Reading for Inspiration … Authors I Admire

I enjoy reading the works of so many authors. It was hard to break this list down to a select few. I’ve listed my top influences (and yes, several books published under my pseudonym have ranked beside them at various points in the publishing game) down to the writers who’ve had the most significant impact on my work.
Stephen King
He’s the master of horror and political intrigue made acceptable in the form of literary works. There’s no one who scares the crap out of me like Stephen King. And I’m amazed by his ability to keep producing screen worthy material decade after decade.
Stephanie Meyer
Call her the queen of sparkly vampires if you like, but Stephanie’s writing put the first person narrative on the map for good this time. Her prose creates a simple, yet interesting combination that pulls you into the story without letting go. That is, until you realize that it’s 4am and you have to work the next day! J
Alice Walker
The Color Purple remains one my favorite novels for its ability to make literary metaphor cool as heck. No kidding. You’ll want to read Alice’s work over and over until your eyeballs bleed. She makes it easy to understand the heartache and pain of her characters through her beautiful way of crafting words.
Maya Angelou
She’s more of a poet than anything else which is admirable in itself as I am NOT a poet at all. And no, writing and poetry are on two very different levels. Just ask anyone who’s attempted to do both and then let’s resume this conversation later.
Elizabeth Kostova
She’s the author of the very big book called the Historian. Now, the Historian is a literary horror novel and doesn’t have all that much romance. But Ms. Kostova managed to push out something that hasn’t been done before (well not on a super popular level anyway). She continued the story of Bram Stoker’s Dracula from a literary perspective and made it a side story about a girl’s love for her father. It takes some pretty huge author balls to do something like that.
Karen Marie Moning
And last but by no means least, Miss Karen Marie Moning and her Fever Series. Both the author and the series hold a legendary place in my heart as she’s the one who most inspired me to move ahead with my fantasy novels. If you haven’t read any of her work then you’re missing out. So grab your kindle and get started with the Fever series today!
