Book Blitz and Giveaway: PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND THE PERFECT BET by Marilyn Brant (Perfect #2)

I am such a sucker for Jane Austen remakes! 🙂

Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet
by Marilyn Brant
(Perfect #2)
Publication date: July 20th 2014
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

The course of true love doesn’t always run smooth…

Everyone thought Beth Ann Bennet and Dr. Will Darcy had an unexpected romance in Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match (Perfect #1).

Now, Beth’s best friend, Jane Henderson, and Will’s first cousin, Bingley McNamara, begin their own unlikely love story in Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet (Perfect #2), which starts at the Bennet/Darcy wedding when the two of them find themselves in the roles of maid of honor and best man for the newlyweds.

Jane is an interning school psychologist and a woman who wears an angelic mask in public, but she’s not as sweet tempered as she’d like everyone to believe. Turns out, she may have just crossed paths with the one person who’ll unnerve her enough to get her to reveal her true self.

As for Bingley, he’s a wealthy, flirtatious, compulsively social guru of finance, who likes to wager on stocks and, let’s face it, on just about anything that strikes his fancy. But this dedicated ladies’ man may have finally met the woman who’ll challenge his bachelor ways!

Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet…where life’s biggest gamble is the game of love.

**Note: PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND THE PERFECT BET is part of the “Perfect” series, but it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel**

Bingley couldn’t help but sneak a few more looks at the fiery maid of honor, remembering the way they’d first met four months ago. Jane had seemed so…nice, for want of a better word. Too sweet for him to want to tamper with or tease too much, although Beth hinted there was more to Jane than her pleasant veneer might suggest.

He hadn’t believed that at first but, oh, he believed it now, as she swiveled to face her friend, sending another death stare in his direction, then a much kinder, warmer look to his cousin.

“You’re gonna be really happy, Cuz,” he whispered to Will, who was smiling at his bride Beth as if he’d just won the lottery and it was being hand delivered to him in a pretty package of white tulle.

“Thanks, Bingley,” his cousin murmured. “I owe you, you know. None of this would’ve happened without you.”

Bingley swallowed away a sappy emotion he didn’t want to succumb to in public and clenched his jaw to keep from saying anything either overly sentimental or just plain stupid. Much as the whole commitment thing gave him hives, Bingley couldn’t have been happier for Will. The guy deserved every ounce of wedded bliss.

“Anything for you,” he finally managed, meaning it, but unable to stop the wave of irritation that hit him in the gut when he caught Jane rolling her eyes at him from the periphery.

No, she wasn’t nearly as nice as she appeared, although he’d thought she was pretty awesome during the engagement party a couple of months back. Jane had downed, perhaps, a few too many glasses of celebratory champagne, and the two of them had ended up in the coat room, making out like teenagers. He quickly learned three other very interesting facts about her:

She wore some really racy undergarments beneath her simple, classically cut clothes.

She could do several wickedly imaginative things with her tongue. Both excellent discoveries, in his opinion.

But her emotions jumped up and down like an insanely volatile stock during a wild trading day.

Bingley exhaled and tried to stop his mind from playing the X-Ray Vision game every time he caught a glimpse of Jane standing demurely by the altar.

Although, how could he keep himself from wondering if she had that leopard-spotted bra on underneath her red dress, like the one she’d been wearing in July, hmm? Or, why she had all but sprinted away from him when he saw her again a few days later, and why she’d studiously avoided him at the few other events they’d both had to attend since then… They’d barely made it past second base at the engagement party. Was she embarrassed? Had he unknowingly done something wrong?

C’mon, man, get a grip!

He knew from years of experience that he was better off not caring about what women thought of him. Keeping his emotions out of any relationship was the key.

Seeing Will with Beth together had lulled him—temporarily—into believing that whole “happily ever after” thing might happen for him, too. Their connection through that online dating site had encouraged him—briefly—that a “Love Match” wasn’t impossible. So he’d entertained the idea of dating more seriously when he met Jane.

Big mistake.

GUARDIAN Synopsis:

Sometimes, things that go bump in the night are real.

My name is Whitney Lane. I’m sixteen years old and at first, I thought I was crazy.

I kept seeing shadows move along walls, and hearing whispers around corners, but whenever I looked, there was never anything there.

Until one day, there was.

Our world isn’t what we think. There are things around us, good things, bad things, scary things.

Things that we tell ourselves aren’t real, but they are.

They’re very real, and they’re terrifying.

I’ve been swept up now, in a battle of good and evil, confused about love and what is supposed to be love, but isn’t. I don’t know what to think anymore. I can’t trust my emotions and I don’t know what is true.

There’s only one thing I know for sure.

Nothing is what it seems.

Ready to Wed
by Cindi Madsen
Release Date: 7/22/14
Genre: Contemporary

Book Synopsis:

Just jilted.

Dakota Halifax loves to be in love. In fact, as one of Las Vegas’s premier wedding planners, she’s built a whole career around romance. Which is why her own wedding has to be nothing short of perfect. And then her fiancé jilts her. While she’s waiting in her wedding dress. On a cruise ship already out at sea.

Once back on dry land, Dakota tries to pour her heart into her business and weekly wedding advice column, Get Ready to Wed. But how can the heartbroken celebrate others’ true love? When she reconnects with her childhood best friend, surprisingly sexy and all-grown-up casino bouncer Brendan West, Dakota wonders if maybe she can fall back in love with being in love. But then her ex reappears, begging for another chance and suddenly Dakota questions if she’ll ever understand love. Can someone once-burned and twice-shy ever find her way down the aisle again?

This was another so-fun-to-read book; I’m having a real run of good luck lately. A perfect summer, in other words 🙂

First person POV, when done well and with an interesting character, can really make a book–and that’s exactly what we have here. Seeing everything from Dakota’s perspective is what makes this book so entertaining. Her color-coded to-do lists, both for work and for her personal life were a riot–and perfectly demonstrated her need to be in control of everything. Some examples of items on her list:

get over my bitterness toward love

I supposed I’d try extra hard not to punch her (Dakota’s witchy-with-a-B coworker). Even make it a goal on my to-do list and everything

attempt a decent conversation (with same coworker)

Get clothes from Grant’s (the ex who left her on the altar–er, beach), and start to get closure from him

Stop being scared of a real relationship with Brendan and just let it happen

I loved her lists. To make her life even more manageable, Dakota also used color coding, which she explained to Brendan at one point:

“Code Fuchsia?” he asked, and it took me a second to realize I’d brought it up, and that of course he didn’t know what it meant.

“It s-started as a joke,” I stuttered. “For bridal meltdowns. Like the terror code alert, but fancier colors. The brighter the color, the more dire the situation. It sorta seeped into my daily life, too. I even color code my to-do list. Keeps me on top of the high-action items.”

He nodded like it wasn’t an odd thing to do, but his twitching mouth said he was fighting the urge to mock me for it.

“The full code is actually Fanatic Fuchsia, Temperamental Tangerine, Wary Canary, Cautious Cobalt, down all the way to Low-Key Lime. Although sometimes Lime is just a level of shock that appears low-key but is masking Tangerine or even Fuchsia.”

“No purple?” Definitely mocking me now, a sexy smile curving his lips.

“Not on the code scale, but there’s Purple Passion of course. So something I or my bride care a lot about, but there’s not the meltdown factor involved. It’s more like good job, there’s some Purple Passion going on over there.” I shook my head. “I can’t believe I just told you all of that.”

“I can’t believe I’ve missed out on Purple Passion all my life.”

The lists, color coding, and her “Ready to Wed” newspaper articles are woven throughout the book, showing just how out-of-her-control Dakota’s life is at the beginning and how hard she’s trying to wrestle it back into submission as the story continues. It was a definite benefit here not being able to see things from either of the guys’ POVs–we’re in the dark just as much as Dakota is about their feelings and motivations, which kept me turning the pages, as anxious as she was.

Well, almost as anxious. I didn’t assign any colors to my emotional state. 😉

Ready to Wed has a definite chick-lit feel to it, but since I love well-written chick lit, this was nothing but a giant plus as far as I’m concerned. I adore flawed characters who admit their flaws (because already knowing you’re crazy puts you a step above those who think they’re “normal”, am I right?) and manage to figure out a way to make things better for themselves without depending on others to do it for them.

Throw in a book-boyfriend-worthy, supportive hero, and I’m a goner.

Such a fun read–I’d give it three thumbs up that were possible 🙂

Cover Reveal: WITHIN THESE WALLS by J.L. Berg

We’re so excited to reveal the cover for WITHIN THESE WALLS by J.L. Berg, which releases August 18th!

WTW iBooks

Within these walls, he became my solace, my sanctuary and my strength.

I am not strong. I am just a survivor of circumstance.

Isn’t that what we all do? Survive?

Each of us has our own set of circumstances to muddle through. Mine are just more…complicated.

Born with a severe heart defect, I’ve seen the inside of a hospital room more than my own bedroom.

I was drowning, a prisoner to the illness that owned me, until he appeared. He thinks he’s blocked out the world with his tattoos and hard exterior, but I see the real Jude, the one he so desperately wants to forget.

But is he the answer to my prayers or will he break my already damaged heart forever?

My name is Lailah Buchanan, and this is our story of hope, redemption and sacrificing it all for the one you love.

Within these walls he became my solace, my sanctuary and my strength.

Like a white knight, he saved me from a life of gray and showed me a world full of color.

Within these walls, I gave myself to a man who said he would always fight for me.

Love me until the end of time.

But sometimes, not even love is enough when life gets in the way.

When your heart is already damaged beyond repair, what is there left to break?

Within these walls, I gave my less than perfect heart to the man I loved.

And then…he walked away.

New Release Review: THE TYCOON’S CONVENIENT BRIDE…AND BABY by Shosanna Evers

Don’t forget the blog tour is going on right now! Enter the Rafflecopter to win here.

The Tycoon’s Convenient Bride…and Baby
by Shoshanna Evers

After her brother and his wife go missing and are presumed dead, Lauren Peters plans to raise their infant daughter. Her brother’s will, however, stipulates that baby Callie can only be raised by a married couple. Lauren’s as single as they come.

Mack Hansen can’t stand idly by while his business partner’s baby is thrown into a foster home. As he sees it, there’s only one solution—he and Lauren will marry for the sake of the baby—and he’ll keep his attraction to her at bay.

Lauren knows that Mack is all about business, including their marriage of convenience. But her unexpected feelings for him have her turned upside down. With passion sizzling between them, can Mack keep Lauren from stealing his heart…and becoming his wife for real?

This book has me torn. On the one hand, I like the premise–it makes somewhat more sense than many of the other “fake marriage” stories out there. (Key word there being somewhat. In this day and age it’s hard to come up with a 100% plausible reason.) I also enjoyed the characters–both Lauren and Mack are likable, down-to-earth kinds of people (for all that Mack is insanely rich) and don’t even get me started on baby Callie. Absolutely adorable, though she does tend to let them both off a little easily in the brand-new-to-parenting department. Still, so far, so good.

Then we get to the but…

If my brother and wife were missing at sea and presumed dead–or my business partner/best friend, for that matter–I would absolutely want more proof sooner, not later, that they actually were in some sort of witness protection program. I wouldn’t be okay with going on the assumption that that’s what was going on after being told of (or having) one conversation with the brother saying it was a possibility. I’d expect some kind of confirmation somehow and not be satisfied until I got it. (Especially since they’re twins, and presumably even closer than your average siblings. Lauren mentions more than once about the whole “twin connection” thing, so you’d think…)

Almost all of the relationship conflict could have been solved in a single, honest, actual conversation. Instead, every time the two characters talked each only heard what they expected to hear and completely twisted around what was actually said to fit their preconceived ideas. Drove. Me. Crazy. Just talk, already!

In all, it was a decent book–it made for a pleasant morning’s read–but it didn’t quite live up to its potential. I would definitely give another book by this author a chance, however, in the hopes that this one was just a one-off.

Excerpt 1

“I know you love that little girl, Lauren. And I know you love your brother enough to not want his daughter to leave this family. Joe wanted us to take care of her. He said so in his will.”

“He didn’t mean us, together,” she said. “In fact, I’m pretty sure Joe would freak out if he thought you were making a move on me. He’s been warning me away from you since you guys were roommates in college.”

Mack waved his hand as if to clear away her concerns. “I’m not making a move on you. This is business. And Joe would understand that extraordinary circumstances warrant unusual solutions.”

“But we’re not married, Mack.”

“It’s just a piece of paper,” he said, shrugging. “We can go down to the courthouse this very afternoon and make it official. It won’t be a real marriage, of course. It would be in name only.”

“It wouldn’t be a marriage in name only, Mack,” she said. “Don’t you see? If we’re living together to raise Callie, it’ll be…it’ll feel very real. At least to me.”

He leaned in so close she had to tilt her head up to keep looking into his eyes. “Is that a problem? We’ve known each other for a long time. I think we could take care of Callie together, at least until Joe and Marisol return. We don’t need to really be in love to get a piece of paper that says we’re man and wife.”

Hmm. What he said made sense. They didn’t need to be in love to get married, not really. Love. It would be so amazing to find a man who’d love her, who’d want to stay with her forever. Not someone like her ex-boyfriend Steve who had waited until his sister had a baby to realize he wanted his own children, something she could never give him. Or any man.

Could this be her only chance to get married?

“For as long as I’ve known you,” she said, “you’ve always said you’d never settle down. Ever.”

“I never thought this would happen, either. Things change. I have a penthouse in Manhattan—plenty of room for you and Callie to move in. We only need to be married until her parents come back. Then we’ll have to be legally separated for a year before we can divorce.”

Divorce? “How do you know about that?”

He laughed. “Thomas schooled me on the legalities of marriage when Joe and Marisol got together, and what it would mean for our joint assets. But it shouldn’t be a big deal,” he said, “unless you have some boyfriend I don’t know about waiting in the wings, wanting to marry you, instead?”

She blushed. Damn him, he always made her blush. “No. But—what about Callie?”

“We’ll share joint custody, of course.” Mack smiled at her as if that solved everything.

“No.” Lauren shook her head resolutely, tearing her eyes away from his handsome face. “This is crazy. People don’t do this kind of thing anymore.”

“What kind of thing?” he asked, amusement creeping into his voice.

Why did he have to be so good-looking?

“A…a marriage of convenience.”

“Stop thinking of it as a real marriage,” Mack said. “Joe was my best friend. I have an obligation to do what he would have wanted me to do. So just marry me and help me raise Callie, like your brother wanted.”

He tilted her chin up, forcing her to look in his chocolate-colored eyes. “Please,” he said softly. “Marry me, Lauren. For Callie’s sake. Put up with me for one year.”

“Everything’s just business with you, Mack.”

Mack’s lips curved into a small smile. “It sounds like you don’t want to miss out on the other benefits of matrimony.”

“Other…benefits?” The words came out breathlessly as images from her dream of him ran through her mind.

He ran one large hand down her cheek, smoothing her hair behind her ear. The light touch tickled her senses, lighting a fire deep within her. “You know,” he murmured. “Benefits.”

“I can’t…I can’t think of any benefits.” Her skin tingled where his hand lingered. His mouth, mere inches from her lips, became the focus of her world.

“I can.”

Book Blast and Giveaway! SEMPER MINE by Lizzie Ford (Sons of War #1)

I LOVE military heroes–can’t wait to read this series!

Award-winning author Lizzy Ford gives us an emotional, sexy read with her first Sons of War novel, SEMPER MINE.

A Marine captain tortured by the death of his men in Iraq returns home and falls in love with the sister of one of the slain, who blames him for the massacre that killed her brother.  SEMPER MINE is a standalone novel in the Sons of War contemporary military romance series.

“A freak accident landed both of the Khavalov twins under my command, just before a routine mission turned into a nightmare. I brought home one twin in a coffin and the other in a coma missing his leg. I did everything right – and still people died. I can’t forget that night or how many lives it changed, including mine.

It’s natural for their sister, Katya, to blame me. I made one decision in the middle of a firefight, and it shattered her sheltered world. I’m the ice to her fire, and when we first meet, it’s not pretty. I don’t fear war or death, and I am definitely not going to let a beautiful woman with a quick temper and broken heart scare me off, either. I know she’s hurting, and I’m determined to make sure she’s okay. It’s the least I can do for the twins.

I may have failed them that night, but I won’t fail her. What I’m not counting on: the feelings she ignites within me.” – Captain Sawyer Mathis

“Captain Mathis.” It’s the voice of Ms. Khavalov, the sister of the Khav brothers. There’s an edge to it, one I recognize too well from other funerals.

I’d rather deal with insurgents than grieving families. It’s a cold thought stemming from trying to keep myself numb this week. I’m here for the family members as well as my fallen men, but I never thought it’d be so hard.

I turn to face her.

The stinging slap she lands across one cheek is a definite first. It’s enough to jar me but not enough to knock me out of my stance at attention. I can take a blow pretty well after a lifetime filled with them.

“You were supposed to bring them both back alive!” she says in a choked voice.

“I am sorry for your loss, ma’am,” I say calmly.

She pushes up her veil, and I stare.

The twins look like their father, and I can only assume their sister resembles their mother. She’s stunning, from the light hazel eyes to her chiseled features and the delicate, quivering chin. In her twenties, she’s got the determined set of her jaw that I know from the twins and a gleam in her eyes that tells me she’s just as smart.

“That’s it?” she whispers. “You’re sorry?”

“He died bravely, ma’am,” I add.

Her eyes widen. “One of my brothers is gone and the other may never wake up!”

Trust me. I know. I don’t say anything. Part of the grieving process is anger, and I’ve been the target of it for a great many family members. If it helps them sleep at night, then I don’t mind.  God knows I don’t sleep anymore. Someone should.

“Forgive Katya. She does not know what we do about war, Captain Mathis,” her father says, approaching. His Russian accent is heavy, his words slow. His bushy eyebrows twitch.

“It is not those who were lost but those who were saved that should be counted.”

“Don’t patronize me, baba!” Katya snaps. With a furious look at me, she marches away, breaking into a run after a few steps. I can hear her sobs.

I hate seeing women cry. It makes me edgy. Turning my attention to her father, I hold the flag out to him on both my palms.

His eyes mist over. “Thank you. You are a good man, Captain Mathis.” He takes it and kisses it. “Come.” Their father takes my elbow and guides me towards the gate she fled through.

“Tell me how he died defending his country and his men.” He gazes at me with sorrow and compassion mixed with hope.

“He did, sir,” I reply. “He saved many lives, including mine and Petr’s. We wouldn’t have made it out without his sacrifice.”

“I knew it.” His eyes sparkle with tears, but he’s proud. “A soldier wants a good death, eh?”

Well, fake marriage anyway.

To keep weapons out of the hands of terrorists, Mac has to secure a fiancée. A sweet, demure, compliant fiancée to serve as his arm candy for a few weeks while he completes the covert arms deal in Mexico. His sister claims to know just the woman, and sends her best friend to play the role.

“Sweet” and “demure” aren’t in Kelli Landers’s repertoire. A badass veterinarian who neuters big dogs and bigger men on a regular basis, she can’t wait to bring Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Detached to his knees. Her longtime crush on the commitment-phobe makes her plan to seduce him even sweeter.

Love wasn’t part of the plan, but the deeper Mac and Kelli fall into their ruse, the more danger they attract, until more than just their hearts are on the line…

I’ve been looking forward to this book since I finished Marine for Hire, and it did not disappoint. Tawna Fenske has a wry and slightly twisted sense of humor, and it shines through in her writing. Make me laugh enough, and minor plot issues won’t bother me as much 😉

Three words: wedding registry scene. It’s a must read.

Mac (MacArthur Patton–his siblings are Grant and Sheridan. Just in case you harbored any ill will toward your parents for the name they chose for you, this family is here to assure you it could be worse) is definitely my kind of hero. He only wears black, has his sunglasses specially made so he practically never has to take them off, and is as protective and alpha as they come. He’s so busy inside his head figuring out how to protect the universe from harm that he has no idea how to interact with his fellow humans on a normal, everyday level. Plus, he talks in covert-ops-speak all the time. Example:

“Ms. Landers? It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“Meet?” She raised an eyebrow at him as she tucked her small hand in his and gave a ladylike shake. “We’ve met at least a hundred times, Mac. You put a Band-Aid on my knee when I was ten and you were this big, cool high schooler whose kid sister’s friend tripped while chasing boys on the playground.”

“Of course,” he said, his brain offering up no recollection of the Band-Aid but doing an impressive job resisting the urge to let his eyes stray to her cleavage. “But we’ve never interacted under professional circumstances related to the negotiation of a covert business deal pertaining to international security.”

Seriously, I don’t know how any woman could resist this guy.

Kelli is a whole lot of fun. She’s a vet, and spends half of the book relieving feral cats of their “fuzz nuggets and lady biscuits” (it’s actually really amusing, believe it or not. And educational. I had no idea there were so many euphemisms for those particular body parts) when she’s not lusting after her fake fiance. She’s the type of heroine you just know would be a riot to hang out with. She’s had a crush on Mac for years (again, who wouldn’t?) and even though you know that pretending to be engaged to him will be a huge mistake on her part, you can’t blame her for a second.

Put those two together, and you’ve got one heck of a fake-engagement-for-the-good-of-international-security story. There’s no huge surprises plot or storywise, but that’s okay.

If you’re looking for a fun, flirty, and frothy read, give Fiancee for Hire a try. It’s a perfect summer read. The quirky characters and quick humor are the real standout here–parts of the suspense plot end up being just shy of silly and the end is unbelievably quick (how could two commitment-phobes possibly change their minds in such a short amount of pages?) but overall it’s really an engaging read.

Looking forward to the next in the series!

Release Day and Giveaway: BETWEEN THE SHEETS by Molly O’Keefe (Boys of Bishop #3)

Today is the release day for BETWEEN THE SHEETS by Molly O’Keefe (who just won the RITA for contemporary romance for her book CRAZY THING CALLED LOVE). This is the third book in the Boys of Bishop series, and I can’t wait to read it!
Review to come next month 🙂

Book Summary:

Perfect for readers of Susan Mallery and Rachel Gibson, Between the Sheets is Molly O’Keefe’s final book in the Boys of Bishop trilogy, featuring a sizzling romance between a sexy motorcycle bad boy and the girl next door who can’t resist him.

After years of running, Wyatt Svenson has now parked himself in Bishop, Arkansas, trying to do the right thing and parent a son he didn’t even know he had until recently. Over six feet tall and packed with muscles and power, Ty likes to get his hands dirty, fixing his motorcycle at night and keeping his mind away from the mistakes he’s made. Then his pretty neighbor shows up on his driveway, doesn’t bother to introduce herself, and complains about the noise. First impression? She should loosen up. Funny that she turns out to be his son’s elementary school art teacher—and the only one willing to help his troubled boy. Ty needs her. In more ways than one.

Though Shelby Monroe is safe in her structured life, she is drawn to Ty’s bad-boy edge and rugged sexuality. What if she just lets it all go: her worries about her mother, her fear of heartbreak, and her tight self control? What if she grabs Ty and takes a ride on the wild side? “What if” becomes reality—intense, exhilarating . . . and addictive. But Ty wants more than a secret affair. He wants it all with Shelby. But will she take a chance and open her heart? Ty is determined to convince Shelby to take the biggest risk of her life: on him.
