Why I was inspired to write Paranormal Keepers

Being a full-time writer is probably one of the biggest challenges I’ve had to face in my lifetime. There’s marketing, working with editors and cover designers, effectively portraying the best version of a story, keeping up with social media, deciding on what price to sell a book and when it should go on sale…the list is endless. Add being a farmer’s wife (who actively drives tractor to help out) and parent of two very sociable teenagers and I often feel the need to check to make sure my head isn’t rotating at a full 360 degrees,

I know, I know, I chose this life. In fact, it’s something I’ve dreamed of pursuing since I was eight years old. And it doesn’t matter if I “chose” a different lifestyle, my brain literally won’t shut up with ideas as with any other writer. The eerie adventures of Harper in Paranormal Keepers was one of those stories that literally followed me everywhere—from shadows and noises plaguing me throughout the day to full-blown scenes of the paranormal creatures played out in my dreams. It saturated my thoughts to the point that when I finally sat down to give it my full attention between other projects, I cranked out nearly 10,000 words in one day.

Part of the idea for Paranormal Keepers stemmed from my always present curiosity of aliens. Some people swear they do exist, having been visited by them on some level, and I’ve watched documentaries that gave pretty convincing evidence. But what actual, physical proof do we have to go by? And what if all the movies and books we’ve grown to love were based on true stories, only they were kept secret by our government or a group of people sworn to protect the public from knowing the truth?

Okay, so maybe it sounds like I either watched one too many episodes of The X-Files or sniffed a lot of glue as a kid. Regardless, I think the idea itself that another world exists most of us don’t know anything about is incredibly intriguing. Then again, maybe that’s just the ramblings of an incredibly active writer’s brain that refuses to shut up.

Paranormal Keepers
by Jen Naumann
Publication date: March 11th 2014
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult
Synopsis:

Everyone thinks Harper Young killed her boyfriend. No one will say it to her face, but the signs are everywhere.

It’s almost been a year since Gavin was torn from Harper’s arms and brutally murdered. The police wrote it off as a freak accident, deciding Harper’s strange testimony was given under duress. But she knows something unnatural was involved and refuses to stop looking until she finds his killer, even if it means her reputation as a senior is ruined. Even if it means there really are monsters living among us.

With the discovery of the mothmen, witches, vampires and all the creatures she always suspected were out there, Harper finds herself amidst a complex bundle of unseen heroes who call themselves “Keepers”, sworn to keep the secret of the paranormal creatures that walk this earth. As she tries to understand what’s so special about her that she’s able to break an old Keeper law, Harper has a baffling vision of kissing a mysterious guy before a blade is brought down on him. Before she can get a handle on her future, she becomes central to a battle between the questionable “heroes” and the evil she’s been training to fight, leaving her to wonder if there’s any way to change the fate that has been foretold before it’s too late.
