Excerpt:

I am holding my breath again. Is that how I’m going to get over this little hurdle? Suffocate myself? Is that even possible? I’m pretty sure we have some breathing trigger in our brains, but my brain is a bit pissy with me so maybe it would conveniently forget about the button.

I push air out consciously, quietly, and he takes his seat.

‘Anyway…’ I prompt impatiently.

His smile is a clicker. Is he laughing at me? Arrogant arsehole! That’s be just like him. See? That’s the problem! I know him. I’m not one of his other women. I know that is he as bastardy as he is sexy.

‘How did you sleep?’

I blink at him, my eyes wide. ‘You’ve already asked me that.’

‘You didn’t answer.’

I except a sign that speaks of anger. ‘Like I always do. Seriously, Jack. My desk is covered in paper. I have to get to work.’

I’m your work,’ he says with a shrug.

Insolent bastard.

He leans forward, and while his face is casual there is an urgency in the flecks of gold that fill his eyes. ‘Did you see him last night?’

I want to remind him of the salient fact I pointed out the night before. It’s not his damned business. But I’m not sure I can say that with such conviction now that I’ve tasted his mouth; now that I’ve been stunned by his desire.

Can I skirt around his question?

You’re my work? Okay, the thing is I have the New York guys waiting on contracts, you have a meeting in a week that I have to prepare for and Athens wants your input-which means my input- on a lease agreement. And I need to – ‘

‘Quiet.’

God! Don’t hate me, but when he’s bossy I love it. And he’s almost always bossy.

I glare at him across his desk; it’s best if he doesn’t know that this is just about my favourite version of him.’

Review:

Honestly? I wasn’t too sure about this one for the first third or so. I liked Gemma and Jack–they have good chemistry, though he’s got major, major issues (definitely not over the death of his wife being a major part of that) and of course there’s the work thing, so yeah, they definitely should be resisting with everything they’ve got…I’m still not 100% clear about what exactly tripped them over the line from resisting is still a go to OMG, we’ve definitely given that up, I see!So, yeah; that first third? I got why they wanted to be sleeping together, but couldn’t quite get on board with why they were actually doing it when all signs pointed to really not a good idea, folks.

I’m not even sure where that changed, but somewhere along the line I started to get a glimmer of hmmm, maybe this really could work…maybe. Gemma was definitely falling, but Jack? Still a bit of a mystery, to Gemma and to the reader (though this is a dual POV story, we get far more of it from hers than from his).

Then we get to the black moment, and oh yeah, it’s black. Even the US women’s hockey team winning gold couldn’t quite get me out of the funk that their relationship crisis put me in–I had to quick finish the book before the medal ceremony, just to put myself in the proper frame of mind! No worries, though–Jack pulled out all the stops–and his head out of his butt–and gave us all one heck of an HEA that nearly made me forget about all of the earlier agony he put us through earlier.

Almost. 😉

Plus–kudos to Ms. Connelly for not vilifying Jack’s dead wife, my personal pet peeve in widow/widower stories! It’s always nice to see a romance author who believes that it could be possible to find love twice in a lifetime <3 🙂

I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for her next book in the Dare line!

About the author:

Clare Connelly grew up in a small country town in Australia. Surrounded by rainforests, and rickety old timber houses, magic was thick in the air, and stories and storytelling were a huge part of her childhood.

From early on in life, Clare realised her favourite books were romance stories, and read voraciously. Anything from Jane Austen to Georgette Heyer, to Mills & Boon and (more recently) 50 Shades, Clare is a romance devotee. She first turned her hand to penning a novel at fifteen (if memory serves, it was something about a glamorous fashion model who fell foul of a high-end designer. Sparks flew, clothes flew faster, and love was born.)

Clare has a small family and a bungalow near the sea. When she isn’t chasing after energetic little toddlers, or wiping fingerprints off furniture, she’s writing, thinking about writing, or wishing she were writing.
