As part of Kindle’s Daily Deal today, 13 books that have either been made into movies (the much preferred method, IMHO) or that are based on movies (might still be a good read, but a little more risky in my experience) are on sale for $1.99. It looks like Barnes & Noble has finally caught on and is doing some price matching as well. Highlights of the sale:
Jurassic Park by Micheal Crichton–LOVED this book. Absolutely LOVED it. I originally read it before the movie came out, and don’t remember now if I knew at the time that a movie was even coming, but this was a great read. I was a little bummed when I did see the movie that they’d changed some things, but for the most part I could understand why they did what they did with it.
However, don’t even get me started with the second one. Book two was fabulous; movie two? Ugh.

Catch Me if You Can by Frank W. Abagnale–This one I saw the movie first, and then got the book on audio from the library to listen to it. I’m almost positive it was actually read by Frank himself, which was a very neat twist. It’s the true story of a man who was a con man to beat all con men–both book and movie were highly entertaining.

Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella–I really liked this series, for the first few books. A heroine named Rebecca who loves to shop and lives in denial? Hmmm…wonder why I feel so connected to her….
Later books got on my nerves, though, because Becky never seemed to learn from her mistakes and kept being forgiven over and over again for not doing so. But still, loved this book. I don’t really remember the movie much, though, which is sad.

Jaws by Peter Benchley–Okay, I read this one a loooooong time ago. It was actually the first book my mother gave me to read that actually had (oh, the horror!) SEX in it. I remember being totally shocked that she knew I was reading it–especially the scene in the car. I was way more…involved than anything I’d ever read at the time. Still, it’s a classic, and once I got over my shock a very entertaining read.
Amazingly, I’ve never actually seen the whole movie. Which is why this blog isn’t Becky on Movies, I guess.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan–This is on my TBR list, and I actually have the audio on my iPod already. It comes highly recommended by several former students who raved about it in person and in their reading journals. Nick tries to avoid an ex by asking Norah to pretend to be his girlfriend for a few minutes–and the two end up wandering NYC for a night together. Mix tapes are involved. I have no reason why I haven’t read this yet…but I will do so before seeing the movie.
Because I’m weird that way.

Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen–Another one on my TBR pile. I’ve had a few students read other books by this author that they really liked, and the movie trailer looked entertaining. It’s a he said, she said story that starts in second grade with the girl chasing the boy–until eighth grade when he decides she might not be all that bad and she starts wondering what the heck she’d been thinking for six years. Seriously. I need to read this, and soon.
