Release Day Review! CALLUM by Sawyer Bennett (Pittsburgh Titans #12)

Pittsburgh Titans: CALLUM
available now banner

Callum Derringer was hired by the Pittsburgh Titans to help rebuild the organization after a devastating plane crash left its future unknown. Now that he’s got the team back on track, it’s time to put some effort into his own life.

When I accepted the job of general manager with the Titans, it was just the opportunity I needed to prove myself to the sports world. Unfortunately, my career isn’t the only area in which I’ve previously made mistakes and the past is about to come back in a big way.

Juniper Ryan is…complicated. Smart, funny and insanely gorgeous, she was my first love and my first heartbreak. But my loss was my stepbrother’s gain and she’s been his wife for five years now. I’ve done a decent job of putting her out of my mind but when I’m brought home for a family emergency and see the bruises on Juniper, I’m gutted to learn that she was pushed into the arms of a monster.

Vowing to put our past aside, I learn dark truths about my brother and his marriage to my first love. And to make matters worse, I’m beginning to realize the feelings I once had for Juniper aren’t tucked quite as far away as I had hoped.

When things take a dangerous turn, I’m willing to put myself in the line of fire to keep my girl safe. I was a fool to walk away from Juniper the first time and I’m a man who knows better than to make the same mistake twice.

Review:

Let me start by saying, I really liked Callum and Juniper’s story, BUT–where the heck is the CW? I guess you can infer it from a close read of the blurb (which I think we’ve all established I don’t do, but moving on) that there is probably one big reason for Juniper’s bruises, but with how in your face it is for the first quarter at least of the book–pretty much from the very first page, if we consider Callum’s mom’s situation, which of course we should–I’m sure there are readers out there who would like to know from the start that domestic violence is going to play a pretty big role here. On the page.

So, CW: DV.

But really, I loved this second chance romance. Callum and Juniper were clearly meant for each other, but had let their lives and plans for themselves get in the way in their early 20s. I enjoyed watching Juniper meet the rest of the Titans family and becoming a “queen” and of course seeing Callum and Juniper rekindle their romance was great. Juni’s won’t-let-her-go-so-who-knows-when-he’ll-be-her-ex added suspense to the plot, turning it into an edge-of-your-seat thriller for a while there.

And then, finally, a much deserved HEA <3

As the GM, Callum spends a lot of his work time here (they’re in the off-season) trying to make trades and bring in new players (readers of the series, brace yourselves for some big news here) which I’m hoping means plenty of fodder for future series books 🙂

Callum, as always, works as a standalone just fine–but if you want to appreciate the friendships that Juni makes as Callum brings her into the Titans fold, you’re going to have to read the whole series.

I listened to the audio version, and enjoyed it quite a bit–the female narrator (Lessa Lamb) tended toward over-annunciation and didn’t do the best job with male voices, but still, I wasn’t sorry I was listening to it. Joe Clark, as always, did a great job.

Rating: 4 stars / A-
