Review:
My first from this author! I feel like it’s been a long time coming 🙂
Mace and Slade’s romance has a touch of instalust (I forget exactly how soon the two of them were getting busy in the back room of Mace’s bar, but they didn’t waste a lot of time beforehand) and a good deal of angst–they’re both closeted for a good deal of the book–as well as a healthy amount of steam. They were good together, but kept getting in the way of their own HEA with their individual hangups.
Overall I liked the story–I will undoubtedly read more from the author in the future–but it didn’t always flow well for me. The timeline was choppy at times–especially in the second half, when we had a lot of time jumps–and some things that were a pretty big deal (like the aftermath of Mace’s accident, for one big example) were resolved without a lot of page time devoted to them. I also (and will fully admit this was probably just a me problem) kept losing track of whose POV we were in (and which secondary character was which, at times), which would momentarily take me out of the story for a minute. I honestly don’t know what was going on there–like I said, undoubtedly a me problem, but it’s one I don’t often have so I’m not sure why I had it here specifically.
I did really love (view spoiler)
This was the second book in the series but it worked fine as a standalone…though of course I’ve already got book 1 on my TBR.
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

It’s always a surprise to see what’s coming next!
Usually, I try for funny. Humor is a major part of my life – I love to laugh, and it seems to be the thing I do in most situations – regardless of the situation, but jokes are a tricky deal. I don’t want to offend anyone and jokes tend to offend. So instead I’m going to tell you about Kindle.
I tragically lost my sixteen year old daughter to a drunk driver. She had just been home, it was early in the night and I heard the accident happen. I’ll never forget that moment. The sirens were immediate and something inside me just knew. I left my house, drove straight to the accident on nothing more than instinct. I got to be there when my little girl died – weirdly, I consider that a true gift from above. She didn’t have to be alone.
That time in my life was terrible. It’s everything you think it would be times about a billion. I love that kid. I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.
Her name was Kindle. Honest to goodness – it was her name and she died a few weeks before Amazon released their brand new Kindle ereader. She had no idea it was coming out and she would have finally gotten her name on something! Try finding a ruler with the name Kindle on it.. It never happened.
Through the course of that crippling event I was lucky enough to begin to write with a dear friend in the fan fiction world of Facebook. She got me through those dark days with her unwavering support and friendship. There wasn’t a time she wasn’t there for me. We’ve built a world where Kindle lives and stands for peace, love and harmony. It’s its own kind of support group. I know without question I wouldn’t be here today without her.
