Clarissa Ruthven’s just turned twenty-one is fresh out of school, and she’s got plans. Lots of plans. She has a charity school she’s dedicated to, a plan to use her share of the family publishing business to help both her charity and women in general, and many, many other grand ideas. Finding out that other than her share of the business, she gets nothing from her father’s inheritance until she marries just doesn’t work for her. Determined to get at least some of her plans into motion, she agrees to a mentorship at the publishing house, even though she can’t stand the manager her father hired.
Gabe Adamson only takes on mentoring Clary because he needs the extra money her brother offers for the job because his sister needs a dowry. He’s devoted his life to bringing himself and his sister up from the gutter they grew up in, and is determined that nothing will drag them back down into the muck…until circumstances almost do.
Gabe and Clary together are absolutely wonderful–their enemies-to-lovers story is just so much fun to read. She finds his proper stuffiness is annoying and is convinced he hates her; he’s fascinated by her but is sure he’ll never deserve her–the push and pull between them is amazing. I had so much fun watching them fall in love, and their grand gesture moment? So, so good. I closed the book with a happy, dreamy smile on my face.
Are we sure there’s no more Ruthven siblings hiding in the wings? No? I guess I’ll just have to wait for Ms. Carlyle to start a new series, then…
