Title: The Rookie
Series: Looking to Score
By Kendall Ryan
Release Day: July 20, 2021

He has everything a man could want. A lucrative hockey contract. Adoring fans. A family who loves him.

But he’s about to throw it all away. Logan Tate’s name is dominating the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Instead of goals and assists, the talented young defenseman has been racking up fights and suspensions.

I work with athletes who are struggling, but Logan’s different. He’s not just going to blow his season, but his entire career. And now he can’t return to the ice until he deals with his issues, but the stubborn man won’t let anyone get close enough to help.

Which is why I packed up and followed him to his family’s property in the remote mountains of Colorado. He can’t avoid me here.

The only problem?

I can’t avoid him either. He’s chopping wood and building fires, rescuing my car from snowy ditches, and inviting me to Sunday dinners with his loud extended family. He’s a whole lot of man, but beneath all those hard edges is an unexpected tenderness.

Tempted or not, I have to stay out of his bed and get him back to the ice . . . no matter how difficult that might be.

The Rookie is a close proximity, found family romance with a hero that may be a professional hockey player but who is rocking some serious lumberjack vibes here… 😉

Logan and Summer’s story is very sweet–he’s the hockey player who needs to get his head screwed on straight before he blows his chance at the pros, and she’s the sports therapist who is determined to help him save his career and boost her own. Suspended from the team, he leaves town without making arrangements for his mandated therapy–so of course Summer follows him to Colorado to make sure he does what he’s supposed to. His family lives in the middle of nowhere (pretty much literally) and Summer doesn’t have a vehicle there, so of course she ends up staying on the family property…and the snow is coming…you see where this is going, yes? Much manly flexing of muscles while chopping wood and building fires and oh, no, are they going to get snowed in? will ensue.

And I haven’t even mentioned his mother’s pot-laced tea… 😉

Summer and Logan are adorable together–her sunny sweetness is a nice antidote to the grumpy gruffness he starts out with. He can’t stay grumpy for long around her, though (really his oldest brother’s the grumpy one–and Ms Ryan definitely teases us with a future story for him too) and naturally before long they’re stealing kisses and making eyes at each other that even Grandpa Al can see. There is a definite element of insta-love here and the majority of the relationship conflict is man (or woman, perhaps?) made, but the entertaining characters (perhaps his other two brothers could get stories as well?) and sweet storyline made this a lovely way to pass the time.

The Rookie is the third book in the series, but even more than the first two it would work really well as a standalone. The majority of the story takes place back in Logan’s hometown during his suspension and his Titan teammates play a peripheral role at best, so not knowing any of the details of their stories (those that have them so far, which is really just Alex) isn’t much of a hindrance here.
