Not every fairy’s tale begins with “once upon a time.”

Mine didn’t begin until the day the Fairy Godmother’s Rulebook arrived in the mail. Up until then my life was a monochromatic drudge, punctuated by a few moments of black, white, and complete G-rated shades of gray. After the book arrived my life transformed into a highly color-saturated Technicolor fur-reak show like The Wizard of Oz.

I didn’t think I was special. I was, in fact, almost completely invisible, afflicted with a slow metabolism and a paralyzing fear of birds. Not that it matters now, but at the time I didn’t believe in poison apples, glass slippers, or happily-ever-after endings. Nor did I have any idea that your fairy godmother never shows up until you are completely desperate.

Sarah Vance-Tompkins received an MFA in Film Production from the University of Southern California, and went on to work in feature film development in Hollywood. Prior to film school, she wrote and produced radio and television commercials. She grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan, and now lives in Southern California with her husband and a glaring of unruly cats.
