Genre: YA Thriller with Fantasy elements

What I know: a boy at my school will one day wipe out two-thirds of the population with a virus.

What I don’t know: who he is.

In a race against the clock, I not only have to figure out his identity, but I’ll have to outwit a voice from the future telling me to kill him. Because I’m starting to realize no one is telling the truth. But how can I play chess with someone who already knows the outcome of my every move? Someone so filled with malice she’s lost all hope in humanity? Well, I’ll just have to find a way―because now she’s drawn a target on the only boy I’ve ever loved…

"...increasingly tantalizing twists that gleam in succession like nested matryoshka dolls..." - Kirkus Reviews

Review:

Malice is a twisty-turny time traveling thriller with likable characters and an overarching sense of dread and (hopefully not?) inevitability. I feel like I spent more than half of the time I was reading it with my brow completely furrowed–wait, what just happened? Why? They want her to do WHAT? WHY?–and the other half shaking my head, either with wonder or with disappointment in the choices that are being made.

Some of them require a major suspension of belief.

But Ms Dunn pulls everything together in the end, giving us an explanation for (nearly) everything and finally, probably(!?) a happy ending. Though I wasn’t 100% on board with all of the decisions and choices Alice made (especially the ones that had her planning on committing various murders with only the voice in her head’s say so–really, there should have been more convincing going on there–I mean, murder has multiple consequences, and it’s murder)–I do like how she pulled things together in the end.

Even though this probably isn’t going to be my all-time favorite book of hers, it definitely kept me turning pages into the wee hours of the night and has me looking forward to what Ms Dunn will bring us next.

Rating: 3 1/2 stars / B-
