Review:
This was a quick read–on audio, it was just over 2 hours of listening time, which makes this either a novella or a short story (probably the latter); in other words, a short and sweet read.
Ultimately I enjoyed the story, though it definitely would have benefited from a longer format. Both Parker and Blake’s characters could have used some more development–what’s the story behind Blake’s temper, for example? How did he manage to keep his orientation from his family, yet his Army unit knew all about it? Did no one in Parker’s town truly guess about him? Both men seemed to figure each other out almost instantly, after all, so how is it that they could keep it a secret from a good chunk of the world? Their relationship ended up being pretty rushed, and Blake especially moved pretty fast from “I live in Florida” to “I want to stay here in Georgia with you”.
Not to say I begrudge them their HEA; because I was definitely rooting for them. But I would have liked more overall.
(Plus, does Blake get to keep his car? I sincerely hope so, because he has an unnatural attachment to that thing–I shudder to think what will happen if it has to go back to the company…)
The narrator did a decent job with the book; I wasn’t crazy about his character voices, especially Parker’s, but when he was reading the narrative bits his voice was absolutely delicious.
All in all, it was a pleasant diversion and a sweet story about two men finding the possibility of love where they least expected it.
