My first Rachel Harrison book, but definitely not my last–this was an absolutely crazy ride!
Willa Sullivan is really going through it right now. After breaking up with her fiancé–she had to do it, neither one of them was happy in the relationship, though she does admit that maybe she waited just a tad bit too long to finally pull the plug?–she’s really been struggling to move on with her life. Her BFF from college (married and a new-ish mother) prescribed her a diet of horror and true crime media, to help her remember that “it could always be worse,” and Willa has faithfully complied…
…though maybe a little too much? Because when Willa shows up to another college bestie’s wedding–held at a gorgeous upstate former summer camp venue–strange things start to happen, and we’re not just talking about her ex bringing his new girlfriend to the wedding weekend. We’re talking about a reception that ends in bloodshed as her friends all die at the hands of a knife-wielding, severed-eyeball-wearing maniac. Except…she wakes up the next morning back in her own bed. Or does she? All signs point to Willa actually reliving the day of the wedding again. And again. And again.
Think Groundhog Day or Happy Death Day (my personal favorite of the two), except that the thing(s) coming after Willa (and her friends, her neighborhood, the entire world…) change every time. And the method of killing changes every time. But what doesn’t change? Willa and everyone she cares are about die. Horribly. Over and over and over and over again.
Even though I started to get stressed AF the further I got into the book–the descriptions of the gore and deaths are just so intense–I also was wildly entertained by trying to predict what kind of horrors were going to show up next (finally! My years of intensive #31horrorfilmsin31days research pays off ;)) and had a really hard time even putting this one down. Willa might not always have made the smartest choices, but she was definitely an MC that I really wanted to to see come out in one piece on the other side.
In my experience, time loop books can either be a heck of a lot of fun or OMFG so frustrating, and this one was absolutely the former!
Though…can’t say I’m going to be in a hurry to go to a wedding again anytime soon. Some things from this unending wedding day felt a little too real… 😉
