Backlist Review! GAME CHANGER by Rachel Reid (Game Changers #1)

cover of game changer by rachel reid.

New York Admirals captain Scott Hunter takes his pregame rituals very seriously. In this case, it’s not just a lucky smoothie he’s craving—it’s the man who made it.

Pro hockey star Scott Hunter knows a good thing when he sees it. So, when a smoothie made by juice bar barista Kip Grady precedes Scott breaking his on-ice slump, he’s desperate to recreate the magic…and to get to know the sexy, funny guy behind the counter.

Kip knew there was more to Scott’s frequent visits than blended fruit, but he never let himself imagine being invited back to Scott’s penthouse. Or kissed with reckless abandon, never mind touched everywhere all at once. When it happens it’s red-hot, incredible and frequent, but also only on Scott’s terms and always behind his closed apartment doors.

Scott needs Kip in his life, but with playoff season approaching, the spotlight on him is suddenly brighter than ever. He can’t afford to do anything that might derail his career…like introducing the world to his boyfriend. Kip is ready to go all-in with Scott—but how much longer will he have to remain a secret?

Review:

OK, yes, I surrendered to the hype and started watching the series just before episode 3 started (honestly, I didn’t even know it was a thing before that–thank goodness for Sarah MacLean’s Threads account!). So of course then I had to start the books as soon as I had room in my schedule…and here we are 🙂

This was really cute! I read it after watching episode 3 (and 5) but finished it just before 6…and honestly, I’m really pretty fine with all of the changes that were made when bringing it to the screen. They made sense for the difference in media, and I liked how “Skip” was able to be condensed (mostly) into a single episode. I enjoyed their journey in the book, and I loved their journey in the show–the book gives them a more complete story arc, but the show brought the characters to life and gave them their own arc fully contained inside a show that’s actually about 2 other characters. It’s like magic!

Not gonna lie, though–I kinda wished the banana was a thing in the book 😉

I have to say, however–listening to the audiobook was rough. WTF was up with those accents? The 25- going on 26-year old had a super deep, almost Scottish accent? (He’s from Brooklyn, FFS.) And the older, big, buff hockey player’s voice is a few registers higher? It was bordering on painful. And the same narrator does the next 2 books, which of course I already own. I kinda want to cry. Thank goodness there’s a different narrator for the last 3…

Hear me out, Tantor Audio. Take advantage of the moment and re-record the series, in duet, using the series actors. Please. I won’t even mind buying the entire series again if you do.
