Release Day Review! THE ONE-NIGHT SECRET by Brighton Walsh (Steele Brothers of Starlight Cove #5)

I survived jail. One night with a gorgeous stranger wasn’t supposed to be the hard part.

But Rowan Wilder is a force to be reckoned with. A five-foot-nothing storm cloud in combat boots who marches toward men twice her size with nothing but a baseball bat and a sharp mouth.

She’s the first woman to get under my skin…and the last one I should be touching.

I came to Starlight Cove looking for the father who abandoned my mom and me. Instead, I find four half-brothers who want me gone yesterday and the fiercely protective single mom who makes leaving feel impossible.

When a broken-down car strands me in Rowan’s attic and a storm lands me back in her bed, I’m suddenly sharing a roof with someone who looks like sin, tastes like temptation, and feels a hell of a lot like home.

Trouble is, her ex keeps circling like she still belongs to him. He’s wrong. And I’m one bad decision away from making sure he knows it.

Protecting Rowan is easy. Breaking through her defenses is not.

She’s spent years building walls around the life she’s fought hard to create, and falling for another ex-con isn’t part of her plan.

Walking away would be the smart move. But I didn’t survive everything I have just to be smart.

I survived it all to be hers.

Review:

A *fifth* Steele brother? Yes, please!

I really enjoyed Maverick and Rowan’s story–narrated duet style by two amazing narrators! (Seriously, each of Rowan’s 3 teenaged sons had their own voice here, and likewise for all the participants in the Steele women chat thread–no notes!)

Maverick rode into town with a giant chip on his shoulder, planning to confront his deadbeat dad. Instead he ended up finding the family he didn’t even know he needed–first, with Rowan and her boys, and later, the rest of the Steeles (to the surprise of no one who knows these guys, it took them a while–and a talking to from their mom Holly–to make that happen). All of the group dynamics here were great–Rowan and her boys; the brothers, their women, and their families–whether they were participating in their various group chats or getting together IRL, they were all a delight to read.

Though they kicked their relationship off with a one night stand *and* Maverick moved in to Rowan’s attic relatively soon after that, this book could almost be considered to be a slow burn romance. Rowan wasn’t at all ready for a relationship–plus, three teenage boys live in the house with them–and Maverick had his own agenda in Starlight Cove that didn’t include starting a relationship. Though his wardrobe definitely gave a great big spoiler for what would be in Rowan’s near future–IYKYK 😉 And once they finally gave in to the relationship? The brakes were off <3

The fifteen years in the future epilogue makes me think that the next gen of Steeles are going to be taking the spotlight, and I am here for it!
