A Balancing Act

I’m a mother of three children, ranging in ages from 10 to 3 years. It’s a balancing act and something all authors who have kids need to work around. I started writing when my middle son was only twelve months old. At that time I didn’t have any aspirations of becoming published, in fact, I didn’t even know editors required a certain word count, document format or anything. I really started out blind.

And then having small kids in tow, who were then at home and not at school all my writing took place at night. I’m still a night owl today, and do my best work then, when it’s quiet and nothing can distract me like nappy changes, feeding time at the zoo, chocolate smeared over the television, the dog’s got poop on its bum, or boredom, just to name a few.

I used to see that other authors would rent out office space to write, or went away to a retreat to get some words down and I used to scoff at the thought. Why would you need to do that? I think they’re getting a little bit swollen in the head area. But having been under deadline, and no matter how good your plans are each morning, with kids something always comes up, and the idea of an outside office or retreat doesn’t seem so bad… I’m totally for them these days and a little envious of anyone who uses them.

But of course I wouldn’t give up my kids for anything, they come first, even if I’m a little distracted with characters in my head when they’re explaining Minecraft Hunger Games or Dora’s singing in the background while my hero’s getting hot and heavy in the bedroom. It makes for an interesting life.

My advice for any authors who struggle with the craft while living with little darlings of their own, is get used to it. Write when you can, don’t worry if best-laid plans don’t eventuate and remember to feed the kids. Not like me, I nearly forgot to give my DD lunch today. Ach, you can never be perfect all the time. *g*
