The perfect summer escape?

Professional dog-walker Felicity Knight loves everything about New York…until her ex-husband starts working at her local vet clinic. She hasn’t seen Seth Carlyle in ten years, but one glimpse of him–too gorgeous, and still too good for her–and Fliss’s heart hurts like their whirlwind marriage ended yesterday. So when her grandmother in the Hamptons needs help for the summer, it seems the ideal way to escape her past.

Their relationship might have lasted only a few scorching months, but vet Seth knows Fliss–if she’s run away to the Hamptons, it’s because she still feels their connection and it terrifies her. He let her go once before, when he didn’t know any better, but not this summer! With the help of his adorable dog, Lulu, and a sprinkling of beachside magic, Seth is determined to make Fliss see that he’s never stopped loving her…

Sarah Morgan delights with more love and laughter in her acclaimed series From Manhattan with Love, which Publishers Weekly calls “engaging…a classic sweep-you-off-your-feet romantic experience.”

Review:

Loved!

Okay, so Fliss did get on my nerves a bit–her inability to see herself and her relationships as they truly were was aggravating. Her reasons for this were absolutely understandable, which is why I stuck with her, but still…aggravating. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to hug her or shake her more. Her HEA, though? Totally earned.

And Seth…Seth. He cooks. He’s good with animals. And especially once the fear of (not going to say who here, that would give it away) someone is put into him, he absolutely sees Fliss for who she is and gives her that one last chance that they both need.

Le sigh. Pretty sure this is my favorite of the series so far…although I somehow missed Daniel’s book, something I plan to remedy ASAP 😉

Harriet’s next–can’t wait!

Excerpt:

“Do you have any idea in that gorgeous head of yours how difficult it’s going to be for us to just be friends?” River pushes a stray hair from my face, looking directly in my eyes.

He walks up to me and stands entirely too close.

I can smell him and feel his warm breath against my face

River’s voice gets low, and he wipes at my eyes with the pads of his fingers. “I keep trying to force myself to have feelings for Willow, but I think it’s impossible.”

“Why?” I ask between sobs.

“Do you really want to know why, Kate?”

“Yes, tell me.”

River presses the hard lines of his body into mine and puts his hands on my face. “It’s really simple. It’s because she isn’t you.” River stares into my eyes and slowly inches his lips to mine. There’s so much want behind it, deep and powerful, as if he’s trying to possess me—own me. It’s like this every time River kisses me.

Before I know it. River’s face is in my hair as he whispers in my ear. “I want to touch you so bad.” I shiver at the feel of his warm breath smelling of soda and River.

“You can’t,” I say under my breath. “Please stop. They’re going to see.”

“You’re so close to me. I miss you.” His hand moves back up my leg.

My heart melts. I miss him too, and all I want to do is be close to him. I can’t let him know I agree, though. “I’m sorry,” I whisper, and I shift my legs so they are on top of Lane’s.

Before I can say anything, he puts his arms around me, planting his lips so harshly to mine I can barely register what’s happening.

The kiss is powerful. Filled with urgency and desire.

Far be it for me to stop him now, because I’m hungry for it. I want this closeness with him, and all of the resolve I’ve had built up is suddenly knocked down with one kiss. Lips to lips, tongue to tongue, all I can breathe is River.

Even River McEwan is upset with her, and that’s the deepest blow of all. River was Willow’s boyfriend, but the three of them—Kate, Willow, and River—have been friends since childhood.

When a professor assigns Kate and River to be partners in a joint research project, Kate hopes it’s a chance to tear down the barrier between them, but instead faces an even bigger challenge. As she and River meet over the school project, their renewed friendship flares into something more.

For Joy’s Sake
(Where Secrets Are Safe #12)

by Tara Taylor Quinn
Adult Contemporary Romance
Mass Market Paperback & ebook, 384 pages

There’s something about Julie

Hunter Rafferty is committed to two things: his bachelor lifestyle and his career as an event planner. But working with Julie Fairbanks on a fund-raising gala is quickly becoming the best part of his day. He can’t stop thinking about the mysterious beauty—despite her refusals to have dinner with him.

Everything changes when seven-year-old Joy comes to The Lemonade Stand, a shelter for victims of abuse. To help Joy overcome her trauma and the mystery surrounding it, Hunter and Julie push beyond their boundaries, confronting their own past pain…and feelings for each other.

Review:

Oh, this series!

Once again Ms. Quinn has given us a story that is intense–all three main characters: Julie, Hunter, and little Joy–have significant issues that are keeping them back in some way so that they need to work through to get their lives back. Though Hunter has been attracted to Julie since before the book’s beginning, the romance is very much a secondary part of the story–Julie’s earlier trauma, combined with Hunter’s issues with his own self worth, mean that neither of them is ready for a full romantic relationship for much of the book. Watching all three characters grow and heal, though, definitely gives us enough story that we don’t mind romance taking a bit of a back seat. The incorporation of Julie’s children’s books into the healing that all three do adds to the magic of the story–absolutely loved it!

For Joy’s Sake would work okay as a standalone, though if you’ve read Julie’s brother Colin’s book (Love by Association) you’ll already know and love Julie–honestly, though, it doesn’t take long for you to be 100% in her corner even if this book is your introduction to her 🙂

A Conversation with Patty Blount, Author of THE WAY IT HURTS (with a giveaway!)

Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, Patty!

Thank you so much for hosting me!

What 5 things should readers know about you?

Well, I love books – reading them, writing them, collecting them, lending them. I love to talk about books. I am drawn to strong, feisty characters who do what has to be done, even when it hurts. I’m a huge supporter of women’s rights and honestly, don’t understand why everybody isn’t. Our country was founded on the principle of liberty and justice for all, so why is this such a difficult concept to practice? I just don’t understand. I have two children, both sons, who tell me they’re proud of me and that’s everything to me. Oh, I love chocolate – like love it the way a country singer loves his truck. I’d write songs about it if I could sing.

Songs about chocolate? I’d go for that! 😉

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

If you open the cover of the book and read the dedication, you’ll understand this. Kimberly Sabatini, author of TOUCHING THE SURFACE, is an online friend I’ve never met in person. But we connected in a real way – first on Twitter, and then on the YA Outside the Lines blog. There’d been a number of public debacles involving social justice and people deleting their accounts after being called out for whatever comment they’d made that incited the public. Kimberly and I found ourselves on the same side of an issue – that calling out somebody online can way too easily cross over into harrassment. I decided to write a story in which call out culture and a viral tweet play a significant role after our discussions.

Nice!

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I’ve been writing all of my life. I think writing is a natural progression from loving to read. Reading is my superpower. I can read entire novels in a matter of hours. I owe that to my mother, who taught me to read before I began school. As a shy and quiet kid, books became my friends, my escape, even my tutors. I never thought I had any real talent at it, tough. It wasn’t until a dare from my oldest son, who was in seventh grade at the time, that I tried to do it professionally.

A dare, huh? Interesting (and obviously effective) motivation!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

I’m working on a companion book to Some Boys called Someone I Used to Know. Like Some Boys, this novel deals with rape and rape culture. Unlike Some Boys, this story focuses on how surviving a sexual assault impacts an entire family.

Sounds like a fantastic read—can’t wait!

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

I’m reading Robyn Carr’s Virgin River series. I’m about 12 books into the series so far and I find myself approaching circumstances in my life as if Jack or Mel Sheridan might walk in at any moment. I kind of wish Preacher would show up and cook for me. I’m truly immersed in the small mountain town Robyn’s created. The characters are larger than life, the love stories incredibly satisfying and the whole inter-connectedness of it all just addictive.

I love it when you can just immerse yourself into a fictional world like that!

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

Oh, what a great question. I should know this, since Twitter plays a big role in this story.

“Feelin’ so much pain, but the words still come out wrong. It can’t get worse; this is the way it hurts” @RIDE_OUT Are you #KrisVsEli?

Perfect! Thanks so much, Patty!

About Patty Blount:

Native New Yorker Patty Blount is the award-winning author of several critically acclaimed internet issues novels for teens as well as a few adult contemporary romances. She is inspired to write by such greats as Judy Blume, JK Rowling, and Gayle Forman. In fact, Judy Blume is the reason Patty elected to write under her real name…so she’d appear on shelves next to her idol. Patty adores writing; she’s written everything from technical manuals to song lyrics (see THE WAY IT HURTS, coming August 2017). Patty wants you to know she loves chocolate…really, really loves chocolate.

When not crushing on actors Gilles Marini or Sam Heughan, Patty can be found sitting in traffic somewhere on the Long Island Expressway, listening to audio books or talking wildly to herself about plots and characters. Prone to falling madly in love with fictional characters, Patty suffers frequent broken hearts when they all invariably prefer the heroine to her… go figure. When she’s not writing, Patty loves to watch bad sci-fi movies and live tweet the hilarity, and scour Pinterest for ideas on awesome bookcases. Patty lives on Long Island with her family in a house that, sadly, lacks bookcases.

Synopsis:

There may be two sides to every story, but sometimes there’s only one way to set things right…

Music is Elijah’s life. His band plays loud and hard, and he’ll do anything to get them a big break. He needs that success to help take care of his sister, who has special needs. So he’d rather be practicing when his friends drag him to a musical in the next town…until the lead starts to sing.

Kristen dreams of a career on stage like her grandmother’s. She knows she needs an edge to get into a competitive theater program–and being the star in her high school musical isn’t going to cut it. The applause and the attention only encourage her to work harder.

Elijah can’t take his eyes off of Kristen’s performance, and snaps a photo of her in costume that he posts online with a comment that everybody misunderstands. It goes viral. Suddenly, Elijah and Kristen are in a new spotlight as the online backlash spins out of control. And the consequences are bigger than they both could have ever imagined because these threats don’t stay online…they follow them into real life.

Excerpt:

Elijah took my hands. “Okay, look. Maybe you’re right. Maybe these people are taking this whole battle thing way too seriously. If you’re scared, then we’ll stop. No more posts except for appearance information.”

“So no more battle of the sexes, no more make Kris scream?”

He held up his hand. “Swear to God.”

“Okay.” I sighed in relief. “You’d really do that?”

He leaned closer and repeated the vow. “I promise, Kris.”

And just like that, I forgot why I was mad at him. I couldn’t talk, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t even blink because I was afraid he’d let go. This was the part of him I adored. I clung to him for a long moment, and when his gaze drifted to my mouth, I wondered if—hoped—prayed—he’d finally kiss me.

And then, Etta’s voice suddenly spoke inside my head. “Well, my God, darling, it’s the twenty-first century. What on earth are you waiting for? You can kiss him.”

I could. Yes. Yes, I could just lift my head and lean in and kiss Elijah Hamilton like it was a normal, ordinary occurrence.

Right. Like kissing Elijah Hamilton would ever be ordinary?

I’d watched him kiss that girl at the mall and was sure I’d memorized all the steps in his routine. He’d move in, grip my face between his hands, run his thumb along my jaw, and finally, glide his arm down around my body, pulling me against his own, all the while, peeking through his lashes to see if I enjoyed it.

I wasn’t sure when I decided—even what made me decide. I just touched my lips to his and waited.

It took a second or two. But then there was a sudden, tiny squeak from him, and I felt the pulse in his wrist leap under my fingertips.

And then, his hands were in my hair, angling my head just the way he liked it, his tongue brushing against mine, so soft it might have been my imagination…except imaginary kisses were never so intense. He kissed me like I was a song he wrote, lips wrapped around every word until it hummed with hidden meaning and promise, and his hands held me the way they held his guitar—like the music would stop if he let me go.

The Third Kiss (Love’s Mortal Coil #1)
by Kat Colmer
Publication Date: August 7, 2017
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Love curses don’t exist. At least that’s what Jonas, master of the meaningless hookup, tells himself when a letter warns him he’s an Eros Guardian cursed to endure a test of true love or forever be alone. His levelheaded longtime friend Cora figures it’s a revenge prank by an ex. The way Jonas stamps each girlfriend with a weeklong use-by date, it serves him right.

But when an impulsive kiss between the two friends reveals potential for more, Cora becomes the target of the Groth Maar: demons sent to wipe out the Eros Guardian line. And suddenly the curse becomes dangerously real.

Breaking the curse means Jonas’s biggest challenge yet. Failure guarantees Cora’s death. But success may cost him his own life…and the loss of his carefully guarded heart to the one girl far too sensible to fall for him.

Excerpt:

Jonas snorted. “The guy has a backyard designed to charm girls out of their underwear.”

Did he seriously just say that? When he himself went off with— Unbelievable! I grabbed the rough wood of the gazebo railing so I didn’t lash out with more than my words.

“And you’d know all about that, now, wouldn’t you?”

His jaw clenched even as a wince tightened the line of his lips. “I don’t like him.”

“You don’t know him.”

“Neither do you.” He widened his stance and crossed his arms. “A few online chats don’t exactly mean much when it comes to getting to know someone.”

My fingernails dug into the railing, the wood biting into my skin. “Nice. So all our conversations while I was in Manhattan were meaningless, too, were they?”

“That’s different.” Jonas scowled under his balaclava of shadows. “We have history, a friendship. You hardly knew him before you left and haven’t seen the guy in over a year.”

He took a half step closer. “Ever heard of taking things slower?”

Breathe. Deep and steady, in and out. “Do you hear yourself? You telling me to take things slower?”

His hand twitched, like a gunfighter about to draw. “We’re talking about you, not me.”

“No, let’s talk about you. And how you need to butt out of my life.” Letting go of the safety of the railing, I took a step toward him. “I don’t go around judging how you change girlfriends more often than your social media updates so where do you get off telling me how fast or slow I should go?”

Jonas stilled. “I’m just trying to stop you from making a mistake.”

My jaw dropped. “What, with your track record? You’re the master of the meaningless hookup. You do not get to lecture me on making mistakes.”

Eyes locked on mine, his pulse punched out a frantic rhythm against the side of his throat. “A mistake for some isn’t necessarily one for others.”

Of all the patronizing— “Are you listening to the garbage coming out of your mouth or has all the bullshit clogged up your ears?” I pressed my clenched hands against my sides, fighting the urge to grab his headphones and show him exactly what I thought of his double standard.

“The guy is a player, Cora.”

I scoffed. “Not every guy operates the way you do.”

Jonas flinched but didn’t say anything.

“And even if he is, maybe that’s all I’m after.” I wasn’t, but it felt good to bait him.

His eyes narrowed, two glistening slits. “That’s not you.”

I edged closer still, my frame vibrating with anger. “How do you know? Maybe that night a year ago gave me a taste for short and uncomplicated.”

I felt more than saw something in him shift. Then a flash of lightning ripped the shadows from his face, leaving his expression exposed.

Shit.

The light disappeared. And with it the space between us.

Review:

The Third Kiss offers a different take on the idea of love curses; I found the biblical origins of the Love’s Mortal Coil curse compelling. It really made me wonder where Ms. Colmer came up with the idea; I bet there’s a story there! The curse and the universe in which it resides was well thought out and maintained. I really liked the voices of the two protagonists, Jonas and Cora, and Beth and Leo were strong secondary characters as well. The grownups of the book–Cora’s dad, Jonas’ aunt, even the professor–seemed a bit more disposable, though that’s often the case in YA books, so it didn’t bother me overmuch.

I am really interested in seeing where this series is going to go–will there be two books (I totally called the ending of this one; go, me!) or three? Or…more? And how soon will we have to wait to find out???

New Release and Giveaway! DRAGON REBEL by Ophelia Bell (Immortal Dragons #4)

Dragon Rebel
Ophelia Bell
(Immortal Dragons, #4)
Publication date: August 1st 2017
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

If Assana looked up the word “nymphomaniac” in the dictionary, she might expect to find her own image in place of the definition, especially after meeting the immortal red dragon, Gavra. The timing couldn’t be worse for her to discover the mate that Fate intended—the one she’d be willing to let go of her tightly bound hold on her deepest sexual desires for—the one who literally drives her mad with lust. Now that she needs her sanity more than anything to regain control of her race’s home from her own insane mother, she’s faced with the inconvenient desire to lose control and be that primal nymph she keeps locked inside.

Thank Gaia for Silas. The handsome young ursa male is blessed with magic that can calm the lust-filled madness threatening to consume Assana’s mind. She needs him more than ever now that she has no choice but to spend her days in close proximity to the dragon she desires more than anything… yet doesn’t dare touch lest she give in to that ancient, primal need all nymphaea are born with.

For red dragon Gavra, he can only put off having the beautiful nymph maiden for so long, or the ursa male who Fate has promised him. Once Assana’s crazy mother is out of the way, nothing will stop Gavra from claiming and marking them both as his.

EXCERPT:

“Well that was fun.”

Gavra spun around at the sound of the deep, familiar voice that had so recently been speaking inside his head. His brother stood in the center of his room, his arms crossed and a grim smile on his face.

“Aodh,” he said, unable to mask the utter relief he felt at seeing his white-haired brother whole and in the flesh. He pulled the other man into a fierce embrace that was returned in kind, releasing him when Aodh stiffened.

Gavra looked back in the direction of his brother’s gaze and saw Vrishti standing with an excited look about to breach the barrier into his room.

“No!” Aodh said. “Please stay where you are, love.”

“She wants to see you,” Gavra said. “Surely you won’t deny her a proper greeting.”

Aodh shook his head. “A proper greeting? She’s not ready, brother. Perhaps it’s fine for you and Silas to tangle before you’ve marked him. We can’t risk her reputation while she’s still learning about her kind.” Turning to Vrishti, he said, “After we’ve settled these issues with the Haven, love. I promise you no prison can keep me from you then.”

Vrishti dropped the hand she had been about to push past the barrier and nodded. Her eyes grew glassy and she took a shaky breath. “I’ll be ready for you, I promise,” she said. “I can’t stand to see you trapped like this… I’m sorry. Be safe. Keep him safe…” She directed the last comment to Gavra and Assana, who both nodded.

Gavra gave Assana a perplexed look. “Why didn’t you drift into the room with him?”

Assana carefully avoided his gaze as she hugged Vrishti farewell and watched the other female go, then she glanced at Silas, a look of pure gratitude on her lovely face. The big ursa male moved closer to her, wrapped an arm around her and held her. Gavra’s chest felt leaden at the way the pair looked at each other – like they belonged in each other’s arms. They were kindred elements, both Gaia’s children, and made sense together more than Gavra himself made sense with either of them. The way he and Silas crashed together with such fiery, explosive force felt right to him, but it was not easy, or pretty – it was passionate, volatile, and destructive.

“He calms my primal spirit,” Assana said softly. “I’m afraid to come closer to you because you only make the madness claw at my mind more. I allowed Aodh to take control of his own drift once he promised to go where I asked. I couldn’t be in the same room with you for fear of losing control. I’m sorry, Gavra… I can’t let myself lose control, not when my entire home, my family’s well being is at stake. Please understand.”

He wanted to roar in protest, to breathe flames at the barrier and pull her inside, show her how right it would be to let go and be her true self – the wild nymph he sensed glimmers of beneath the surface whenever their eyes met. The insatiable creature who haunted his dreams, responding to his heat so perfectly.

Aodh’s hand rested on his shoulder and gave him a comforting squeeze.

Gavra swallowed the molten lump in his throat and nodded. Finding his voice, he said, “I want you wild, Assana. The first time I’m inside you, you can be damn sure control will be the last thing on anyone’s minds.”

Silas tightened his hold on Assana protectively, though his aura flared bright red in response to Gavra’s promise. She closed her eyes and took a long, slow breath as though fortifying herself before opening her eyes.

Her hypnotic, whirlpool gaze met his through the barrier. “I want that, too. To share my primal essence with you both, to taste yours when we’re thrice melded and feel your heat deep inside my mind. To feel you etch your mark on my skin. Gaia save me, I would take that now, but I can’t risk losing myself to that need. There is too much at stake. Please understand… I need Silas to keep my own nymphaea madness in check, but I promise you the first time you’re inside me will be the first time my quim is filled by any male’s seed.”

Gavra groaned at the promise, forcing himself to pull his gaze away from her or else risk burning down the entire Sanctuary to get to her.

“It looks like Silas is going to have his hands full sating us both separately then,” he said, staring heatedly at the big ursa male. “Can you handle that?”

Silas gave him a lazy smile. “I welcome it.”

Book Blitz and Giveaway! POWER PLAY by Sophia Henry (Pilots Hockey #2)

I love this series! I reviewed POWER PLAY here.

Power Play
Sophia Henry
(Pilots Hockey #2)
Publication date: February 16th 2016
Genres: New Adult, Romance

In Sophia Henry’s blistering follow-up to Delayed Penalty, hailed as “sexy, fun, and full of angst” by L. P. Dover, a good girl and a hockey hunk face off against expectations—and this match is guaranteed to see plenty of action.

Beneath her innocent facade, Gabriella Bertucci has her reasons to be standoffish with guys. Especially guys like Landon Taylor, a star defenseman on the minor-league Detroit Pilots and the object of a serious crush since he first walked into her family’s market. But when Landon comes through for her in a moment of crisis, Gaby starts to wonder if there might be more to Landon than hard muscles and fast skates.

Landon isn’t afraid of telling Gaby that he’s got it for her bad. The problem is, she seems unwilling to believe it. And though Landon enjoys his reputation as a cool-headed athlete, he hates losing—both on the rink and off. It’s his competitiveness that makes him so damn good at what he does . . . but it also makes him just a little bit complicated.

One minute Gaby’s tempted to give in; the next, she’s getting cold feet. How can she trust a guy who’s destined for bigger and better things to stick around? Then again, when Landon pulls her close with those powerful arms, the only thing that matters is right now.

EXCERPT:

Rule One: There’s no such thing as love at first sight.

Lust at first sight, sure, but not love. Don’t get me wrong. I love love. I love love so much, I’ve dressed up as Cupid for Halloween. But real love takes time.

Just some unsolicited advice from Gabriella Bertucci, Queen of Having It All Figured Out, except my own life, of course. It’s easy to give advice and boast lofty ideals when no one pays attention to you.

“Hey!”

I knew the voice, but I had to do a double take after looking up from the “Lions and Tigers and Red Wings, oh MI” T-shirt I’d been folding. “You got your haircut.”

Landon Taylor ran a hand over his dark blond faux-hawk and grinned. “Yeah. It was time to lose the mop top.”

“Looks nice.” I grabbed another shirt out of the cardboard box filled with our most recent shipment of T-shirts from Totally Detroit, a local screen printer. If I held the shirt up and folded it in front of my face, Landon might not notice my annoying habit of hyperventilating whenever I talked to him.

Though Landon and his family had been clients at my family’s produce stores for years, my palms still broke out in a sweat whenever he walked through the door.

“Do you guys have any more of the Tigers Legos?” Landon asked as he dug through a tiny box of toys next to the register. “My brothers are obsessed with them.”

“Yeah, I know. Your mom was in here last week and bought us out.”

“Damn.” His dark blond eyebrows knit in defeat and he turned his attention to a rack of kids’ T-shirts.

“You could buy him an actual tiger,” I suggest.

“Animal or baseball player?” Landon glanced up to shoot me a wink, then resumed pushing the hangers quickly aside, obviously not impressed with our selection.

I grabbed a stuffed tiger with the state of Michigan embroidered in pink across its chest from a nearby table and threw it at Landon. “RAWWR!” It bounced off his freshly shorn head and landed on the floor.

“Geez, Gaby! You’ve gotta tell a guy when you throw a damn tiger at him.”

“Now I see why you play hockey,” I joked before rushing behind the register to help another customer. He couldn’t retaliate while I rang up someone’s purchase, but I’d have to remember to take cover after.

The Taylor family had shopped at Eastern Market, Detroit’s historic, outdoor public market, religiously every Saturday morning for as long as I can recall. They always bought a bushel of apples from our stand and ate them as they wove through the aisles under the covered sheds. Once they would finish browsing, they would come back and load their old red wagon with enough produce to last the week.

That was back when Bertucci Produce was just a small, but thriving, stand in Shed One at Eastern Market. Years before my mom and dad decided they wanted to open 313 Artisans, the small store I currently run, which began as a way to feature local artists as well as my mom’s own artistic creations.

This was back when Landon was just a kid strolling through the streets in one of Detroit’s oldest communities, not Landon Taylor superstar defenseman for the Detroit Pilots. Detroit’s next NHL-bound player.

Rule Two: Real love is between two people. If it’s one-sided, it’s just infatuation; a crush.

Which is why I couldn’t call my feelings for Landon Taylor love. Sure, my forehead broke out in a cold sweat and my heart pumped and thumped like a rock ’n’ roll drumbeat every time I watched him walk through the door. But since I didn’t seem to have the same effect on him, it couldn’t be love.

In defense of my hormonally charged reaction, every time I saw him now he looked like a fitness model who’d just left a photo shoot. Today, for instance, a blue Detroit Pilots Under Armor shirt skimmed the curves of his chiseled chest, and black basketball shorts swished against his muscular thighs. I even knew he had on little white ankle socks inside his gray and blue Brooks running shoes.

Because I’m that obsessed observant.

New Release and Giveaway! RETURN TO HEARTLAND by Jacquie Gee (Heartland Cove #1)

Return to Heartland
Jacquie Gee
Publication date: July 25th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Will the girl save Heartland, or will Heartland save the girl?

Lingerie and cupcakes have Becca Lane living the sweet life in New York City—until the call that sends her home. Heartland Cove may sound endearing, but in essence it’s a small, nosey, rural town, in the middle of backwoods New Brunswick—a place Becca couldn’t wait to leave. She arrives to find her mother acting strange, the family business in peril, and the town in dire straits. What to save first? Worst of all, Jebson Jefferies, Becca’s former fiancé—and a man she could happily never see again—has been elected mayor and is threatening to destroy the future of Heartland, along with Becca’s family legacy—and all she stands to inherit.

Not that she ever wanted it. It’s…complicated.

Trent Nash, a former football star, is a displaced Aussie with a big secret. He has escaped to small-town Heartland Cove to start a new life and is determined to remain incognito. He thinks he’s just about pulled it off when, a sassy redhead walks through his door of his struggling establishment…and right into his heart.

As she becomes embroiled in a crusade bigger than she bargained for, the beautiful, bronzed stranger comes to her aid. Will she be able to put aside her dislike for him long enough to accept his help to save Heartland Cove, or will he and Heartland Cove become Becca’s savior? Perhaps deep down, what really needs rescuing here, has less to do with Heartland, and more to do with Becca’s heart.

Return to Heartland is the first in a series of sweet, (no sex on the page), contemporary romances set in Heartland Cove.

EXCERPT:

Dropping my bags, I press my hands to the sides of my face and peer in through the stained-glass in the front door. The same stained-glass that has graced the front door of my family’s home for over a century now. Homestead. Not a—whatever this Green Grub thing is supposed to be.

Is that a cappuccino maker, I see? Mom doesn’t own a cappuccino maker.

I scan the room, my vision slightly skewed because over peering through the stained-glass.

No sign of Mom anywhere.

I don’t get it. Wouldn’t she have told me if she’d moved house? My conversation with Mrs. Peterson comes to mind. I whirl around, unnerved, and stare out at the town. They didn’t have her put away, or something, did they? Surely to goodness, Aunt Penny would have called if that happened. My blood threads with panic. No, she’s here. She’s got to be here.

Unless… unless this is how they were planning to tell me. Maybe that’s why they summoned me here. To break the news. My mouth goes dry.
Nonsense, they wouldn’t be that callous.

I run sweaty palms down the sides of my skirt. Whatever’s happened, I’m gonna find out.

I pick up my bags and charge on through the door— the heavy, ornately carved Victorian wood door of the home where I was raised, and where my mother still lives, according to the address on her mail. Or at least last Christmas. The door slams shut behind me, giving my spine a jolt.

Customer warning bells tinkle overhead that look suspiciously like the ones from my Mom’s store across the way.

“Oh, hey… hi!” A head pops up from behind a serving counter. A head attached to a very a nice-looking face, and I neck I sense I should be throttling. I repeat, there is a freaking bar-slash-serving-counter sitting smack dab in the middle of my mother’s formal parlor! And I suspect he’s the culprit that put it there. “Can I help you?” he says, and his eyes sparkle—a stunning shade of emerald green, rimmed by a thick set of dark eyelashes. Like that improves things. They’re set behind a sexy set of lenses. Clearly, he’s one of those guys who looks even better with glasses on. You know, the kind. Where the glasses just add to the already amazing features of his face. He’s sexy enough on his own, but the glasses take it over the top. Not that any of that matters right now. Neither does the fact that he has a killer accent—which, if my language sense serves me, I believe is Australian. Though it could be South African. No, definitely Australian. Again, not that it matters.

“Oh, jeez, where are my manners.” All six-feet whatever of him shoots forward, yanking an arborite chair out from under an arborite table, offering me a place to sit. In my own living room!

I glare down at the atrocity gracing my Mother’s parlor, then scowl up. “Who are you? Why are you here?” Is that a ketchup stain on the brim of his hat?

“Hello to you too,” he says.

“Where is she?” I look around, darting doorway to doorway.

He squints. “I’m sorry, were you supposed to meet someone?” He screws up his face.

“No, I’m not meeting someone here. I live here. Lived here. Now, where is she?” I drop my bags and kick off my shoes—cause, you know, habit.

“Are you always this friendly when you meet someone?” The stranger glares.

“Only when I arrive home to find a dazed-looking cook standing in my Mom’s formal living room.”

His stunning eyes flash. “Aah!” He finally clues in. “Oh, my gosh. That’s who you are! You must be, Becca!” He lunges forward, sticking out a hand for me to shake. I don’t take it. “Oh, excuse me.” He retracts his hand, wipes it off on the front of his grimy apron and sticks it out again, like that was the problem. “I’ve heard so much about you.” He breaks into an eye-squishing grin.

“Funny?” I cross my arms. “I haven’t heard a thing about you.”

I let his hand hang out between us like a cold, dead fish, ’cause you know, I don’t like him.

If I were forced to classifying him, say for my friend Tia or something, I’d go with the ‘ruggedly hipster urbanite’, which makes me wonder why he’s here, in the middle of backwoods New Brunswick, posing as a short order cook. He’s sports one of those scruffy beards that looks like he only half bothers to shave, and his curly hair is a mess under that baseball cap worn backward on his head. Gawd, that cap is disgustingly grimy. I’ve never understood why do men go for that look? I mean, sure, they don’t have to shave, but still, women might want to kiss them or run their hands through their hair. Have they ever considered that?

Not that I want to kiss this one or anything. It’s just an observation.

“Perhaps I could get you a drink or something?” He clasps his hands together.

“Perhaps not.” I poker-smile back at him.

My gaze runs up his muscled frame, along his broad, thick shoulders, and back onto his flawless face. Gosh, didn’t the buff-spirits give this one everything? But it’s all ruined when he opens his mouth. A bit of a smart-arse, isn’t he? “How about you tell me who you are, and why you’re here, and what you’ve done with my mother?” I growl, despite how good-looking he is.

“Your mother hasn’t told you yet?”

“Does it look like my mother’s told me?” I blink.

“Aaah…I’m Trent.” He tries to offer me his hand again, but I still don’t shake it. “I bought the place from your mom about a year back.”

“You what?” Now, I’m really not shaking his hand. I hope my voice didn’t just shriek as loud outside my head as it did inside. A year ago? I know I didn’t make it home for Christmas the past few years, but—

Jacquie Gee is the alias of Jacqueline Garlick. Maybe you’ve read her?

We are one and the same. Two faces of one author with very different writing styles. That way, I keep readers happy by keeping my writing passions separated.

On a personal note, I love to talk… strange for a writer, I know, but I do. I’m told I can be pretty funny, though, my kids see things in a different light. I love to write romances with a strong, sassy, heroines, and scrumptiously, gorgeous leading men. I write sweet romance surrounded by chocolate and an overweight sheltie. Neither of which are related. And there are always with fresh flowers in the room. Raised in a small town in the country myself, I like writing about them best. I mean, who doesn’t love a small-town? Enough about me, what about you?

Review:

The second book in Ms. Weber’s Team Poseidon series did not disappoint! This one follows “Rembrandt” (aka Elijah Prescott) as he and the Poseidon team continue to try to find the missing traitor who eluded them in the last book. Elijah’s also struggling with his future–is it still in the military? as a part of the Team? or does he have a second chance with his ex, the only woman he ever loved? Does making one of these choices exclude the others?

I loved Ava–she truly is a kick butt heroine! Fingers crossed that we’ll see more of her and Elijah in the next book (which is Nic’s; whose story I do want to hear–but what about Jared and Andi??? You’re killing me here, Ms. Weber…and now I want to know more about Ava’s BFF Chloe and her story too, darn you) just as we got a bit more Harper and Diego in this one 🙂

Call to Engage would work okay as a standalone if needed–the pertinent details that you need to know from the first book are explained–but everything’s going to work better all around if you know the whole story. Plus, it’d be impossible to know just a little about these characters and not want to know all–so you might as well put the whole series on your TBR and save yourself the trouble 😉

Rating: 4 stars / B+
