New Release Review! THE BOOKWORM’S GUIDE TO FAKING IT by Emma Hart (The Bookworm’s Guide #2)

The Bookworm's Guide to Faking It
available now graphic

What I expected on Saturday morning: Books.

What I got on Saturday morning: my ex-best friend and first crush in front of me.

Let it be known that I, Holley Stuart, do not give a single rat’s behind about pro baseball’s star pitcher Sebastian Stone.

I definitely don’t care that he’s standing in my bookstore.

Nor do I care that he seems to have forgotten about the last time we saw each other–senior prom, when he both humiliated me and broke my heart, albeit unknowingly.

Now, he needs a date to his sister’s wedding.

Don’t ask me how I ended up being it, because I have no idea. But that’s the least of my problems.

His grandfather is adamant we’re dating, and Seb isn’t in a hurry to convince him otherwise, so I have no choice but to go along with it.

The problem? The only thing I’ve ever faked is… well, you know.

I’ve definitely never faked my feelings for someone.

And judging by the way I feel whenever Seb looks at me, it doesn’t look like I’m starting now…

Review:

Holley and Sebastian’s book is a(n accidental) fake relationship, enemies-to-lovers turned friends-to-lovers story. It is at times laugh out loud reading–both the hero and heroine have grandparents in the infamous retirement home, after all–and there are several gatherings of the whole gang (from the The Bookworm’s Guide books as well as The Girl Next Door ) which are just the hilarious type of friend gatherings that you’d expect. It is definitely written in Ms Hart’s signature rom-com style, and a lot of fun.

My only issue is that the love story itself doesn’t quite seem complete–Holley’s long-held resentment of Seb is tackled at about the halfway mark (as it should have been–any longer and it would have felt overblown) and the two spend the rest of the story tap dancing around making their relationship real–until they suddenly do, and their story is over. No black moment, no grand gesture–instead we have an epilogue, which gives us a look at Seb and Holley a bit further into their HEA and leaves us with a tease for Saylor’s book. It was fun and sweet, don’t get me wrong, but I couldn’t help but feel that Holley and Seb just didn’t really have to work all that hard to get to their happy ending.

Still…Saylor’s book is next, and the guy she’s going to be trying to resist is both her roommate *and* British, so guess who will be counting the days for that one… (spoiler alert: it’s me!) 😉
