Time is running out and the enemy is at the gate.

Adam Hicks may be the rookie at Safeguard, but he’s no novice in the field. Retired from active duty after multiple tours and back fresh from a brief rest in New Zealand, he’s itching to return to action. But the challenge he hoped for arrives in an unexpected form: his sexy yet stern new partner.

The last thing Victoria Ash wants is to work with the new guy—especially one as gorgeous as Adam. His relaxed attitude about their first “easy” assignment together—setting up a private home defense network for a reclusive client—doesn’t impress her. Easy usually means trouble. She’s proved right when Adam discovers that the multiple incursions on the physical and cyber security systems aren’t just glitches. They’re under attack…and there’s a traitor in their midst.

As tension mounts, so does the attraction between Victoria and Adam. They must protect their client and the research he’s desperately trying to keep secret. Working together, they have to find the mole before their defense measures, in the fortress and online, are compromised and the deadly secrets they’ve sworn to protect are revealed.

Excerpt from FINDING HIS MARK by Piper J. Drake:

Michael nodded, then took Sushar’s hand from his elbow and instead placed his hand on her lower back. The heat of his palm warmed her skin through the gauze of her delicate cover. “Well, I took our discussion from yesterday to heart. I’d like you to meet Su. She’s an old friend who agreed to join me even though I invited her last minute.”

“Very kind of you.” The man’s gaze settled on Sushar and pierced right through her, assessing.

“I was surprised.” She decided concise and honest was best with this man. “But if Michael called, it was important to him.”

Which was absolute truth.

The man’s eyebrow lifted in response to her statement and the corner of his mouth twitched in a hint of a smile. “Michael, you continue to impress me.”

Michael chuckled. He was comfortable with this man. “You recommended I establish a life, a real one beyond my work. Su might be a past acquaintance, but she’s also the only part of my history worth bringing back into my life now.”

Her heart skipped and stuttered, almost stopped. She knew all his tells. Either he’d become a much better liar over the years or he meant what he’d said.

Michael’s boss truly smiled then, the laugh lines creasing an otherwise serious face. “Ben Ward. You are very welcome here.”

He extended his right hand.

Sushar took it and gave him a firm handshake. “Sushar Sakda. Thank you. Please call me Su.”

Michael turned her to introduce her to the others in Ben’s close circle of trusted advisors. Those men had waited for Ben to welcome her, and she noticed only a few of them introduced their ladies. Wives were given introductions. The others were very possibly temporary companions or perhaps mistresses.

It’d been significant, then, for Michael to introduce her to Ben. It mattered in this group of people. The question was, had it mattered as much to Michael as he’d implied?

She shouldn’t wonder, but she did.

Excerpt:

Between one moment and the next, he was right there next to her, kneeling so they were face to face. She let out the air in her lungs in a rush, not sure of what she wanted to do or what he was planning to do. She parted her lips but didn’t say anything, didn’t want to put another question out there for him to address before he answered the one she really wanted to know.

Because she was hoping he was here for her—not his childhood friend—but for the very adult version of her who’d been waiting for him all this time.

Faster than she could react, his lips caught hers. The contact rushed through her in a lightning shot of surprise. Years of bottled-up frustration bubbled up and she leaned into him with a soft gasp.

And then he pulled back and she was left trying to catch her breath.

Slowly, carefully, he slid his arms around her back and under her knees. He cradled her against his chest and tucked her head under his chin. Circled as she was in his embrace, he held her close. He pressed his lips against her hair.

“That was too close yesterday, Sophie.” His voice was low, gruff, and almost cracked with emotion. “The thought of losing you just about killed me.”

Review:

I love this series!

Finally we have Brandon and Sophie’s story–I feel like we’ve been waiting forever for it. Totally worth it, though. 😉 Brandon and Sophie has a past–they’ve known each other since they were children, and were each others’ firsts–until Brandon left for the military after graduation without a word to Sophie before he left.

Now it’s years later, he’s back and has started Hope’s Crossing Kennels, and Sophie’s made herself a part of the business since the start as part time accountant and weekend baker of treats. And as always, piner-after-of-Brandon, who’s got her firmly in the friend zone…except in his thoughts, which are a little less friendly and a little more x-rated.

But suddenly Sophie’s in danger–is it Brandon’s fault? Or has something in her life triggered it?–and Brandon and his latest project, German Shepherd Hadyn, are on the job, determined to keep her safe. Can he keep his distance and safe her life? (Of course not! What would be the fun in that?)

Romantic suspense, hot ex-military guys, dogs, and this time, a cat–really, it’s like Christmas has come early!

Now that all three of the men of Hope’s Crossing Kennels have found their HEAs, here’s hoping Ms. Drake has a new and even more exciting series in store for us 🙂

Excerpt:

Alex’s hand came up slowly to cradle the side of her face, encouraging her to tilt her head, and she did. He deepened the kiss then, his tongue running across her lips and coaxing them to open for him. She opened with a sigh, and his tongue swept into her mouth, gently tasting. She kissed him back in return, leaning into him until she had one hand braced against his hard chest.

A needy moan escaped her, and he responded in kind. When he lifted his mouth from hers, she almost tipped into him, her knees not holding her upright anymore and her head spinning. Wow.

She took not one, but several long breaths to clear her head, looking down at a black and tan face staring up at her with soulful, dark eyes. Souze wasn’t shy about watching, apparently.

The thought brought her the rest of the way to her senses, because weird. Yeah. Weird.

She took a step back, and Alex let her. He’d done that since the beginning. Letting her go if she wanted. So why was it so hard to leave now even if she kept saying she should?

“Thank you,” she told him, not looking up into his eyes.

“But?” Alex’s voice came cool, deep, and so sexy it just wasn’t fair.

“But I should go. Especially because this is obviously not a professional thing now.”

“No. But none of your previous employers particularly cared if you left, did they?” He sounded reasonable. “Did they bother to try to check on you?”

“Not that I know of.” She said it slowly. She’d had her phone with her, and she’d been checking her e-mail. Both big mistakes, she knew now. But she’d been paid under the table and they didn’t really have a way to contact her after she disappeared.

“I think that’s a little odd.” Rojas lifted his hand, giving her plenty of time to avoid him, and brushed her hair back from her face. “Maybe this time, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone care about whether you disappear.”

LOVE IS AN ACT OF BRAVERY…

Retired Navy SEAL Alex Rojas is putting his life back together, one piece at a time. Being a single dad to his young daughter and working at Hope’s Crossing Kennels to help rehab a former guard dog, he struggles every day to control his PTSD. But when Elisa Hall shows up, on the run and way too cautious, she unleashes his every protective instinct.

EXCERPT:

Beautiful blue-gray eyes met his briefly before the woman dropped her own gaze to focus on someplace lower on his face, like his nose or mouth. Subtle. Most people would probably not even notice the way she avoided direct eye contact.

But then again, not many people made eye contact a challenge the way he and his colleagues did. It wasn’t on purpose, really; more of a common quirk in their personalities.

Funny, he hadn’t expected to see her again. Okay, maybe he’d been hoping to find her at Revolution MMA for those self-defense classes he’d recommended. But here she was. A weird tingle jolted through his chest.

This woman was about as non-aggressive as possible without cowering outright. Despite her upright posture, her hands hung at her sides in a loose, non-defensive position. Her left wrist was covered in a brace and it was easy to see she held something in her right hand. She was far enough back on the landing to easily drop down a step or two without having to back up more than a few inches.

But the mannerisms didn’t fit her energy, the straightness of her shoulders, or the set of her jaw. Whoever this woman was, she’d developed habits. She wasn’t a mouse by nature. He wouldn’t be as irritated to see these behaviors if these things came naturally to her.

Who had forced her to assume those mannerisms to survive?

“Mr. Rojas.” Her voice was steady.

Another sign of her being more than what she seemed, as far as he was concerned. The timbre was almost soothing, and he realized he’d balled his hands into fists. Well, shit. He let his hands loosen.

She presented the object she held in her right hand. “I think your daughter left this behind at the ER last night. I hope you don’t mind, but the logo for the kennels was on the inside label, so I googled the address.”

Slowly—because he didn’t want her to snatch her hand back—he took the glove from her. “Thanks.”

“The hospital lost and found was overflowing, and I wanted to make sure Boom got her glove back,” the woman continued, then bit her lip. “And I wanted to be sure to thank you.” Her cheeks took on a fascinating pale pink blush.

Caught by surprise, Rojas raised his eyebrows. “Me?”

Maybe his tone had been the right encouragement, because she looked up again, her gaze meeting his, and the chemistry shocked him right down to his toes, hitting every vital organ—including his balls—along the way.

Blue-gray, cool as a calm day out on the water, her gaze held his. “You were very kind last night, and I didn’t thank you then. I try to thank the kind people I meet. So thank you.”

Rojas cleared his throat. “You’re welcome.”

He didn’t know what else to say. He’d only given her some ice, a cup of coffee, and a card about the martial arts center. Boom had a good sense for people, and when she’d said the woman needed the referral for the self-defense classes, he’d been inclined to agree.

She broke their eye contact, and he felt the loss as if someone had broken the circuit on an electrical current. “I should be going now.”

“Wait.” He didn’t know what made him ask her to. But she paused, balanced on the balls of her feet at the edge of the landing. He was sure if he didn’t catch her now she’d be gone for good. “I didn’t get your name.”

“Oh.” She turned to face him. Another sign that she’d learned caution but she wasn’t afraid by nature. She was open. A people person. Or at least more of one than he was. “Elisa Hall.”

Review:

I am loving this series!

The combination of knowing Alex and his daughter Boom from the first book ( Extreme Honor ) and having read the first chapter of this book at the end of that one guaranteed that I was going to have to read this one ASAP. It didn’t disappoint–once I’d started, I was pretty much good for nothing else until I’d finished. The perils of reading well-written romantic suspense… 😉

Alex and Elisa had great chemistry together (which helps make up for the insta-lust at the beginning of the book), and the “stalker ex” storyline–especially when the ex is someone with power and influence–is always good for ratcheting up the suspense in a story. I loved that Alex’s perceptiveness clued him in almost immediately that Elisa had some major issues with trust and that she was probably on the run from someone or something, and that he was able to understand it and put her at ease. Souse, the German Shepherd dog that Alex had been trying to find a new job for, was one of my favorite secondary characters in the book, and I loved the purpose they do finally find for him.

And don’t even get me started on Boom. I love that kid.

The book’s ending is a bit rushed–the way in which Alex and Elisa are separated and the tie-in to an ongoing issue from the first book were both on the abrupt side and almost too convenient, and it’s not clear what Elisa is going to be doing with herself professionally by the book’s end (though presumably we can find out from Brandon and Sophie’s story, Absolute Trust )–combined, these are the main reasons for the overall four instead of four-and-a-half star rating that I would have given the first 80% of the story. Still, it was one heck of a ride, and once again seeing the characters from the next book here and that gosh darn teaser excerpt at the end has me all but salivating for the next book in the series.

Ultimate Courage can absolutely be read as a standalone, though the bit at the very end will make more sense if you’ve read David and Lyn’s story. Since Brandon’s won’t be out until December(!), though, there’s plenty of time to read them both. 🙂

DEADLY TESTIMONY
by Piper J. Drake
Series: Safeguard #2
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: May 9, 2016
Publisher: Carina Press

Synopsis:

The stakes have never been higher as an elite team member must outwit a dangerous killer and save the man she’s sworn to protect. The second installment of the exhilarating Safeguard series from Piper J. Drake.

Kyle Yeun didn’t start out bad and he doesn’t intend to end his life while on the wrong side of the law, either. His testimony to his former employer’s environmental misdeeds has earned him a protection detail compliments of the US government. But due to a dark international conspiracy Kyle was unaware of, his former employers have made ending his life a top priority. Realizing he needs more protection than the US Marshals can provide, he turns to Safeguard after seeing the beautiful, deadly Lizzy Scott in action.

One look at Kyle, and sniper Lizzy Scott knows this isn’t going to be an easy protection job. He’s arrogant, irritating and almost irresistible. Instead of being put off by her hardened attitude, Kyle seems to thrive off the challenge. And she’s slowly giving in to his charms.

After narrowly escaping the latest assassination attempt, Lizzy starts taking dangerous risks to keep him safe. But the last thing Kyle wants is another life ruined because of his actions. He found his redemption in Lizzy’s arms and he’ll risk everything to make sure they both make it out alive. As will she, even if it means walking away from him to keep him safe.

DT02

Excerpt:

Isabelle sighed. No wingman or cavalry coming to his aid. He needed help but it wasn’t forthcoming. This was not going to resolve in the next thirty seconds and that was all she was willing to wait. Besides, she couldn’t leave a person alone to face odds like these. She’d been on her own in these situations plenty of times and it’d never been fun.

“Gentlemen, get out of my way.”

Humor and interest sparked in the Asian man’s eyes. He understood English, apparently. Seattle being a major city for travelers, it was always good to note rather than assume a listener could understand the conversation. Especially if she might have to advise him to take action.

The hulking goon who’d originally spoken to her turned then. “What did you say?”

Maybe the English language, or conversation in general, wasn’t goon number one’s strong point.

“Get. Out. Of. My. Way.” She put some steel into her voice this time. No need to increase volume when intensity works better.

Beady eyes narrowed at her as goon number one flexed his thick fingers into a meaty fist and released them. Threat clear.

Ah, well. Intonation could work on people with more neurons firing inside their heads. She might not have a whole lot of stature going on at five foot four, but her new friend should’ve at least spared a moment to ponder that maybe a woman in a black suit with white dress shirt and an earbud hanging over her collar from a wire might mean something.

He was a thug dressed in a monkey suit.

She was a much higher pay grade.

Review:

I liked the role reversal on this one–heroine is the protection, hero is witness being protected–but the heroine still has a thing for pretty shoes, a win-win! 🙂

Although it took a while to really get “into” the story–Lizzy’s a bit standoffish, partly because of the pressures of being a woman in a man-dominated field who constantly has to prove herself and Kyle comes off as somewhat stiffly formal, due in part to cultural differences–once the story got rolling I had a hard time putting it down. I loved the constant costume changes while they were incognito out and about on the streets, though I’m still having a hard time picturing Kyle in a red wig 😉

It did seem like a few things were glossed over/left hanging toward the end–the involvement of Safeguard’s counterpart on the opposite side, for example, and their sniper Jewel, who apparently has a past with Safeguard–though perhaps as the series continues that will come up again and be resolved later.

This was my second book by Ms. Drake, but the first in this series–it worked just fine as a standalone, though seeing Lizzie’s boss Gabe in action and hearing about Mayin’s cooking had me adding book one ( Hidden Impact ) to my TBR before I’d even finished this one.

Synopsis:

David Cruz is good at two things: war and training dogs. The ex-soldier’s toughest case is Atlas, a Belgian Malinois whose handler died in combat. Nobody at Hope’s Crossing kennel can break through the animal’s grief. That is, until dog whisperer Evelyn Jones walks into the facility . . . and into Atlas’s heart. David hates to admit that the curvy blonde’s mesmerizing effect isn’t limited to canines. But when Lyn’s work with Atlas puts her in danger, David will do anything to protect her.

Lyn realizes that David’s own battle scars make him uniquely qualified for his job as a trainer. Tough as nails yet gentle when it counts, he’s gotten closer to Atlas than anyone else—and he’s willing to put his hard-wired suspicion aside to let her do the same. But someone desperate enough to kill doesn’t want Lyn working with Atlas. Now only teamwork, trust, and courage can save two troubled hearts and the dog who loves them both . . .

Excerpt:

Her heart rate had picked up, fluttering at the pulse point under his touch.

“Yeah?” The urge to slide has hands over more delicate areas grew and he couldn’t help running his thumb along the inside of her arm.

Awareness grew in her gaze and she bit her lip as she nodded.

He leaned toward her, focused on her plump lip caught under her teeth.

“What else do you like?”

She opened her mouth to answer but he didn’t plan to let her get a word out. Maybe later. He bent his head to capture her lips.

And seventy five pounds of fur jumped up on his side.

“The hell?”

Lyn gasped. “Atlas!”

Af.” Mindful of the dog’s injury, Cruz gave Atlas a gentle shove.

The dog dropped back to all fours, his tongue lolling. Looking from him to Lyn and back again, Atlas lay back down on his belly.

Jealous. Damn dog was jealous.

Be real. Every dog recognizes a fake. And good men can see through it too.

“I’d really like to help.” Honest. Simple. All the other reasons paled in comparison to this.

“Whatever is going on, you know more about it than I do.” She licked her lips, her mouth gone dry.

His gaze dipped, focusing on her mouth. “I might. I know something. I’m not sure it’s related. But this next question is important.”

Can I kiss you?

Doubtful that was the question he was going to ask. But the moment was drawing out and she very much wanted for him to ask it. “Okay.”

“Do you think I would hurt you?”

“No!” It popped out before she had time to think about it. Anger burned up from her chest and spread outward. She scowled. “Of course n—”

He kissed her.

Review:

Extreme Honor is the first book in the True Heroes series, focusing on the Hope’s Crossing Kennel and the three men who work there (all ex-military), the dogs they work with (military dogs and police dogs, as well as some “regular” dogs and their humans), and, of course, the women they encounter along the way. Book one is David Cruz, Atlas, and Evelyn Jones’s story.

Atlas worked with a close friend of David’s who was KIA, and the dog has yet to recover from his loss. He’s lethargic and uninterested in continuing his training. Just before his friend’s death, David received a strange message from him that he’d initially discounted as a “drunk text”; now he’s not so sure. He’s immediately suspicious of Evelyn, however, who shows up at the facility unannounced to work with the canine, sent by someone with connections. When Atlas–and Lyn–appear to be in some sort of danger, David’s protective instincts come to life. What is the common demoninator between Atlas, Lyn, and David’s friend? What do the men who appear to be after them want, and why?

I enjoyed this story, my first from this author. Though David and Lyn have great chemistry together, it’s the connection they both forge with Atlas that really makes the book shine. He’s a working dog, not a pet, though, so if you’re looking for a book with a lovable fur baby he’s not going to quite fit the bill. However, I found the loyalty he showed toward those he’d accepted as his handlers and his intelligence made him into a character that was on par with the book’s humans. The suspense part was nicely done, though the ending still left a few questions, and one character’s switch from villain to apparent hero was a bit abrupt. Still, I had a hard time putting the book down once I’d started.

David’s coworkers are nicely set up to be heroes in future books; I’m looking forward to learning their stories and reading more about the amazing animals they work with.

By Piper J. Drake
Release Date: 1/26/16

HONOR, LOYALTY, LOVE

Now only teamwork, trust, and courage can save two troubled hearts and the dog who loves them both . . .
