American vs British Accents: Isabelle Richards Author of WHEN FATES COLLIDE (with an assist from Gavin and Lily–and a giveaway!)

Watching BBC? Totally my idea of research!

WFC BT Banner

While writing the When Fates Collide series, I wanted to make sure Gavin sounded British and not just the way an American woman thinks he should sound. I bought several British English/American English dictionaries, watched endless BBC America. Harassed my British friends until they disowned me. The most helpful research was actually thanks to my son. He’s into MineCraft and watches endless YouTube videos by a British Video Blogger.  It was very helpful pinning down British vernacular. I promise, the When Fates Collide series contains no mention of Creepers or the Netherworld!   However, Lily jokes in the book that Gavin could read her the phone book and it would be sexy. I can unequivocally say that even MineCraft sounds sexy in that accent!

In the book, Gavin and Lily engage in an endless battle for national pride. Here’s a tiny taste of what those battles would look like.

Lily:  Here’s one thing I don’t understand.   What’s the subject in school where you learn how to add and multiply and stuff.

Gavin:  I don’t understand your over use of the word “stuff”, but alright, I’ll play along. Arithmetic.

Lily (rolls her eyes): Not the fancy word for it. The regular word.

Gavin:  Maths?

Lily: Yes! When did math become plural? I took enough math, thank you very much. I don’t need more than one.

Gavin: Perhaps that’s why I’m better at it.  Explain to me your need to make everything French sounding.  Fillet, for example. Americans seem to forget there’s a T at the end. Fil-ay. Or herb. There’s an H! You can’t just drop the H!

Lily:  Why don’t you just say the real word that bothers you?

Gavin: What word.

Lily: You know what word. You can’t even bring yourself to say it, can you?

Gavin: I have no idea what you’re referring to…

Lily: Fine, I’ll say it. Panties!

Gavin: They’re knickers!  Knickers!  (He shudders) Panties. Blech. That’s such a stupid word!  Changing  the subject.  I was just cleaning the kitchen and we still have all those holiday pictures from your friends. What are we supposed to do with them?  Keep a stack of pictures of someone else’s children for all eternity?

Lily: It’s what people do for the holidays.

Gavin: No. It’s what Americans do for the holidays.  And much like the way you do everything else, it’s over the top, excessive.

Lily: We do not! American’s are just festive. You should try it sometime!

Gavin:  What are you wearing?

Lily: You’re looking at me, you know what I’m wearing.

Gavin:  Humor me.

Lily: (looks at her clothes).  Yoga pants and your Oxford sweatshirt. Why?

Gavin: And why did you need to put those clothes on?

Lily: (looks sheepish). Because I ate too much ice cream and my jeans wouldn’t fit. Again.

Gavin: Case in point.

Lily: (rubs her belly) You love me anyway.

Gavin: Damn right I do.

When Fates Collide-FINAL-high

When Fates Collide Synopsis:

Life can change in the blink of an eye. One moment, Lily is trapped in a loveless marriage. In a split second she is free, but at what cost?  Her mundane life is set into a freefall of tragedy and terror. Her husband may be out of her life, but he left a storm of collateral damage behind and the burden is on Lily to sort it out.

Fate connects Lily with Gavin, a charmingly handsome British gentleman that has been drawn into her tangled circumstance. Gavin is everything Lily’s husband wasn’t and gives her hope that love really does exist. Gavin wants nothing more than to sweep Lily up and carry her off into the sunset, far away from the devastation left behind by her husband. Gavin has been the first breath of fresh air in her life, but she isn’t looking to be saved. She needs to clean up her husband’s mess and find a way to save herself in the process.

Does she throw caution to the wind and open her heart? Or listen to her head that tells her and go it alone until she’s found herself again?
