(Mississippi Smoke #11)

Bay

My life was predictable and safe. Everything I had I’d fought for alone. I was proud of what I’d survived and did all I could to give back. But that was all snatched from me in the blink of an eye. One mistake and I was taken.

Hale

No one undermines us and gets away with it. The family always finds out and lives are ended. My job had been simple. Track the rat and find out who he was working for. Somehow that had led to her. The pale, raven haired, beauty whose life on the outside appeared boring. But she had secrets and they made her a target. Our target.

Review:

Be warned–this one’s a two-parter. Second part will (hopefully! Fingers crossed) come out at the end of next month (October 2026).

Hale and Bay have a lust at first sight (his part, mostly–though she does notice him, she’s working and keeps things professional) to enemies (this is all him–he does make her hate him back pretty quickly, though) to lust once again to (very briefly) lovers to…well, I’m not sure I should say how it ends? But they’re not in the same place they were at about 93%, sadly. It all goes down fast at the end there, and not in the direction I was hoping it would.

It’s easy to like Bay–she’s just trying to make a safe life for herself in spite of the crap hand life’s dealt her–but Hale’s going to have his work cut out for him in the second part of their story. To this point he’s been quick to judge (a gross understatement, honestly), heavy handed, manipulative, and partakes in one of my very least favorite tropes–the dreaded I know what’s best for both of us and am going to make that happen, regardless of what you want and without even discussing it with you first. Or ever.

Slash, on the other hand, is the very best boy–and I’m not even a big fan of Dobermans. Here’s hoping he has an even bigger presence in Hale Broke.
