New Release Review! THE SINISTER DECEPTION by Lana Williams (Field & Greystone #6)

cover of the sinister deception by lana williams.

A fashionable new sanatorium is attracting London’s elite with the promise of curing many ills but whispers soon emerge of questionable practices. Do they offer miracle treatments…or something far more sinister?

Amelia Greystone is alarmed by the rumors as a friend currently resides within the sanatorium’s walls. She turns to Scotland Yard Inspector Henry Field, and together they begin to track down patients and scrutinize supposed cures.

Before they can press further, disaster strikes. A bomb detonates at Scotland Yard, and Henry is caught in the blast, leaving Amelia shaken. Seeing Henry injured stirs the grief she’s tried to put behind her after the deaths of her husband and daughter. She can’t bear the thought of losing another loved one. And she detests that science has been twisted into a weapon against the man who’s become so dear to her.

Henry is unaccustomed to being the victim of a crime, and he struggles knowing his growing affection for Amelia has placed her in danger yet again.

As ominous truths about both the sanatorium and the bombing emerge, Henry and Amelia must rely on each other to expose a sinister deception.

Review:

Another edge-of-your-seat mystery with Amelia Greystone and Inspector Henry Field!

Ms Williams always shines a light on such interesting aspects of Victorian life with this series–this time it’s “miracle cures” at a private sanitarium that specializes in starving its “guests” and giving them hour-long enemas hydropathy treatments. Yikes. As per usual, there is actual historical basis for this–revealed in her author’s note at the end–which once again makes me so very glad to be alive in the 21st century rather than the 19th.

HOUR-LONG ENEMAS. I can’t even.

Besides the mysterious sanitarium, Amelia and Henry are also navigating their new relationship status (a conversation about which may have made me squeal at one point) and dealing with a frightening series of bombings in London (this last plot point may continue? I’ve got my suspicions about the law enforcement group that’s supposedly investigating). Time is spent with Henry’s parents and under the watchful eye of Amelia’s overlord cat. And also as usual, the ending of this novel leaves us hanging for what will be the plot of the next as our MCs learn that a friend of Amelia’s family is suspected of murder. Fingers crossed we won’t be waiting too long for the next book!
