new series from Ms. Griffin! Woot!

I loved Desperate Girls (though I’m unsure as to where the title comes from…? Not going to spend much time on it, but it is a headscratcher. The cover sure is pretty, though…) Brynn and Erik were a great heroine and hero, each strong on their own but even better when working–or decidedly not actually working 😉 –together. (Erik’s “I knew I loved you when…” confession in the epilogue was awesome–it was the cherry on top of the book for me!)

The story was a nice blend of romance and suspense; it didn’t move their relationship along too fast to be believed, and the courtroom drama and murderer-on-the-loose bits kept the story going at a steady clip. There is a twist toward the end that I didn’t see coming for most of the book, until I did (I was waiting for the other shoe to drop so hard, you guys! You just knew something was going to happen soon, but I wasn’t quite sure what it would be…) and when I did realize what was happening, I legit gasped. Seriously, ask the two cats I startled out of at least one of their lives each. They’re still annoyed with me. (Not a unique occurrence, so I’m not losing sleep over it.)

Anyway, I’m drained. Brynn and Erik’s epilogue vacation sounds like just what I need to help me recover…even without my own personal Erik there 😉

For fans of her Tracers series, it is connected–Erik’s boss at Wolfe Security is Mark Wolfe’s brother. You absolutely don’t have to have read any of that series’ books to enjoy this one, but if you have, you’ll appreciate the connection.

I can’t wait to read more from this series!
