New Release Review! A WHISPER AND A CURSE by Darcy Burke (Raven & Wren #3)

A Whisper and a Curse by Darcy Burke cover

Hadrian Becket, the Earl of Ravenhurst, has always scorned the supernatural—until a head injury left him with the unnerving ability to see visions through touch. Though he loathes the curse, it’s proven invaluable in solving murder investigations alongside Miss Matilda Wren.

When Hadrian’s mother hires Tilda to investigate a medium who claims she can contact her late son, Tilda and Hadrian are drawn into a deadly game. Mediums across London are falling victim to the “Levitation Killer,” and the murderer’s chilling focus soon shifts to them both.

Forced to rely on his visions as never before, Hadrian must fully embrace the gift he despises—and risk everything to keep Tilda safe.

Review:

Absolutely loving this series! (Is this connected to the fact that we only get 6-episode seasons of Miss Scarlet? Maaaaaybe…it’s probably not not connected–I mean, six episodes???)

Tilda and Hadrian are back with a mystery that is perhaps their most personal yet when Hadrian’s mother hires Tilda to discover whether or not the medium she’s hoping will connect her to her deceased son (Hadrian’s younger brother) can really do what she promises. Hadrian is more than skeptical that the London Spiritualist Society is anything other than a scam, though Tilda is determined to keep an open mind as they begins their investigation.

Of course once our two favorite investigators are involved, mediums across London start dying in highly suspicious ways…

I’d read some in the past about the spiritualist movement and early mediums, so I found the focus of this book’s plot particularly interesting. I loved tagging along with our protagonists as they attended séances, talked to mediums, and investigated the Society. The murders were a bit OTT (especially with the staging of the crime scenes) but it absolutely fit with how the Society operated and the people that made up its membership.

I was hoping that we’d eventually get some kind of an explainer for Hadrian’s “abilities,” and this book didn’t disappoint–he finally finds someone else who has similar skills and can give him some guidance. There is of course still a lot of unknowns there, but they–and we–got a bit more information about how it works and there is hope that Hadrian will be able to hone his skills a bit more as he continues to use it in the future.

And of course we got a bit closer to what I’m really hoping for here–an actual friends-to-lovers scenario! The kiss they shared in the last book was slightly obsessed on here by both of our MCs, and I may or may not have been chanting, just kiss again, already! while I read. 😉

Can’t wait for the next installment–the teaser blurb sounds so good!
