Her best bet is to stay away

Was Olivia hearing this right? The one man in Indian Lake she’d found truly intriguing since, well, forever—the hopelessly handsome heir to the region’s most successful farming operation, Rafe Barzonni—was involved in horse racing? That made him, and her sudden attraction, downright dangerous. He wasn’t just out of her league. He was a gambler. Like her father. With the shame of her father’s racetrack betting addiction still haunting her, Olivia can’t be part of that world. Rafe’s world. She can’t trust him, or his magnetism. But there’s something deep in his incredible blue eyes that keeps drawing her closer…

Excerpt:

“I told you that Rodan was a Thoroughbred. My dad and I were hoping to enter him in trial races for the Kentucky Derby. I didn’t want any kind of publicity or news about him coming out until I was ready. He still needs training and experience. He’s not as lean as he could be. Not as muscular as he will be after Curt and I get through with him. On the day he makes his debut, I want to set the judges and reporters on their ear. I want him to be the best he can possibly be.”

“But he’s magnificent already.”

“He can be better,” Rafe retorted sharply. “Look, I can’t expect a—a caterer—you, I mean, to understand what I’ve spent a lifetime learning.  Rodan isn’t just a horse. He’s a champion. He has incredible genes.”

“I believe that,” she interjected, taking affront at his dismissive attitude toward her.  She wasn’t about to let him be condescending.

“Good. Great. Then you’ll control your urge to try to make yourself seem special to your girlfriends by using my horse.”

That was it. Olivia put her hands on her hips and marched around the bakery case and up to Rafe. Tilting her head back she glared at him. “Look, you, bonehead. I did nothing of the kind. Coming here to insult me doesn’t get that post off the media. It doesn’t help your horse win a race. What it does tell me is that you chose me to be angry at today. Bingo! I’m the winner. I get it that your dad died and I am heartily sorry about his death. But that doesn’t give you the right to come into my restaurant and bawl me out for something that was un-intentional. It was stupid. I give you that. So, I’ll tell you what, Mister Barzonni, it won’t happen again. Ever.”

Olivia stepped back. She had a crink in her neck from shoving her face up into his. It was the first time she’d realized how really tall he was. “Now, please leave.”

“Fine. I will,” he stomped toward the door. Just as he reached the door he swiveled around. “You’re right. I am angry about my dad. And I did take it out on you. That wasn’t fair. I’m sorry for that. Goodbye, Olivia.”

“Goodbye, Rafe.”
