Our interview today is with three characters from Shanna Hatfield’s historical holiday series, Hardman Holidays. Set in the western town of Hardman, Oregon, this series of sweet romances highlights determined women and the men who fall for them.

Filly, Ginny, and Alex join us today to talk about life in Hardman in the 1890s.

 

Welcome to you three lovely ladies. Tell us a little about life in Hardman.

Filly: Although it’s a small town, there is never a dull moment. Luke, that’s my husband, is very involved in the community and we both love it here. We have several churches, a skating rink, a wonderful mercantile, and a newspaper, where Ginny works part-time.

Ginny: Luke, Filly’s husband is my brother, made me get the job when I first returned to Hardman last year, but I really do enjoy it. I like writing the articles and sometimes I draw sketches to go along with the story. My husband, Blake, thinks it good for me to have something to do that keeps me busy.

Filly: (Grins at Ginny) That’s because you follow him around coming up with crazy ideas if you aren’t otherwise occupied

Alex: (Giggles) Ginny is good at making plans.

 

Tell us about the special men in your lives.

Ginny: Blake makes handcrafted furniture, like tables and chairs that are in high demand both here in the states and in England. His parents, the Earl and Countess of Roxbury, live there.

Filly: She forgot to mention his horses. Blake raises the most beautiful horses.

Ginny: They frighten me half to death, especially his stallion, Romeo. But they are very pretty horses. Not everyone enjoys riding as much as you. (Ginny frowns at Filly.)

Filly: True. Luke and I both enjoy riding, when we have the time and opportunity. Luke owns and operates the Hardman Bank, with the assistance of Arlan Guthry. Luke also owns part of a lumber mill and mine, runs cattle on our place, is president of the school board, serves as a church deacon and he and Blake fill in as deputies when the sheriff needs extra help.

Alex: I didn’t realize Luke and Blake were deputized. As to the question, I’m just in town until Christmas when I’ll fulfill a temporary post as schoolteacher and continue on my way to California. My wagon broke down and needed extensive repairs before I could continue on my way. As for that special man…

Ginny: A very handsome one came to her rescue.

Alex: I didn’t need rescued, although I concede Arlan is very handsome. And kind. And wonderful…

 

What’s one thing people might not know about you?

Ginny: I’m a terrible cook and don’t have plans to change. I’d much rather paint or write or watch Blake.

Filly: (Rolls her eyes) And they somehow find their way to our table several times a week.

Ginny: A girl has to eat and you always make extra, when she can tear herself away from Maura, that’s my baby niece. She and Luke aren’t good about sharing time with the baby.

Filly: I can’t help it if I rather cuddle her than pick up after your brother.

Alex: (Grins at the other two) Even though I’m a magician, I still like to watch other people perform illusions. Just last night, Blake and Luke made an entire pie disappear right before our eyes.

(The girls all laugh.)

 

What’s the most exciting thing going on in your town this Christmas?

(Filly and Ginny both look at Alex)

Filly: Alex and her magic wagon.

Ginny: Definitely Alex. She lives up to her title of Alex the Amazing.

Alex: (Blushes slightly) I’d say the most exciting thing happening in town is the Christmas Carnival. The children can hardly wait for it to arrive.
