When Donna is sent back in time to Classical Athens, she’s furious at Dr. Stephens for sending her against her wishes. Then a Greek soldier purchases her to be his wife.
She’s forced to learn a new language and culture and faces her fears of never returning to her own time. The society hates her, especially because they think she’s an Amazon, which forces her to confront her issues—being compared to her genius brother, borderline abusive friends, and a cheating boyfriend.
But her husband, Peleus, is kind and patient. He counters all the negative voices from her past, but those voices drive a wedge between them. She must let go of her fears, her inhibitions, and insecurities, and admit her feelings, or she could lose him and the life they’ve built.
Excerpt:
Voices come from the entryway. The man of the house says something about a wild Amazon which, by that point, I know he means is me. A second man responds saying something about… fear possibly?
They enter.
I look up to see just one man with the man of the house, which seem strange. The number of gawkers usually numbers around ten to fifteen. This man is younger than all the rest, probably only in his mid-twenties. I examine his muscular arms, and partially exposed chest under the toga. My gaze wanders down to his well-toned legs, then drifts up his body again. Wow, if this guy walked down the street back home I’d be drooling, but since he’s a creepy Ancient Greek guy, I’m not going there.
I take in his strong jawline and thick dark brown hair, until I notice him staring at me.
I flinch back at his steady gaze as he examines my face.
“Stand,” the man of the house orders.
I stand, but want to cower back under this new man’s unwavering gaze.
The man of the house asks the new man’s opinion, motioning at me.
The young man steps closer to me. “Hmm.”
He grasps my chin. I flinch back, expecting him to strike me. But he catches my chin again, his hand firm, but gentle. He lifts my chin and our eyes meet. But I can’t look at him. He’s far too intimidating for me to hold his gaze.
“Hmm.”
He lets go of my chin and grabs my arm. Again, I pull back.
The man of the house speaks, saying something about touching.
“I can see,” the new man says.
“Don’t touch me,” I say weakly.
This makes him smile. He pulls a satchel out of his pocket and hands it to the man. My eyes widen as the man of the house grins and pulls the satchel open. He asks the young man something, and he responds, “Fifty.”
The man of the house laughs and calls in his guards.
They grab me and lead me out, while the young man watches me closely, his eyes gleaming. I don’t like that look. I don’t like any of it. It seems I’d been bought, but for what? I have a feeling his intentions are for more than slavery.
