Last updated on 08/11/2025

Cover of Lizzie Damilola Blackburn's The Re-Write.

In this lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers rom-com, two exes are faced with one deadline. Will they make it to the end?

Temi and Wale meet in London. They flirt, date, meet each other’s friends.

. . . Then Wale dumps Temi to go on Love Villa.

Instead of giving in to heartbreak, Temi throws herself into her writing. She’s within touching distance of a book deal that would solve all her problems. But publishers keep passing on her novel and bills still have to be paid. So, when the opportunity to ghost-write a celebrity autobiography arises, Temi finds herself accepting.

And, of course, the celebrity turns out to be Wale…

Has too much time passed, or just enough to spark a whole new kind of relationship?

Review:

I’m not going to lie, I spent a good third or so of this book completely stressed out by the ever-increasing deep hole the MC was digging herself into with, well, pretty much everyone around her, personally and professionally. In that aspect, this book was very reminiscent of Bridget Jones’s Diary and the Confessions of a Shopaholic series in that in all of 3 books, the heroines were mostly causing their own problems by not being honest with themselves or truthful with others until everything was crashing down around them and they absolutely had to.

Not my favorite kind of heroine, TBH. There’s a reason I gave up on both of those series.

That said, the author did a decent job of pulling Temi back from the brink by (finally!) starting to make more honest choices and taking responsibility for her actions. She had really good chemistry with Wale all along (clearly there was a reason they got together the first time!) though it was a little disconcerting to see how much she didn’t actually know about him the first time they were together. It does help the argument for why they’ll have a better chance this time around, at least–so there’s that.

Once Temi turned herself around, it was a lot easier to enjoy reading without feeling like I needed to up my blood pressure medicine. The ending was lovely, but truthfully my favorite romance in this book might actually be the one between the secondary characters, because OMG those 2 were just meant to be and good on him for not giving up on his crush.

Rating: 4 stars / B+
