Review:
Breaking the Rules is essentially a collection of bonus material for Kendall Ryan‘s Hot Jocks series–the bulk of it is really meant for fans of the series since it features established couples, though roughly 40% or so is a short story featuring a new couple.
Roughly half of the book is a short novella giving readers a snippet of the “after” part of the HEA of Becca and Owen, hero and heroine of All the Way , who are approaching a defining moment in their lives and have major choices to make. What will they do, and will their relationship thrive, or merely survive? Are they actually Playing for Keeps? This *could* stand alone as a marriage-in-trouble story, but it will definitely have more meaning for readers who already love the couple.
Next is a short story, “Game for Love,” with rookie Preston and his roommate-with-sometime-benefits Essex. We see Preston briefly in the first novella ignoring puck bunnies in a bar, and in his story we find out why. He thinks he can have something special with Essie, but she doesn’t seem to want to go there. Can he convince her to take a chance on love? This is a new couple, and fun for newbies and series fans alike.
The last bit of the book is three bonus shorts–snippets of material originally meant to be in the books which give readers an extra look at some of their favorite couples–Owen and Becca are here again, as well as Justin and Elise ( Playing for Keeps ) and Asher and Bailey ( Crossing the Line ). They’re really short and cute, though not truly meant for new readers.
Overall Playing for Keeps is a quick read that could scratch an itch for series fans. This isn’t the book to start the series with, but if you’ve read some or all of the other books and can’t get enough of your favorite couples? This is the reading snack you might be looking for.
