About Covert Games:
She was supposed to be a means to an end…
Redemption Harbor Consulting’s greatest enemy, Alexei Kuznetsov, is in their sights. For RHC cofounder Leighton, toppling the treacherous criminal’s empire is one more small step toward making up for his own past. To destroy Kuznetsov, he’ll go through the Russian’s niece, a woman Leighton suspects may also be guilty of dirty deeds. A woman he doesn’t count on wanting…who boils his blood and makes Leighton want things he doesn’t deserve with someone he can’t have.
Now she’s everything to him…
Despite other prospects, family loyalty has Lucy Carreras running one of her uncle’s prosperous hotels. But the longer she observes its operations, the more she believes the elegant establishment is host to some shady exploits. When her suspicions are confirmed by Leighton—a dangerous man straight out of her fantasies—Lucy’s entire world explodes when she learns just how evil her uncle’s sins are. Now she can’t stand by and let it continue. She and Leighton will take Alexei down together…if they can survive the deadly storm hurtling toward them.

Review:
Covert Games was an entertaining read–I’m woefully behind on the series (this makes the third one I’ve read so far) and so wasn’t as up-to-date with the other series characters as I would have liked to be, but I managed. Pretty much everyone plays at least a small role here, though, so if you’re someone who needs to know who everyone is and their backstory going in, probably don’t start with this one.
I liked both Leighton and Lucy as characters, and together they have the potential to be a solid couple even though their start is more than a little insta-lust/love-ish and it doesn’t quite feel as if their underlying issues are completely dealt with by the time we get to their HEA. (As a bonus, there is a deleted prologue at the end that gives a bit more insight into why his teammates are all pretty worried about Leighton for the first half of the book, that helps us to better “get” his issues at least.) The suspense is what really carries this book, though, and keeps you turning the pages. There’s all kinds of danger, and double-dealing, and traps laid for our heroes along the way, and readers and characters alike aren’t always sure who to trust. Lucy does have a few almost-TSTL moments, but you have to give her props for…bravery, I guess?
It’s definitely reminded me of how much I enjoy Katie Reus‘s romantic suspense–I really must get to the rest of the series ASAP 🙂
Rating: 4 stars / B
