A Conversation with Mallory McCartney, Author of BLACK DAWN (with a giveaway!)

Thanks so much for agreeing to be with us today, Mallory! What 5 things should readers know about you?

Thanks for having me! 🙂 So, five things readers should know are,

  • Before being an author, and wife, I will always be an ultimate fangirl 🙂
  • I have two dachshunds, Link and Lola, who basically take up my social media and I love them to bits!
  • I adore musicals, like, a lot. You can often find me driving around in London blaring Disney or Phantom of the Opera (whoops 🙂 )
  • My favorite authors are Sarah J Maas, Laini Taylor and JK Rowling
  • I drink way too much coffee and love, love, villains

Doesn’t everybody do #3? Just maybe not around London… 😉

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

Black Dawn’s inspiration came from several different things. The original manuscript I wrote for my cousin when I was about to start high school, we had talked about different fantasy worlds for years, and the story started with Emory’s character coming to life in my mind first. After I had finished that manuscript, I left it alone for seven years. I went to high school and then college, then I took a year to travel through Australia and New Zealand. After my husband and I got married we were walking our dachshunds one afternoon and talking about our favorite authors and writing in general, and it came back into conversation. I will never forget that feeling, when the idea blossomed again in me, and I started rewriting the book the next day. The characters that we see in Black Dawn, their inspiration I pull from some life experiences I have personally gone through. But in my mind, they have always had their own voices. I get inspiration from music, and mythology. The world of Kiero I pulled different inspiration from climates that I have travelled too, and spun them into my fantasy world.

Very cool!

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

Writing has been something I have loved to do since public school. I did take a break as I said above for a while, but started again three years ago and haven’t stopped. My teachers in public school and my English teachers in high school were a huge inspiration to me. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the support from my family, and my friends. Not once did anyone waver when I told them I wanted to be a writer, and I will always be grateful for that. Writing is a rollercoaster, and having a solid support system to me is key.

Yay for teachers!

What are you working on right now? What can readers look for from you in the next year?

Oh, thank you for asking me this!! I am working on several projects right now! In the next year, we can expect to see Renegade: A Black Dawn Novella be released this coming fall, which is the prequel to Black Dawn. Also, in February 2018, Queen to Ashes which is the second book in the series will be released.  There will be four books in the Black Dawn series, and I am also working on an upper YA separate series, the first book called Defiant, which pulls inspiration from Sleeping Beauty and Spawn.

Fantastic! So much to look forward to!

What are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts about it so far?

I am currently reading A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas, and right now I am terrified!!! I only have about a hundred pages left, and I adore Sarah’s worlds, and her characters, especially Rhysand. This book is exceptional, and an emotional rollercoaster, one that I will be sad to end!

Those are always the best books—when you want to get to the end and dread it, all at the same time!

If you had to “sell” your book in a single Tweet, what would you say?

If I had to sell Black Dawn in a single tweet it would say, “Love. Loss. Betrayal. A long-lost Queen battling a Mad King. Welcome to the world of Kiero, where nothing is as it seems.”

Awesome! Thanks so much, Mallory!

The end of an Empire, the rise of a Queen

Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and upon Emory’s arrival she will discover she is the long-lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.

With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows…
