New Release Review! MY DARLING BRIDE by Ilsa Madden-Mills

My Darling Bride available now graphic

In a sizzling romance that sparkles with wit and depth, two wounded souls meet by chance in the desert and agree to get married, and their lives will never be the same.

On a normal day, Emmaline Darling isn’t a car thief. She’s just a simple girl who runs a bookstore and adores cats. But when she’s stranded in the desert and needs to get away from her dangerous ex-boyfriend, she picks her only option: swiping the keys to a famous football player’s Lamborghini and speeding away.

Football star Graham Harlan is in chaos. First he took a hit on the field that left him with a near-death experience, and now he’s promised his brother he’ll get married to secure the family inheritance. Trouble is he isn’t even seeing anyone.

Then a mystery woman steals his car. With his usual stubbornness, he tracks her all the way to Manhattan and gives her an ultimatum: marry me or I’ll press charges.

Her choice is obvious, only neither of them expect the sparks that ignite between them.

As the end of their arrangement looms, will Graham take a chance on love or let his darling walk away forever?

Review:

My Darling Bride is a marriage of convenience story with an OTT LOL “how we met” story (I hesitate to call it a meet cute, only because I’m not sure prison should be mentioned *quite* so many times in a meet cute? It’s one I’m not going to forget soon, at least)

Honestly, I liked Emmy a whole lot–her love for her family, deciding to get a cat with issues instead of dating again, her dream of owning the bookstore she works for–so much to love here. I loved her siblings and niece and hope with everything that is in me that Jane and the quarterback (Jasper?) get their own book ASAP.

Graham, on the other hand, kind of loses some of his likability in the second half of the book, pretty much from their courthouse wedding on. He has some moments of likability (helping out at the bookstore, for example) but a whole lot more examples of WTF-ery where he was all about himself and just keeps leaving Emmy to deal with everything else alone. He pulls it together in the end and we get a delightful HEA, but yikes. There were times I was not really happy with him. At all.

Overall, though this isn’t my favorite book from the author, there were parts I really liked. Plenty of other people really enjoyed the story, so absolutely give it a chance if it sounds interesting.

Rating: 3 1/2 stars / B-
