My credit card might self-combust this weekend. Or go into hiding–for my own good (and the good of my bank account) of course. Barnes & Noble is having a “Romance Favorites” sale with more than 200 young adult/new adult books at half off their regular digital price–which is pretty pricey across the board, so their sale prices are good, but not dirt cheap. You’ve been warned. The ones I’ve read, though, are totally worth the cost. I don’t know how long the sale will last (the website says Limited time–shop now! which is not at all specific. Or helpful); perhaps it will be long enough for Amazon to price match it, which they usually do. I only checked a few of the titles on both sites–some were the same price, some were not. Only one, Clockwork Princess, was cheaper at Amazon when I checked, $4.99 to B&N’s $5.49.
Some highlights:
Two of Simone Elkeles’s Perfect Chemistry series, which I read two years ago and absolutely loved: Perfect Chemisty for $4.99 and book two, Rules of Attraction even cheaper at $3.99.
Cassandra Clare’s Infernal Devices series: Clockwork Angel for $4.73, Clockwork Prince at $4.73, and Clockwork Princess for $5.49. They’re a prequel of sorts to the Mortal Instruments series–same universe, 150 years earlier. I haven’t read them yet, but just picked up book one in paperback for Mini Moe #2 two days ago, and several close friends (okay, I met them on Twitter. But clearly they had impeccable taste, as we were all attending the same Twitter party!) have said they’re must-reads.
The Beautiful Creatures series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl is on sale (book one is $4.49, the next three are $3.99 each). I’ve only read the first so far and liked it, though I hadn’t read it close enough to when Mini Moe #2 and I saw the movie to really say how closely they were related. (We’ll just say that not everything invoked an “oh, yeah,” feeling when I saw it, shall we?)
I’ve heard really good things about Rainbow Rowells’s Eleanor & Park , so for $4.99 I’ll probably pick it up.
I read Lauren Oliver’s Before I Fall three summers ago, and it’s definitely worth $4.99. A popular high school girl spends a week reliving the her last day over and over again–kind of Groundhog Day without the antics of Bill Murray, which is much better than it possibly sounds. Anyway, I really liked it.
Katie McGarry is my favorite new adult author so far, and I absolutely adore her Pushing the Limits series. They’re not cheap, though. Only Dare You To is on sale here for $6.49. It’s the second full-length novel in the series (there’s a novella in between it and Pushing the Limits), but you don’t have to have read book one for it to make sense. You should read it of course, because it’s awesome and I love Noah, but you don’t have to. (Or listen to it on audio. The he/she narrators do a fantastic job of it.) I am counting the days for the next full-length novel in the series, Crash into You, which is Isiah’s story. (It’s 80, by the way. In case you want to count too.)
When it first came out, I read Miranda Kenneally’s Catching Jordan, about a girl who plays quarterback on her high school team. It was really good–but isn’t in the sale. Kenneally’s other three in the series are, though: Things I Can’t Forget for $4.99, Stealing Parker for$4.49, and Racing Savannah is a pre-order at $4.99. I found this one particularly timely, because when we were at Barnes & Noble last week (spending over $90, thankyouverymuch), Mini Moe #2 and I looked up its publication date, since she loves this series. (December 3. She was not happy. But this sale has pacified her. A bit, anyway.)
Jennifer Castle’s The Beginning of After is on sale for $4.99. I read this one two summer ago. It was an amazingly well-done book about a girl who loses her entire family in a single day–not exactly a happy subject, I know, but really it was one of the best fictional depictions of grief I’ve ever read, especially in a YA book. My GoodReads review is here.
At least I wasn’t walking the dog when I read it.
Speaking of crying, Bette Green’s The Summer of My German Soldier and its sequel Morning is a Long Time Coming are both $3.99. I haven’t read the second one yet, because I didn’t know it existed when I finished TSOMGS. Plus, the first one made me cry. But I’ll probably pick this one up, in the hopes that if it’s in a romance sale I’ll be happy at the end.
I found Claire LaZebnik’s version of Pride and Prejudice (in a high school setting), Epic Fail, at the library last winter. Then I paid full price for it, because it was absolutely adorable. It’s now on sale for $4.49. Her take on Mansfield Park, The Trouble with Flirting, is also on sale for $4.49 too. I haven’t read it yet–mostly because I can’t stand Mansfield Park (sorry, Jane Austen, but I’ve read it three different times now, at different points of my life, and nope, it’s just not working for me)–but yeah, I’ll probably get that too. Because a modern version would have a more modern heroine, right? One I’d still respect in the morning?
Obviously, this is only a sampling of the 216 books on sale. There’s a ton of well-known authors included: Jennifer Armentrout, Meg Cabot, Stephenie Meyers, Jodi Picoult…the list goes on and on. Check it out.
Barnes and Noble also has weekend in-store only sales to buy a select Nook book, get one free (obviously hoping you’ll come in and spend more money. Which of course any sane book lover would, darn their marketing department). This weekend’s list of eligible titles is here.
Anything look good to you? Maybe afterwards our credit cards can go someplace quiet together, to lick their wounds and talk about us behind our backs.
