Welcome, Brenda! What 5 things should readers know about you?
Thank you for hosting me on your blog!
- I used to be a panster, but now I’m a plotter.
- I’m addicted to Gold Fish crackers.
- I modeled teen clothes when I was a teen.
- I collect old books with unusual covers.
- I started the contest Pitch Wars for writers after watching Cupcake Wars.
I hear you on #1. I’d love to be a pantser, but the more I attempt to finish books the more I fear I really, really need to plot. Really.
Where did the inspiration for this series come from?
The inspiration for the Library Jumpers series came from a coffee table book on the most beautiful libraries in the world. As I scanned the photographs, I wanted to jump into the pages and visit each one, which sparked the idea for Library Jumpers. I imagined battles with knights and creatures fighting among the bookcases. I bought the book, hurried home, and started plotting the first book in the series.
Oooh, that has to be my favorite answer to this question ever! I know exactly what you mean about wanting to jump into all of those awesome libraries (not sure how I feel about fighting creatures there, though…)
How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?
I’ve been writing most of my life. Stories have always played in my head. But I started writing with the goal of getting published about nine years ago. The authors who inspired me are J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis, and J. R. R. Tolkien. They each are amazing world-builders.
Excellent inspirations!
What do you like best about being a writer? What is the most challenging part?
For me, creating stories is the best thing about writing. The most challenging part is meeting deadlines. I tend to procrastinate at times. I need to stop that. Ha!
I am with you on the procrastination front! It’s just so darn easy to do…
What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?
I’m currently working on the first book in a series, ANALISE RISING. It was pitched as The Da Vinci Code meets American Gods, about a teenage girl with the power to raise the dead who finds herself drawn into the middle of a battle between gods—and into the heart of a teenage boy who is as mischievous as he is handsome. It’s targeted to release in January, 2019. The final book in my Fated series, SEEKING FATE, will release this June.
Sounds fantastic! Can’t wait 🙂
What are you currently reading? What are your thoughts about it so far?
I’m reading UNCHARTED by Erin Cashman to blurb it. I’m so enjoying it!
Oooh, you get to blurb it? Awesome!
If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?
I’d cheat and use my good friend’s quote. Ha! Fun fact: There’s an interview with me and Pintip Dunn in the back of ASSASSIN OF TRUTHS. Here is what I’d tweet …
“Nonstop adventure, intricate world building, soul-deep love, and heartbreaking sacrifice. Do not miss it!” —Pintip Dunn, New York Times bestselling author of the Forget Tomorrow series
LOL, I’ll take it! Thanks, Brenda!
Brenda Drake grew up the youngest of three children, an Air Force brat, and the continual new kid at school. Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother’s animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. With kids of all ages populating Brenda’s world, it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical for both younger readers and the young at heart. And because she married her prince charming, there’s always a romance warming the pages. Her favorite books are The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, Kings Row by Henry Bellamann, and Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. When she’s not writing, she hosts workshops and contests for writers such as Pitch Wars and Pitch Madness on her blog, and holds Twitter pitch parties on the hashtag, #PitMad. In her free time, Brenda enjoys hanging out with her family, haunting libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops, or just reading someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).
