Meeting the Protagonists of Nice to Come Home To
Thanks for having me here today!
Characters, and the development thereof, are my favorite parts of writing books. They usually come to me pretty fully developed, scars and all, long before I know their stories. This is fun.
But then the characters do exactly what everyone else does—they change.
When I first met Cass and Luke before finding out what their story was, Luke was a cranky engineer who owned half an orchard he had no emotional investment in. Cass was a victim of life’s slings and arrows, crawling back to Lake Miniagua to heal. They weren’t going to like each other, and they were going to be too emotionally stunted to like other people, either.
Oh, good grief. What on earth was I thinking?
You’ll be glad to know that Luke is a friendly guitar-playing acrophobe and Cass is a survivor, not a victim, and even though she’s a successful writer of a mystery series, she wants to be…are you ready for this?…she wants to be a barista.
