Review:
Fiance by Fate is a really cute read. It features a fake engagement, a troupe which–when done well–can be a lot of fun.
Sabrina Cassidy has long felt as if her life was not in her control. Losing her parents at a young age, she bounced around the foster care system for years, yearning for a real family. As an adult, she still craves the type of stable family life she never had, and is sure that’s she’s found her big chance for one–with her fiance David. He’s a doctor. He’s handsome and has a family that has welcomed her in with open arms. All the signs needed to start her perfect new life are in place. Destiny is smiling down at her.
There’s just one tiny problem. David’s asked Sabrina for a short break. A hiatus, if you will, from their engagement.
Sabrina’s sure it’s just a blip; though she does head to a psychic to get confirmation from fate. The psychic’s no dummy–she (or is it he? Sabrina isn’t even sure) tells Sabrina exactly what she wants to hear–or at least tells her some vague reassurances that Sabrina’s more than happy to turn into the corroboration she’s looking for. Perfect–now all she has to do is sit back and wait for David to come back to her.
Except he isn’t. Maybe he needs a little push?
Enter Jack Brenner. He might be one of Boston’s most eligible bachelors. but he’s also Sabrina’s boss’s son and a heartless and self-centered playboy. When fate–darn it, Sabrina was sure that fickle entity was supposed to be on her side–puts the two of them in close proximity at work, Sabrina resigns herself to having to make the best of a bad situation.
Mr. Brenner’s been ill, and Jack has moved back to Boston hoping to lighten his load and take on more responsibility at the company. When his father tells him the promotion he wants is contingent on his showing more maturity in his personal life, Jack manages to convince Sabrina to fake date him for a while. It seems like the perfect plan–he gets a new job, she uses jealousy to get her fiance back. What could possibly go wrong?
(Yeah, I know. But luckily characters in romance novels never can see the glaring neon signs that are flashing the words BAD IDEA just above their heads. 😉 )
Their early antagonism in the office reminded me a lot of this scene from The Cutting Edge:
Oh, yeah. Total foreplay.
And, just like in that movie, you know where these two antagonists are going to end up…but of course it’s their journey in getting there that’s so much fun.
Watching their relationship go from antagonistic to grudging respect to friendship to something more is like a guilty pleasure. You can’t help but root for these two to get their heads screwed on straight and realize that, hello, they’re perfect for each other.
If you’re looking for a fluffy and flirty story to pass the time with, Fiance by Fate might be just what the orthopedic surgeon ordered. 😉
