Brighton Walsh took this one on the road–I posted about it here. The last leg of her road trip actually coincided with my family’s trip to Maine, so I was able to meet her (and author Hannah Gray) in person at Grump & Sunshine Bookshop in Portland! I also picked up the hardcover and paperback copies of He Falls First–which are gorgeous, but OMG much to big and unwieldy for me to actually read! (I can’t be the only person who smacks themself in the head constantly when trying to read in bed, right???) Thank goodness for audiobooks!
Review:
Such a fun collection—I LOVE me a series that involves a whole family—found or otherwise! Added bonus for this one—all the audio is done in duet style, which adds to the fun of listening 🙂
Defiant Heart
A fun, enemies-to-lovers, opposites attract romance set in my favorite vacation destination–the coast of Maine! (Bonus: I listened to it *while* in Maine!)
Brady and Luna seem like they’d never work on paper–he’s the uptight town sheriff, she’s living out of her van as she travels from cause to cause (her current one is protesting the shopping center that will displace local wildlife, so she’s chaining herself to a tree daily)–but the further you go into the story, the more clear it is that they’re made for each other.
My only complaint is that (slight(view spoiler)) But really, they’re perfect for each other, so it’s hard to argue with the results 🙂

Protective Heart
I’m never going to say no to a friends-to-lovers story–we all know it’s one of my favorite tropes! And a male best friend who is the other half of your two-person smutty book club with you? Yes, please! Throw in forced proximity and there’s only one bed, and I’m just as much of a goner as Beck is… 😉
Beck and Everly’s story was a lot of fun–even if it was super obvious (to everyone except Beck) just who was staying over a Everly’s house when she was at work that made him act like an overprotective jerk 😉 I loved their dynamic, and even though it took them waaaay to long to finally admit that they were always destined to be more than friends, it was such fun to read that their collective denseness is easy to forgive.

Fearless Heart
Enemies to lovers AND marriage of convenience? Be still my heart!
Quinn and Ford’s book was such a fun read–especially since it’s obvious to everyone except the two people involved that he’s had a crush on her since high school (but as he was a typical high school boy *and* her academic rival, she hated his guts–made perfect sense to me ;)) Add in the only one bed-ness of it all, and I’m even more of a goner than Ford is 🙂
Miscommunication and jumping to conclusions leads to the relationship black moment here–not my favorite plot devices–but they got over themselves fairly quickly and fixed things up nicely in the end.
Don’t forget to get the bonus epilogues from the author’s website for all the books in the series–done in duet audio by all of the same narrators as the books!

Reckless Heart
A one night stand with the guy who ends up being one of the big brothers of your college bestie? A guy who secretly writes (and reads) smutty romantasy books and knows what your Buy me books and tell me to STFUATTDLAGG shirt means? YES, PLEASE.
Aiden and Avery’s story was a freaking delight–grumpy/sunshine will forever be one of my favorite tropes, and they embodied it so well! He was so stressed over his secret writing career and how it conflicted with running the resort, though, that I swear I got second hand cringe from it…I practically fainted from relief when he finally came clean 😀
I was less than thrilled with the relationship black moment here–it happened so quickly! I actually went back to check that I hadn’t accidentally skipped a chapter or two in between. And (view spoiler)But I did want them together in the end, and that was accomplished nicely, so… <3

Possessive Heart (this one was a re-read; originally read in 2024)
Even though their lack of (verbal and written–physically they had no problem!) communication for most of the book made me a little crazy, I really liked Addison and Chase’s story. I mean…hockey player, snowed in/there’s only one bed, and it’s always been you? What’s not to love?
(Though there is the lack of communication, as I may have already mentioned. It’s a bit excessive…though they do EVENTUALLY make up for it, so that’s all good.)
Just a warning, though–if two people taking every opportunity to jump each other’s bones (with us getting every. Single. Intimate. Detail!), even (especially?) when one of them wants to strangle the other is going to bother you, be prepared to skip pages. A LOT of pages, LOL. These two…I mean, it’s a Maine winter, what else you gonna do, I guess? 😉
Not complaining–just consider it a content warning, if you will. <3

Rebel Heart (also a re-read from 2025)
Phew–Levi and Harper’s story! Where to start?
This is a second chance romance with lots of angst and so many secrets. It does have one of my least favorite reasons for the original breakup–the dreaded one of us has decided we know what’s best for the other one of us and we’re ending things but not going to be honest about why, we’re just going to make them hate us trope. To be fair, though, they were teenagers when he made that (ahem) ill-advised decision and he makes up for it…eventually. But man, there was a lot of would you just tell her already? internal screaming going on in my head while I listened.
In a good way, honest 😉
I did love the forced proximity angle of the story, and Levi’s landlady (who organized the there’s only one apartment angle and kept “accidentally” giving them pot cookies, many of which were in…interesting shapes) was a hoot! They offered a nice reprieve from some of the weightier scenes and made me LOL more than once. Also–the family text thread. So much LOL-ing!
It broke my heart more than a little that no one in Levi’s family realized the heavy burden he was carrying from his mother’s death–for so many years! It was such a relief when he came clean to everyone and took steps to finally start healing.
And of course the HEA—when we get to it—made everything worth it in the end.
Fun fact: this was actually the very first audiobook I ever listened to in the duet style—and I was not prepared! It honestly took me a hot minute to realize that Levi’s narrator was narrating all of the men’s voices and Harper’s was voicing all of the women—it blew my mind!
