It’s a case of mistaken identities and unmistakable attraction in New York Times bestselling author Lynsay Sands’ classic historical romance!

Lady Maggie Wentworth must support herself as an investigative reporter. Writing under another name, she’s been exposing the notorious scandals of the ton — this time it’s the “working girls” of London. While interviewing the women, a client enters, and Maggie is shocked to see her beau. She changes clothes with one of the girls and flees out the window, only to be whisked away by a stranger.

Lord James is honoring a deathbed promise: watch over his late friend’s sister. Following Maggie to a house of ill repute, he’s stunned to see her emerge dressed as the notorious Lady X! Hard times must have driven her to such a desperate act, and he is intent on reforming the wanton chit. No amount of protest will stop him from saving her reputation. Now if only he can hold his own desires in check—and keep himself from falling in love.

Excerpt:

“Yes, I am Lord Ramsey. Your brother died saving my life, and his last request to me was that I see after you.”

Maggie was silent for a moment. She had known Gerald died bravely—his commanding officer had written the details of his leaping in front of a musket ball to save a comrade. However, she had never known whom he had died to save; the name had been left out. Now she stared at the man who had kidnapped her, the man her brother had saved…

She couldn’t help her suddenly tight expression or the tone of her voice as she snapped, “I see. Well, forgive me for pointing out something you may not wish to hear, my lord, but I doubt very much if smothering, typing up, or kidnapping me is what Gerald had in mind.”

Lord Ramsey grimaced, but after a moment said sternly, “It was not what I expected to be doing when I agreed. However, I doubt your brother expected you to get up to the things you have done.”

Maggie stiffened at his tone, indignant. “And just what is that supposed to mean?”
"I want you to burn for me, too," he breathed against her lips, then licked her lower one and sucked it into his mouth.

Review:

A silly but sweet story–I believe it’s a re-release of one of Ms. Sands’ earlier books, which explains why so much of it needs to be taken with several grains of salt (three titled only sons going off to fight in a war? One of whom has trained as a doctor just for the heck of it? Just the start…)

There were a lot of humorous moments–Maggie’s pursuit of stories often has her finding herself in situations worthy of I Love Lucy–if that show were about a bazillion times more explicit than it was, that is 😉 I liked Maggie’s determination to keep her “family” of servants together, and found her career as an investigative reporter admirable, if not always 100% believable. (She really did make some questionable decisions for someone who had gone undercover so many times in so many dangerous situations with such success before the book takes place…)

James was a bit annoying in his heavy-handedness (Maggie had that right!) and good grief, a grown man should have been able to keep at thought like my sister’s coming into this room two minutes after me in his head for more than a half a second, even if Maggie looks delectable when he walks into a room. I mean, really. He does this more than once…though at least only once involved his sister, for which I am sure she’s infinitely grateful.

So–sweet and silly pretty much sums it up. Not my favorite of hers, but a cute if implausible read nonetheless.
