Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, Delancey, and congratulations on your new release, Adagio! What 5 things should readers know about you?
Let’s see, five things:
- I’m a mother – I guess that pops up first because that’s how I define myself most of the time!
- I was a dancer, which is why I was so excited to write about the world of ballet.
- I’m kind of a hedonist. I love the little things that have no purpose other than enjoyment – a glass of wine in the afternoon, a beautiful garden, a quiet walk…
- I am a voracious reader. I’m usually working on two or three books at a time when I read, but I can only write one at a time!
I’m always amazed that people can work on more than one book at a time—reading, though, no problem!
Tell us all about your main characters—who are they? What makes them tick?
Anna is a fighter. She’s small and muscular, and has fought for her place in the Union Ballet Company just as she fought all the way up. She puts family above all else – maybe because she doesn’t have much. She’s straightforward and no-nonsense, fiery and real.
Cain grew up with all the privileges, but he still had to fight – maybe in a more literal sense – to be a dancer. He’s tall, handsome and moves like a jungle cat, and is on a mission to disprove anyone who asserts that all male dancers are gay. He’s been called Union’s most eligible bachelor, but at heart he wants to find the one girl who will appreciate him for who he is, not what he looks like.

If your book were being cast as a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?
Mila Kunis would be a good fit for Anna, or maybe Michelle Rodriguez. For Cain? Tom Welling from Smallville.

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?
I’ve been writing since I can remember, but I’ve only recently begun writing seriously for publication. That was inspired by the fact that I have always said I would write a book someday. And as I approached my fortieth birthday, I realized that my life was potentially half done. And I still hadn’t done the one thing I felt I was called to do. And so I began.
Ah, the scary fortieth birthday! <shudders>
What do you like best about being a writer? What is the most challenging part of being a writer?
The part that’s best is just the feeling that all is right with the world when I’m pounding out a new story. I love the feeling of creation, the bliss that comes with losing myself to bringing something to life. It is the thing I was made to do, and my life feels like it’s snapped into its proper track. The most challenging thing right now is that I still have many commitments outside of writing. I have a “real” job, too, and two small boys to manage. So I don’t get nearly as much time or focus as I’d like.

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?
The next Girlfriends of Gotham for Swoon Romance is coming out in late September, and that series will conclude in early summer next year. I’m working on a historical NA for Carina UK that’s set during prohibition. It’s a romance, and it’ll be preceded by a novella that is already completed in early 2015.
There should be a follow on book in The Company series in early 2015 – Allegro. And I’ve got another wine country book plotted…just need time to write!

Markus Zusak – The Book Thief
E Lockhart – We Were Liars
(these are the latest and the first two that spring to mind… but authors have been inspiring me for years! In the “oldies but goodies” category, we’ve got Blake, Shakespeare, Steinbeck and Fitzgerald, for sure!)

What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?
I’m reading I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You by Courtney Maum. I’m withholding judgment so far, as I’ve just begun!
