New Release Review! WITCH PLEASE by Ann Aguirre (Fix-It Witches #1)

Witch Please cover

Danica Waterhouse is a fully modern witch—daughter, granddaughter, cousin, and co-owner of the Fix-It Witches, a magical tech repair shop. After a messy breakup that included way too much family “feedback,” Danica made a pact with her cousin: they’ll keep their hearts protected and have fun, without involving any of the overly opinionated Waterhouse matriarchs. Danica is more than a little exhausted navigating a long-standing family feud where Gram thinks the only good mundane is a dead one and Danica’s mother weaves floral crowns for anyone who crosses her path.

Three blocks down from the Fix-It Witches, Titus Winnaker, owner of Sugar Daddy’s bakery, has family trouble of his own. After a tragic loss, all he’s got left is his sister, the bakery, and a lifetime of terrible luck in love. Sure, business is sweet, but he can’t seem to shake the romantic curse that’s left him past thirty and still a virgin. He’s decided he’s doomed to be forever alone.

Until he meets Danica Waterhouse. The sparks are instant, their attraction irresistible. For him, she’s the one. To her, he’s a firebomb thrown in the middle of a family war. Can a modern witch find love with an old-fashioned mundane who refuses to settle for anything less than forever?

Review:

Such a cute story!

I loved the world that Ann Aguirre created here for her Fix-It Witches, even though I’m not 100% sure that all of its premises would really work IRL (the world as a whole doesn’t know there’s witches? OK. But no “mundane” witch spouses ever know about their significant others’ true nature? Ever??? Less likely, IMO) I still had a lot of fun reading it.

Danica’s book club/ coven was a great group, and OMG, her neighbor cat Goliath’s adoration was just too funny. Titus’s sisters are just lovely, and I really hope we’ll see more of them in the next book. I was fairly certain early on that grandma’s role in Danica and Clem’s lives was at least somewhat problematic (and do not get me started on what Danica’s mother did once upon a timethat was a whole lot of not okay and it’s better that we don’t find out until we’re way into the book and we’re pretty much at the HEA by that point so it’s a bit easier to tell yourself all’s well that ends well. At least it gives a legitimate reason for some of his earlier thoughts/attitudes, which flirt with the line between kinda endearing and kinda creepy…knowing there’s a magical reason makes it better) BUT on the whole the characters here are a whole lot of fun, Danica and Titus’s chemistry is fantastic, and he is essentially–literally–a cinnamon bun hero.

Truly. He’s a baker. Cinnamon rolls are his specialty, and Danica’s been referring to him as “CinnaMan” for ages, before they even met.

Don’t read this book while hungry. You have been warned.

Does anyone know where can I get my own live-in baker? No? I’ll keep looking, then. At least it will give me something to do while I count the days until Clem’s story ( Boss Witch )… 😉
