New Release Review! OH, HELL NO by Abbi Glines (Mississippi Smoke #3)

OH, HELL NO available no graphic

Taking her was a means to an end. The task was to weed out the man who had stolen millions from us. He may have succeeded, but he’d pay with his life. Hiding from us was a grave error he’d regret soon enough because once he found out that we had taken the one thing he cared for as repayment- he’d show up. When a man had a weakness, it was foolish to make a mistake like this. He would come for her, and when he did, he wouldn’t walk away unscathed, nor would the sister he adored.

This was my fault. I hadn’t seen his scheme. It was my mistake, so I had to fix it. However, it seemed the joke was on me. What I had thought would be an easy job proved more difficult than I’d imagined. I had underestimated the power of her big brown eyes, full lips, and sweet, sultry voice. Keeping my focus on torturing information from her- when what I really wanted to do was touch her, have her, own her- would not only be a painful obstacle but possibly my biggest failure.

Except she hated the sight of me.

But I couldn’t blame her.

I’d walked out of her nightmares as her own personal monster.

Review:

My first Abbi Glines book, but definitely not my last–read this one in a day!

Oh, Hell No is the third book in the Mississippi Smoke series, and although the extensive family trees at the beginning were a bit daunting, it actually worked pretty well as a standalone. Don’t get me wrong, I am absolutely adding books 1 and 2 to my TBR, but though I didn’t know any of the series characters going in I (fortunately!) wasn’t totally lost because of it.

Even though mafia heroes aren’t normally my jam and Oz and Winselt’s meet cute was anything but (or to be more specific, it was cute for about a page and a half and then it got hella problematic), somehow Ms Glines managed to make me root for these two to get together anyway. (And seriously, this dude was *made* of red flags at times and Winslet should have handed him his butt when she found out what he had done but she didn’t–and I was still mostly OK with it. Who am I???)

The only real…complaint feels strong, so issue? I had with the story was the “big reveal” near the end–it felt a bit out of left field and really stretched credulity. I wasn’t shocked by that character’s “first”–honestly, I was surprised that neither of them had been suspected of it originally. It 100% occurred to me that one or both of them might have done it. But then that they kept going for years…? Seemed a bit much. But they’re not even an MC here, so I’ll get over it 😉

In the end, it saved me from wondering if that character would get a book–and I’m fine that they won’t, because I wouldn’t have wanted to have to root for them anyway. But Oz and Winslet? I’m in their fan club for sure.
